The Templars are most excellent soldiers. They wear white mantles with a red cross, and when they go to the wars a standard of two colours called balzaus* is borne before them. They go in silence. Their first attack is the most terrible.** In going they are the first, in returning the last. They await the orders of their Master. When they think fit to make war and the trumpet has sounded, they sing in chorus the Psalm of David, ‘ Not unto us, O Lord’ (Non nobis, Domine, Ps. 115), kneeling on the blood and necks of the enemy, unless they have forced the troops of the enemy to retire altogether, or utterly broken them in pieces. Should any one of them for any reason turn his back to the enemy, or come forth alive (from a defeat), or bear arms against the Christians, he is severely punished: the white mantle with the red cross, which is the sign of his knighthood, is taken away with ignominy, he is cast out from the society of the brethren, and eats his food on the floor without a napkin for the space of one year. If the dogs molest him, he does not dare to drive them away. But at the end of the year, if the Master and the brethren think his penance to have been sufficient, they restore him the belt of his former knighthood. These Templars live under a strict religious rule, obeying humbly, having no private property, eating sparingly, dressing meanly, and dwelling in tents.

@@iamalittler No they don't, nothing even close. Their scriptures say little-to-nothing about protecting the poor, the widow and the defenceless. They have mostly very vague verses which are open to wild interpretation. Their god does not care about his people. The God of the Bible (Jesus Christ) does care about His people, so much that He came and died for them, even His enemies, knowing that even His enemies must bend the knee, confess He is LORD and face His judgement at the end if they do not repent and turn from their wicked ways. God is not asking people to repent, He has commanded that all repent and place their faith and trust in His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, through whom we an have eternal salvation and security in His sacrifice.

@Outdoors Bushman How strong you are is irrelevant. A belt over chain mail will help distribute the weight off your shoulders and onto your hips, which will help immensely with fatigue. Allowing you to conserve your strength for more important thing such as battle, rather than time just carry your own weight.

I often wondered why the Templars (or any of the military-religious Orders, for that matter) didn't use the Hunnic saddle design (high front and back), which allowed the rider to use both hands and still control the horse and not fall off.

They would have a much harder time....dismounting to fight in that style saddle .. It was difficult at best to mount wearing chain mail...but it was absolutely necessary the rider be able to dismount quickly

The primary weapon of war in this era was a spear or lance, even on foot. Swords were both a mark of knighthood and what we would refer to today as a "personal defense weapon." Think of it as the medieval equivalent of a modern sidearm. Just as a modern soldier carries a rifle and a pistol today, medieval soldiers carried a spear and sword.

There were Chapterhouse all over Europe.. there is a cross on the road from holyrood to Edinburgh castle, it marks the spot where the Templar chapter house was....it's called (St Johns Cross) a Maltese cross

I can see how even during the American civil war how the flag was so important instrument to rally around during battle something inherited from the Knights Templar.

Oct131917 Nearly all ancient and medieval armies used flags to denote the location of the various commanders during a battle. The incredible amount of noise generated by a battle rendered common voice commands useless. Only marginally more successful were commands given by bugles or drums. The tradition of various bungle calls still remains in many countries today, especially the U.K. And the US. Each flag gave soldiers the ability to determine how things were going for their side. Likewise, by moving their flags, commanders could direct their troops to new locations, as well as to attack or retreat. When the Templar flag fell, then all Templars were to immediately go to the flag of the nearest military order, such as the Knights of St. John or the Teutonic Knights. These orders had similar rules that instructed their soldiers to go to the Templars' flag.

The defense of the flag predates the US Revolution. It goes back to late medieval times. The standard was where the lord was. As long as the standard was flying, the lord was still in the fight.

The swords the Templars had were called Arming swords; the greatsword, or the two handed sword most people think of was Renaissance weapon. The longsword came around at about the beginning of the 15th century.

Oh, I'm sure. I don't claim to be an expert, but I do know that the massive two handed swords a lot of us think of were never used before the 16th, 17th and even 18th centuries. Of course there are always exceptions, and if I'm wrong please correct me.

The longsword and two handed two was developed before the 15 th century, however it reached more popularity around that time . But yes the most likely were using a arming sword , very doubtfully a war sword or longsword.

The order was dissolved by the pope 1312 and the last grandmaster burned at the stakes 1314. Molay is said to have shouted out a curse on both the king and pope. He reputedly swore that neither men nor their descendants would live beyond one year and one day from this injustice. And, it is true that both Pope Clement V and King Philip IV died within a year of the execution

The banner/standard/flag was a highly important item at least until the point of the American Civil War. The majority of battle casualties during that war happened around the flags as causing the colors to fall would cause mass confusion and loss of moral among the troops. It's also fascinating to learn why the Confederate States changed their National Flag so many times in the years of the War of Northern Aggression.

@@crunch9876 Yes, in the southern states many people don't, in fact, refer to it as a civil war, but rather by names like the War of Northern Aggression, the War between the States, as well as others. The so called "Civil War" was a war of secession, just like the American war for independence from Britain. The communist revolutions in places like Russia and China would be more realistically comparative to what a civil war would be. But, to the victor goes the spoils, and that includes writing the history books.

17:16 the first king of Portugal was St Bernard of Clairvaux’s nephew. You can look that up. King of Portugal was raised on Templar Estates and signed letters as a brother in arms to fellow Templars. Henry the Navigator was the Grand Master of the Military Order of Jesus. Portugal and Spain as a whole was Templar Territory.

I wonder if they used Battle tactics as was done by the Greeks and Romans... They would maintain their ranks by having the front rows fight for set amount of time 10- 15 minutes maybe ..then upon being signalled the front ranks would fall to the back so that there were always fresh troops in the fight...or did they use Battle surges where they would charge in to melee then pull back for a short rest then repeat ... People often think combatants would engage none stop until a Battle was over , but these Battles could last hours...a man can only swing clubs and edged weapons at each other for a few minutes before becoming exhausted

The last image you have shown is the 2 Templars on 1 horse. In medieval times this was supposed to symbolize the fact that the Templars were under a vow of poverty & in the begining of their founding undoubtedly there were times they did this because of the orders lack of finances. The real origin is however from the Germanic cavalry during roman times, where 2 riders were sent on half the horses so after the initial charge the 2nd rider could dismount & fight against the formation they attacked as infantry,which helped make their cavalry charges more effective before the riders would pick up their dismounted comrades & ride back to their own side.This tactic made them feared by even the Celtic Noble cavalry( considered the best @ the time) who wore more armor than the majority of cavalry units of the time. The germanic cavalry wore little if any armor but did wear helmets & carried sheilds which lessened the burden on the horses which were much smaller @ the time than the medieval heavy warhorse,which was the largest of the horses bred @ the time. To be clear, the Templars would retreat when necessary. Indeed, they did this on many occasions. What they would not do is surrender to be captured. If they were backed into a corner where no retreat was possible, then they would fight to the death. They also were not allowed to abandon their comrades.

They had left the Middle East by the time they were disbanded because they lost Acre in 1291. And Templars weren’t in Russia or Norway. Also it is said that Templars fled to Portugal and Scotland (some people even say they came to America)
