The idea that he had a gentle nature comes from Kingdom of Heaven. Historically, he was not gentle, he was a tough young warrior king.

​@@RealCrusadesHistory In the hands of God somehow, his suffering was unfair yet permitted, perhaps this pain brought out the fullness of his faith and toughness towards the kingdom's final breath. In history, Baldwin IV reminds me of the second to last Emperor of China - Guangxu Emperor in 1908. A lifelong torture and imposed imprisonment before early death, God produced an emperor of intelligence and nobility to make peace and save China. He was the only Chinese emperor in history to learn from English books and read the Bible during imprisonment. He could have been the last chance for the kingdom to survive, which could've changed the course of China's bloody 20th century, even today. Like Baldwin IV, Guangxu's nephew took throne at 2-year-old, the Qing dynasty of China ended 3 years after his death.
