I can see a couple of problems with your setup that would most likely be the cause of the issues you are having. Firstly the exhaust muffler is mounted upside down. There is a small hole in the seam of the muffler that should be pointing down to allow condensation to drain during operation. Secondly the more serious is that the exhaust should always be lower than the combination chamber with minimal bends. I would suggest that you mount the heater closer to the ground for better heat efficiency and have the exhaust venting below the heater and facing downward to allow condensation and some carbon to escape. Also when burning waste oil you need to avoid lower heat settings. Only use heat settings above three and you shouldn’t have too many issues. I only ever use waste oil and have never had issues like this. But a very entertaining set of videos nonetheless!
@Flyinghook
@Flyinghook Жыл бұрын
The orientation of the exhaust and muffler have nothing to do with coking, what's probably his biggest issue is his controller isn't adjustable. He has ordered a new one, but try ordering anything this time of year and expect it to arrive in under 2 weeks and let me know how that goes for you.

Thanks for the input. Others have made similar suggestions. Interested to know more details of your waste oil burning experience. What is your elevation, have you made changes to your fuel ratio, what is your waste oil supply from and what sort of filtration do you do? I'm not so sure that the exhaust routing is part of my problem, as I have seen videos of people literally running 30 feet of 3/4 inch copper pipe ... I don't even understand how that runs at all, lol... but then again, maybe it doesn't work long term... Cheers !

It looks to me like your exhaust is longer with more bends than the unit is designed to run with. As a mechanic, you know that longer exhaust with more bends (and tight bends like you have) causes restrictions and less flow and that in turn will cause a combustion device like this to run rich. I think it would run leaner and be much better if you ran the exhaust down through a nice sweeping bend and straight out the wall so that you are comparing to what others are also doing. You are the only one I have seen with that long, tight bent exhaust and the only one having that much trouble with carbon buildup in such a short time.
@loweredexpectations4927
@loweredexpectations4927 Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment. Yes, this is true that the a bent exhaust will cause some restriction, however, I am fairly certain that this is not an issue from what I have seen others do. There are videos of people on youtube running these heaters with 30 feet of exhaust, one guy using 3/4 copper pipe and he has probably 12 3/4 inch 90º elbows in the system .... I'm amazed that the thing runs at all , but the fact that it does indicates that my exhaust isn't really the issue. I actually did some porting on my inlet and exhaust the other day to try to get it to run better, and took most of the bends out of the pipe, and it doesn't seem to be helping. I still need to do more testing tho. My carbon is almost certainly due to two factors. One being the quality of my oil and two being that I am at 4000 ft elevation and need a lot more air flow. I have ordered a controller to hopefully adjust this. Cheers.

I'm honestly surprised that these don't have some sort of optical sensor in the back of the combustion chamber. I have a very old (I'm guessing pre-1980) Homelite diesel/kerosene torpedo heater (or slug heater as I've heard em called). Just behind the combustion chamber is a photoresistor that trips a slow-acting breaker after a couple seconds of running without flame, which would then shut off the unit and immediately stop the siphon action (yes it uses a siphon instead of a fuel pump. Ingeniously simple and effective design). Made it a royal PAIN to get it to stay running before I restored and properly tuned it, but once I did it's worked flawlessly in the years since. A photoresistor (or some sort of flame detection) would be an easy way for these units to prevent puking fuel out of the combustion chambers in the event of a flameout. Such a simple design addition yet they didn't do it 🙄

Very interesting. Different ways to skin a cat, as they say. These things are much more cramped for space. There's not much / any room on the burner end, as the fan and air inlet live in that area of the chamber. You could put one on the exchanger, but that is in direct fire of the heat (hot enough to melt copper) and if you get any sooting then it would be covered. My guess is that they need a thermocouple / thermistor for monitoring temp anyway (for emergency shutdown, fuel cut and so on) , so they choose to use this for other things as well. I have seen those heaters and it is shocking to me that they can operate with the siphon system. I would have thought you need much more flow.

To say that it had been running rich is a massive understatement. Exhaust glowing red...fuel in exhaust burning outside chamber. Smoke outside..unburnt fuel. Massive carbon deposits unburnt fuel.
@JoelArseneaultYouTube
@JoelArseneaultYouTube Жыл бұрын
Yeah... that's pretty accurate, but it's not necessarily as clean cut as that. Running the heater really lean also causes the same problem. At a certain point, there isn't enough heat in the chamber to vaporize all of the fuel so it just smoke sand leaves deposits, even tho it is too lean. I have tested it in alpine mode and that seems to be what happens. The main issue that I think I'm having is that I don't' have air fuel ratio control over my heater, the control lacks those functions. I have ordered a new controller that will hopefully allow me to run the fan at full speed and then dial in the fuel flow 👍

Hey, thanks for the comment. This is true. It's not a waste oil heater and real waste oil heaters are several thousands of dollars for small ones. It begs the question, why would people make videos saying will burn anything for years with no issues. Seems like a pretty evil thing to do. Making a video falsely claiming that you've burnt engine oil, trans oil, vegetable oil, then show people oil that you've been burning that has water in it... Go into detail about how you've had it for 3 years, this is the first time that you're cleaning it and it still looks like new, other than a little bit of carbon.

Waste oil needs to be burned at least 600 degrees F, at 400 degrees F it turns it to a type of plastic! This heater can not reach that temperature! The exhaust should go straight down, to lesson that heat build up at turns. I use a 30 foot exhaust, allowing most of that heat to be released inside of my house, instead of outdoors!
@loweredexpectations4927
@loweredexpectations4927 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I think you are confused about burn temperatures and this heater.... The body temperature of this heater is limited to 230C as a safety, but the burn chamber temperature is around 900C (1650F). A fairly low burn temperature would be 600C (1112F). As long as the exhaust exits, I'm not terribly concerned about the exhaust pipe getting hot. That is very interesting, 30 feet of pipe is a lot of restriction. I am surprised that it runs at all. Good to know. Or do you have a larger diameter pipe ?

I've been running mine at 2625ft (800m) above sea level in altitude compensation mode for several weeks straight without issue. The unit I have just DUMPS heat into the unfinished basement I have it in. My exhaust pipe is simply stuck up in a wood stove, and I do have a Carbon Monoxide detector to keep the 'wake up dead' effect down a bit.... but so far it has to be burning super clean as it puts out just as much heat as it did a little over a month ago when I got it. I like your mods though, so please keep experimenting and sharing! I think you should (if you haven't already) look into an aftermarket controller. Thanks for the detailed comment. Yeah, I think there are 30 videos in this series, so I have had a LOT of advice / suggestions and comments from people. Diesel is pretty happy running lean, so even if you run it on "alpine mode" (with less fuel) they will generally just make less heat. The only way you should have sooting is if you are running in "normal" mode when you are at high elevation. I am at 3500 (ish) feet and have run mine in normal mode... no issues if it's on clean diesel. If you have a decent draft, this shouldn't be an issue... but, yes, you don't want to wake up dead, so a CO screamer is a good idea. If you are awake, the symptoms will alert you that something isn't ok... but lots of people die in their sleep. Friends of my family, a father and son died in their home made RV trailer. I now have a bluetooth controller (and a few different heaters) and a company called Bureck has just mailed me out a controller to test. Seems interesting. Cheers !

Although there are no mixture jets on these such as you have on jet skis, or other carbuerated internal combustion engines, there is a way to adjust the fuel/air mixture which I'm sure you know needs to be done any time you change fuels. Of course, they don't tell you about it in the user manual, but you can find out about it from others on KZbin showing how to do it. You have to get into the user settings on the controller, type in the secret code, then you have access to the fan speeds and fuel fuel pump hertz, which can then be adjusted. This MUST be done if you expect to be able to run it on waste oil or vegetable oil.

The controller that I was using at this point, and for most of my future videos, did not have the option to change the pump hz separate from the fan. Many controllers do have this option, but this one didn't. The way you can tell is that the digits on my controller are blue / green ( blue controller, blue digits = no go) The one with the red digits does have this ability. Altho this would be ideal, oils actually have a MUCH wider acceptable AFR than gasoline, so this not entirely accurate. Diesel for example can run all the way from 14 to 75:1 or something like that... while gasoline just won't burn at all when it is that lean. Oils tend to have a much wider acceptable afr range.

Right on. If you have the room for it, a waste oil furnace is a much better answer... Even a home made one. The flame out after combustion air fault.... Hmmm. I don't know how smart your heater is, but on mine, the only way it would know anything about combustion air is if the motor was dieing or had a bad connection. There's no air flow sensor or anything else that would indicate to the ecu anything about combustion air. Perhaps if the air inlet is plugged the ecu would see a high current draw to the motor, so check to see if the inlet is plugged. Also, if ti is not set with the exhaust pointing down, and it has flooded, fuel could be building up and causing drag on the combustion air fan... That's about all I can think of. They are really easy to work on, and if it's already broken, then you have nothing to lose. Good luck. Let me know if I can help in any way. Cheers.

If you burn a fuel blend containing waste oil in one of these heaters, there will be endless problems. In the UK the price of diesel is £1.80 ltr, heating oil is 80p a ltr, so depending on where you are located the heating oil option, is likely to be much better than messing with waste oil blends.

My videos will show that this is likely not the case. Good advice for those who have access to heating oil. I'm not sure what it is here in Canada, but we typically have to purchase it 300 litres at a time or get charged a huge delivery fee.. and they won't deliver it unless you have a proper certified fuel storage tank. Lots of people use heating oil on the east coast of Canada, but the delivery situation is much the same. That seems like a really good price. Most diesel fuel at the pump has about five percent biodiesel added to improve lubricity and emissions. At least here in the Pacific Northwest it does. The exhaust smell is milder, too. Ultra low sulfur diesel was EPA approved and allowed to have a lower lubricating standard in order to meet the strict emissions rules. Modern diesel engines are designed to accommodate this less slippery fuel, but older engines need more lubricant in their fuel. Mine runs at about 180 - 190 and the burn chamber gets a slight grey deposit but doesn't build up. I reckon you can get it to burn motor oil if you implement a dual fuel system which preheats the motor oil with the exhaust. Blending fuels doesn't work so well as it just burns the fractions that do vapourize at a lower temperature and the rest deposits causing unburnt sludge to enter the exhaust, if that ignites you're in trouble.
@loweredexpectations4927
@loweredexpectations4927 Жыл бұрын
I have done experiments and I have come to that conclusion as well "Blending fuels doesn't work so well as it just burns the fractions that do vapourize at a lower temperature and the rest deposits..." The oil doesn't seem to be able to keep the entrance of the chamber hot enough (with my current set up) so the majority of the burn actually happens outside of the burn area... This is exaggerated when gasoline is mixed, as the gas burns instantly leaving the oil behind with no oxygen. The gas also expands rapidly causing a pressure spikes and lulls that sound like a pulse jet engine.
@dr_jaymz
@dr_jaymz Жыл бұрын
@loweredexpectations4927 yes. So what I'd try is start on diesel until it's running at full chat. Have a copper pipe wound around the exhaust right where it exits, which contains the motor oil and then switch to that source. A second pump, a tee piece, and a switch should work because the pumps are naturally one-way valves. It will burn well if it's hot enough, but will it be hot enough... in jet engines the fuel is heated by the design because oil doesn't burn only the vapour does. JP 6 fuel is incredibly incombustible, you cannot light it with a match, and it will put a campfire out! But when heated, it's a different story. My egt is only about 200C and so would only heat to something below that but I think it needs to be more like 250C. Another issue is that multigrade contains additives that deliberately modify its viscosity at higher temps like 100C not sure what they do at 200C but probably interfere with combustion.

It is where it is now because it is easy to access for servicing and filming, but out of the way so I'm not tripping on it. If I can get it to work on waste oil for more than a few days at a time, then I will consider mounting it more permanently. Cheers.

I thought the plan was run from start on diesel until temp reached then switch to waste oil ? Two tanks after 10 min switch ? Reaching temp to burn oil might make it burn clean from then on ? Please do this.

I do not think you can blame the heater for acting up when you are using a fuel it is not supposed to use, its supposed to use Diesel which burns at a fairly low temp compared to other fuels and burns fairly cleanly, if you start using the wrong fuel you can make it burn hotter which results in a very dangerous situation, and when it comes to oil sure it will work and it will burn similarly to Diesel the problem is with using waste oil as it is waste for a reason, in the case of engine oil its contaminated with all kinds of things including a ton of carbon ( this is why it it turns black ) which means when you burn it in the heater the oil burns and leaves behind all that carbon and contaminants that sticks to the walls and the more contaminated your oil the faster it happens. This is why if you are using waste oil you are supposed to run it through several filter stages or use a centrifugal separator to get as much of the contaminants out as you can before you put it in the heater, though it does make me wonder if adding sea foam engine cleaner or similar fuel additive that is supposed to remove and prevent carbon build up would help.
@loweredexpectations4927

Yes, at no point have I blamed the heater... I blame people who make claims that you can burn alternative fuels in these without any issue, and I'm making videos to show that that is likely not the case. These things are wonderful for burning diesel 👍 I have been doing a lot of testing and plan on trying some fuel additives. Thanks for the comment.

1. You cant mix ( CH3OH ) Methanol with Diesel , lol , 2. Try Kerosene in it , runs clean and flawless, but don't use 2 highest settings 3. Never run used oil in those units , bad juju. 4. Replace the fuel line with copper or at least automotive grade rubber hose. 5. Invest in the ' upgrade ' style muffler that makes a huge difference and wrap the exhaust pipe in a heat protective wrap. 6. The Vevor model is Junk. I will 100% worry about the exhaust if I can get this to run more than 2 days on waste motor oil. 6. I have looked around many placed and decided to buy the Vevor one based on price, quality and delivery time. Many of them look the same but from what I saw the Maxspeedingrods were the worse ... a lot of them just have a rheostat control and look more cheap than anything from anyone else. Maybe I just didn't see the ones you were talking about? I'm also pretty sure you are wrong about them not being made in China... Did you say you were at 4000ft altitude? With normal settings on diesel, you are likely running with 15-20% excess fuel! Meaning, with these basic (cheaper) controller/motherboard combination, you should already be operating in ‘plateau’ mode! At that altitude, you have little opportunity to run with any enhanced calorific value fuel. For the better controller/motherboard combinations there are tables on the net showing settings for fan speed snd pump rate for running at altitude. Not many people realise how this can affect the heater efficiency, I think. Running on 28s kerosene would certainly help to prevent sooting-up, but I’m not sure exactly, without a few calculations, how much it would likely help. A lighter fraction, still would be better - but with less lubricity your pump would soon fail. Many at, or around, sea level run their heaters with 28s Kero - but on diesel settings. Of course they run cleaner - because they are burning ‘lean’ and inefficiently. Some may even advocate using plateau mode and kero at low altitude without any clue as to the effects on combustion. Heating air, simply to exhaust that extra heat to atmosphere is not even considered by them! Pure wastefulness, at such a lean burn.
@loweredexpectations4927
@loweredexpectations4927 Жыл бұрын
Yup... 4000 ft actually 4445 ft... At this altitude we can't make as much heat, or power in my jetskis... true. I have ordered another controller as mine does not have the functionality to change fan speed independent of the pump. I'm told that this may not work without also replacing the ecu... we'll see. We have to have different furnace settings in our house and our gas water heater is actually set up for high elevation as well. It's a thing that we have to deal with here. I'm experimenting with waste oil mixes to try to make a budget fuel. I currently have two heat sources in my garage hooked to natural gas, but I have a free source of oil. Kerosene here is about $5/ gallon, so it's not a terribly cost effective measure. I am considering trying a cetane booster in a waste oil / diesel mix... and other things. The experimentation has just begun, haha. Thanks for the comment and the tips !
