@ronniechambers25556 ай бұрын
A couple on there I've never been to, though I knew of them, the Turks Head and Wellington and must remember to visit them next time I'm in Manchester. Never been to the Shakespeare either, but there can't be a pub that promises so much from the outside that delivers so little on the inside, so won't be going there. This video and some of the things said, got me thinking of some of the pubs that existed when I first visited in 1997, just before it started to change, and that have now closed. In 1997 that area around the Angel was built up, with terraced streets, and remember going to a pub called the Pot of Beer, alas no more. Simon I'm sure would've loved the Jolly Anglers, RIP. The Northern Quarter back then was like the Bronx, mean and moody, the Smithfield Tavern was always popular, a place where contractors would stay, I stayed there once, excellent accommodation for the price. Lots of places like Bar Fringe nowadays, but back then it was a trailblazer, foreign beers a rarity in those days.
@SlurpyDave2546 ай бұрын
@ronniechambers2555 spot on about the Shakespeare, it's awful inside..northern quarter/Ancoats was on its knees in the 80's. So many pubs gone in that area. Pot of Beer was called the Harp n Shamrock those day due to the Irish connections around there. Building still stands. Defo go to the Turks Head Ronnie ( hare n hounds next door also super)..some good shouts there mate!🍺👍

Really enjoyed that, 3 hours of Manchester, my favourite city, though don't like the way its being Londonised. I did my first pub crawl there in 1997, just before it started to change ( for the worse IMO ). This video has reminded me though, that it still has a lot to offer in the traditional sense, and restored what was on the wane, that is my love for Manchester, its industrial history, culture and its pubs, a place you could easily spend a week, visiting 7 or 8 good pubs/bars and taprooms a day.

Just finally finished this (work truly is the curse of the drinking classes) and just brilliant. Used to live in Manchester area and know most of the old places well, but great reminder of their histories. More like this please Simon - much as I love your beer reviews I think there's a market for tours of towns/cities and chats with breweries - maybe smaller towns to a) keep the length of the video down and b) stop you getting wobbly gob 🙂
