I once heard that George Lukess spent 25 years trying to build a media production studio on his property, which would create some 600 new jobs, but there was a problem. His affluent neighbors didn't want all that noise and traffic in their peaceful, upscale community. Then in 2012, after years of battles, Lukess announced he was giving up and selling the property. And guess who he sold it to? Low income housing! The neighbors were outraged, but there wasn't a damn thing they could do about it.

+John Benton 35 sounds a lot better than 40 + mandatory overtime.
@johnbenton44889 жыл бұрын
The EU has a statutory working-week limit of 35 hours over 5 days. Individuals can 'volunteer' to exceed this limit, but they are paid overtime (1.3 x normal pay) for the extra hours, or double-time for Sunday working if this is not part of the normal working week. There are some professions where this is not possible (truck drivers, doctors, etc) but agreements on standard hours=overtime must be in writing and signed by both parties. UK workers work longer hours than (eg) Germans, but productivity can suffer from working too long. Uk workers retire (ATM) at 65, but in certain circumstance can work beyond the normal retirement age but this is not compulsory. Lorry (truck) drivers like I was until retirement usually work 12 hours per day, 5 days per week, but are paid for 50 hours, the extra hours being paid at the higher rate -up to a maximum of 60 hours per working week. The rules and regulations limiting Heavy Goods Vehicle driving are very complex, and open to interpretation. I'm glad I'm no longer part of it. Retirement means a significant reduction in 'salary', but retirement pay is considered enough to live on. I hope I've covered as much as possible, and I hope I've made a complex system relatively clear.

By the way, your understanding of socialism is very lacking considering you would use a very Friedman like phrase like “distributed poverty” to describe it. Socialism is simply the workers ownership of the economy either through a variety of strategy and tactics like public ownership of assets with democratic internal management, worker ownership through cooperatives in a market economy with a democratically accountable system of management, and a socially/ common based system of ownership through the mediation of radical trade unions that actively resist the state. You version of socialism is a distorted right wing view designed to scare monger working class folks into supporting policies that are detrimental to the well being and autonomy of the working class in the long term.

64kimmyjo Sure, but what about if you dont work at all and have a giant trust fund that makes ridiculous Earning$?
@RunstarHomer6 жыл бұрын
64kimmyjo of course they should. But lets be real here. The majority of the richest people in the country did not get there through their own hard work, they did so through the capital of their parents and the exploitation of others.
@sinistar996 жыл бұрын
I dont think the top 0.1% got half the wealth in the world because they worked 10000 times harder and contributed 10000 times more than anybody. Jeff Bezos didnt cure cancer he started a business with a 300,000 check from his parents at the right time. A lot of harder working people with better ideas didnt have that handout. Somewhere between forcing everyone to have equal income (which nobody wants) and 0.01% of people owning half of everything there must be some sweet spot where yes you can work hard get lucky and get filthy rich, but also nobody has to die cause they cant afford basic health care food and shelter. That sweet spot is called Norway.
@Amateur_Pianist_4726 жыл бұрын
Runstar Homer so their parents worked hard to provide for their children... maybe your kids will do better if you do the same. If someone is incompetent, the wealth will disappear. If they grow their wealth, they are competent. You’re paid based on customer choice. I don’t mind paying taxes however I do mind if others slack off and enjoy the ride while I work 60+ hour weeks.

Dental costs are so expensive and it mostly affects sub median wage people, worse and worse down the lower the income gets. You have to get your teeth yanked no money for the option of crowns,regular check-ups or caps or implants and that is pretty psychologically humiliating as well as difficult to eat and bad for all round health. Maybe if we can start having free or much reduced cost for education dentists will not have to go so far in debt and be able to lower costs.

Why? It's killing an animal either way. People love to think it6different but it's not.
@wunnell4 жыл бұрын
@@neolithic3 , there is a difference, if you look at it from a natural perspective rather than an emotional one. If you hunt a prey animal that is plentiful in numbers then you're not actually affecting the balance of nature. If you hunt any animal, predator or prey, that is already declining in numbers and possibly endangered then you are having a genuine impact on the balance of nature. In the case of predators, if they were wiped out then many prey animals would breed beyond the limits that their environment could sustain and many would starve anyway, which is a far worse fate than being killed by a hunter. I'm not fun of hunting for sport but I also think that we should avoid being too emotional either way on the subject.

I just went to visit family in S CA, (where I grew up, and sold my car to move away from...once Donald Brinn (sp?) developed Laguna Canyon, a place I loved and fought against the development of) only to see an increase in freeways, toll roads, housing with shocking green lawns and groceries bagged automatically in plastic.
