I switched from Proper Job to Harper's a year ago. Massively cheaper, for essentially the same beer; without sediment.

Unfortunately up in Scotland Aldi don't sell their own brand of Proper Job, we don't get any of the Harpers alcohol, really want to try it as well and i love the Union Flag bottle top.

Came here because I just bought some and it didn't taste like Proper Job but I really like it. Dunno if they've changed the formulation since you posted the comparison, but mine didn't seem as malty as you said. However, the hoppy flavours were as you described - more orange-peely/dark berries, yet still very quaffable and I'd say more New Worldy than British Besty. I'd definitely buy again, especially at this price point. It's gone up 10p since, mind. Maybe they changed the light/dark malt balance after seeing your review! By the way, apparently the Aldi Harper's beers are brewed by Marston's.

the cost difference is one is an in house beer-whether contract brewed or not-and the other is sold to aldi to sell. i kinda wish aldi here in the states had a more robust beer offering. it’s a little lackluster, truth be told.

I prefer St Austell Tribute but both really nice beers especially on tap. As for the Aldi version it's reasonable for the price had it on occasions but I would pay the extra 30p.

I’ve had both and I love proper job and I absolutely think proper job is underpriced for the quality of the beer but obviously I’m happy about that 👍🍻 ( a quality beer at a great great price. ) the Aldi is a good beer to be fair no problem with the brewing great vid cheers 👍🍻

Interesting review! It actually says "bottle conditioned" on the St Austell label (on the front label, under "powerfully hopped IPA" and above the ABV), so I'm surprised your previous bottle of Proper Job didn't have any sediment. It's easy to find in France (where I live), which is great.

I can confirm that the amount of sediment does vary. I poured a bottle recently without much care and didn't get any sediment in the glass. In the past I have seen some bottles with a fair amount of sediment

Aldi have another 2 new beers - Prarmo Czech Lager - their take on Staropramen, and a Indian lager (forget the name) both in 660ml bottles at £1.49. Tried the Prarmo - nice one.

Proper Job is about my favourite beer and it is pretty keenly priced. Aldi’s “clone” is not quite as good but it is extremely cheap for such a nice beer.

Interesting one this. Aldi are selling it as a Proper Job clone, but it's brewed by Marston's and what it actually tastes like is a cheaper version of Marston's Wychwood Hobgoblin IPA. Decent though.

My Aldi has a Rheinbacher festbier in the specials aisle at the moment, 1 litre glass bottle at 6.2% ABV I think and for £2.99 and it’s proper nice 😉 Worth a try! Im gonna grab a few of those Harpers to try, when I top up on the Abbot ale in there😊

Reading the other comments and there's me here in Australia with none of these sweet offers and mostly 2 big conglomerates making shite overpriced beer. But then I remember I'm home brewing and it's all good. Here is to all the brewers that make a great beer and don't rip off their customers !

Its a bottle conditioned beer, it states on the label pour carefully which you did not. Had you done so the sediment would have stayed in the bottle!

you can get both but the difference is Aldi won't go out of business if you don't buy their (usually subpar) beer

These are different beers. I wouldn’t say Harpers IPA is a cheaper version of Proper Job. My choice is Aldi as proper job is to hoppy. Harpers is sweater and bitterness is on a good lvl. Probably could be a LITTLE hoppier but still it’s better than proper job to me.

Nothing new world about Proper Job. Traditional English tobacco IPA with the tobacco turned right up. Just when I thought Proper Job couldn't be worse, it's even less attractive with bits of brewers toenail floating around in it. These have to be done blind to be of real value.

as a home brewer, sediment tends to change the flavor or the beer somewhat, though it does depend. For example I wouldn't want to waste the yeast in a German wheat beer, it's part of the flavor.

Harper's Brewery is not a real brewery it's just a brand name for ALDI to sell beers brewed by Marston's.

The Harpers Ruby Ale (Hobgoblin Ruby rip-off) is a lovely drink, at £1.09 a bottle. Every bit as good as the Hobgoblin it is copying

Aldi is (in)famous for it's clones. Their 'Anti Establishment IPA' is a Punk IPA ripoff. They even do one called Memphis Blvd which is a clone of Elvis Juice. And it's not just beers - their 'Meadow Flower' butter tubs look just like Clover.

It's weird how everything English needs to have a union flag. Prefer it to have an England flag on it so it shows where it comes from. A lot of great English breweries. Be proud of it for bloody sakes.
