That Swiss cliffline was the doom of me in my favorite game ever. A regicide, three hours spent assaulting my friend's Korean-Balkan fortress all gone to waste when he countered with an Onager landing on Sicily- I evacuated to the northern Alps, but accidentally left my king outside a castle. He Spied and chased me down with War Wagons. It was an execution squad lined up across that cliff- I had just enough time to scroll over, witness the coup, and yell.

Last time I had a team game 4vs4 on Earth. One of our team resigned at the very beginning, so we were 3vs4, and we took the Americas, while enemies had the entire rest of the world, and plenty of resources. I thought the only way to win that game was by wonder, because 3vs4 seems impossibile on that massive map. So as soon as reached imperial, i put 50 vills on the wonder. They eventually destroyed our fleet, and one of us resigned, so near the end we were 2vs4, but we managed to stand somehow, and won by wonder. Awesome game.

I've played a bunch of games on the earth map with friends and more than once I've gotten nearly wiped and had to get on the transport ship and flee to another continent. It makes for an interesting mix of sea, land, and "oh shit there's an enemy literally right next to me!"

Real world maps aren't that popular because they are not symmetric, allowing players to get an unfair advantage based on position. Standard maps usually allow balanced distribution of land and resources among players and teams.

Some of these maps makes me wish villagers could build a bridge over short distances so you dont have to make a fleet of transport ships to get over 4 titles of water. Edit: To furthermore clarify, these highly mixed maps dont do well for AI either, if there is a sea, AI will focus on navy but it fails to utilize transport ships in sufficient number to be any threat to you. And this works against the player that you need to maintain a large and steady flow of units to the meat grinder that will be the landing zone on the AI island because it has like 70-120 Hussars/Knights and archers there waiting to be loaded. And the fact that AI heavily focuses on sea means they like dont attack you with land units and you can happily boom with your economy and then you can simply march with your big land army to their city and destroy everything before the AI manages to make sufficient retaliation forces.

Oh, I’ve been waiting for this!! I remember being the only one of my 4 buddies on the far side of the Tigris and Euphrates on the Middle East map. They were all stuck with the 4 hardest AI’s on the rest. Walled the shallows with castles and siege onagers set to attack ground while waves upon waves of AI armies charged across like a soviet division. Eventually broke out and met up with my buddies who relocated and reboomed over across the Red Sea. Man, LAN parties were great!

Most cool dinosaurs are Jurassic-Cretacious periods. The former is varying stages of Laurasia-Gondwana split, the latter is no less than 4 land masses even at early stages. That being said, it would be cool to see a Dinosaur timed mode with evolving stages, where you have to not only kill opponents, but go avian and have enough units (And even better, out of blast zone) before K-Pg extinction hits. This way you get full bang out of progression, need to conserve your population, but the guys near the crater got constant pressure and have to push HARD.

Problems like this also tend to run into lore-logic deadlock, when lore is built around defective map and efforts to adjust said map cause fanbase uproar, which is a petri dish for problems such as fanbase split and/ir death of franchise itself.

It is a universal law that, within 2 minutes of mentioning the Mercator projection, someone will use the ol' Greenland vs. Africa comparison. It's apt and I have no problem with it, but it's like seeing an old friend at this point. P.S. for those who don't know, the Mercator projection is basically an outdated form. It's useful for navigation, since a straight line on this map will (with some orienteering work) allows sailors to move in basically a straight line in the real world (though it's more complicated than that I'm sure). That being said, Euro-centrism certainly did not hurt from this projection's widespread distribution in classrooms, businesses, etc. It became outdated once satellites and GPS took off, but by then it was so standard that few people felt like changing it, which in some ways is understandable. There are some much more aesthetically pleasing alternatives, though, like the Winkel-Tripel preferred by NatGeo.

Imagine there was some third party software where you could select an area of map from Google earth and an AI will try to autogenerate the area (and elevations) in AOE2. Maybe even determine what animals and trees to generate depending on the general longitude and latitude of the map. It would autogenerate the code and create a map file you can load in game. I just had an idea for a map: Besieged. one player/team starts off with a full walled in city and a stockpile of resources, but no way to get more without venturing out of their walls. The other side starts with a small army and access to a good amount of resources. The besieged team basically need to win a war of attrition, maintaining their stockpile until the besieging team runs out of resources trying to break through the defenses. The besieging team on the other hand needs to establish containment as quickly as possible to prevent the besieged team getting a foothold outside their settlement and gathering resources.

Technically one at a time is better because it minimizes the amount of the time you have 2 animals decaying. The difference is maybe 10-15 more food, I would think.

I did (and still do!) quite like beating up the AI in the O.G. Italy, but I can see why those changes would make it better for multiplayer. Although once or twice I did meet that rare if-you-shoot-at-a-cliff-it-vanishes bug in northwest Italy, which is kind of what they have done on a less grand scale

Even better if they have their bonuses (i.e. state of Han makes the best weapons, so discounted blacksmith tech. Qin has more aggression so +1 attack for all units, Yan is great at defenses so better walls and towers, etc)

Earth is my favorite map because i live there haha No but seriously it's still my fave because it's a better diplo map than pilgrims nothing imo. It's freakishly huge sure, but it still gives so much variety to the game. Landmass shapes don't exactly change all that much but with also resources being so packed with stupidly massive amounts of fish, it basically is the closest one can really get to deathmatch conditions in non-deathmatch modes without starting with extra resources. I would honestly kill to play this on DE with people, but my computer can't handle it. I remember having stupid fun just playing this with and against my dad back in the AoK days.

Ah earth. I played that recently. Ended up getting ousted from my starting location in Africa and pinched between two players both trying to kill me, only to have the rest of the map rise up against both players. I also ended up with so many siege onagers from a panic building I did as a resettled into Eurasia. Kinda quit once I got a moment as the player with the most resources when fighting broke out between North and South America and I swept their navy away.

I must agree with the earth map, especially when you play with friends, each team has 2players a take a continent for them and a civ that is from that continent.. its fun but i am a little bit dissapointed you dint include bohemia map :( i love that map alot :) its a nomad kinda map but the locations and strategies are alot their with controling bridges etc :)

One map I would like to see is an Italian map with Mount Vesuvius as an active volcano that could randomly erupt, killing any units within a certain range. As in real life, the area around the volcano would be rich in resources (especially food), making it a tempting but dangerous place to build up.

The Texas map got so offended by not being bigger than the Australia one that the state it's now floating through the ocean to crash into Australia, that's why it left the U.S
