No more planes cause they may crash and first responders may die trying to rescuing you. Hmmm no more dryers in homes because they cause thousands of fires a year. Wow your logic sucks. People need the freedom to explore and entertain themselves. Not only that but there are very few deaths like his. He was no longer a skinny kid. He was a 200 lb man who hasn't been in a cave in years and he made mistakes. We all shouldn't suffer because he died. Life is dangerous. We all will die. Even you. We can't just stop doing things because someone might get hurt. First responders KNOW what they do is dangerous. Saving people is a dangerous business. It was once legal to drive under the influence and when it was made illegal some people thought it was an infringement on individual freedom. These are the same types of people who insisted that a cave system, that was repeatedly proven to be dangerous, should stay open to public use, insisting that closing it is infringing on personal liberties. Safety laws and regulations exist for a reason, and they usually fall into place only after disaster happens. The fact that someone said they'd never heard of any dangerous incidents occurring in the cave before just proves that they did not research or think anywhere beyond their own selfish desires when addressing the issue of the closure.

Agreed. It's also never just about yourself. In this case, several rescuers risked their lives and were injured in their attempts to save him and his child was left without a father. And so many innocents are killed by drunk drivers every year. Making risky choices can affect, hurt, and even kill the people around you (loved ones, rescuers, innocent bystanders), so of course not everyone should be given free reign all the time!

There are three areas on Earth where recovering the remains of people who have died is simply too dangerous to attempt: The tops of tall mountains, inside of underwater caves, and inside of above-water caves. There are still explorers who died on Mount Everest in a seated position inside of an ice cave that mountaineers have to pass every time they climb, a reminder that, if you die up there, no one is coming to claim your body. I saw a video about a diver who could not be recovered after he got lost exploring an undersea cave. That cave is now his tomb. The Nutty Putty caves are now this man's tomb as well. How come they couldn't get him out? He said there was many reason why it all went wrong, the local rescue team that arrived to help was to stubborn to realize they didnt know how to get him out and refused to call for outside help, They werent trained properly on these types of rescues, but his biggest answer was they were trying to do everything they can to not hurt him. And when I asked wouldnt you not want to hurt him either and he said, at first yes you do what you can but if all attempts fail then just rip out and worry about injuries later because at least he wont be in the hole anymore. He always told me remember little Jessica stuck in the well, they tried to pull her out safely but when they couldnt do that a pracademic just grabbed her leg and pulled her and yes he broker her leg when he did that but she is alive today.

My dad was one of the lead rescuers on the Utah County Search and Rescue team that responded to Nutty Putty. My dad was one of the last people to talk to John alive. He seemed to come to terms that this was the end, and fell unconscious shortly after. After he became unresponsive the rescue efforts went from astronomically difficult to impossible. The rescuers left the cave after more hours of trying with anything they could, and shared in a prayer with the family. Every year on Thanksgiving weekend you can always catch my dad in some corner of the house by himself thinking about John. Rest in Peace John. It is because of you that my dad and many members of that Utah County team felt inspired to pay many thousands of dollars to go to the most advanced trench, collapsed, and cave rescues courses and schools that exist within the United States, and as a result, dozens of people were saved.

@extricate1800 just confusing to me. Then again there are an immense amount of caves around the world. Accidents are bound to happen. Just sad this one couldn't be prevented.

If youre caving, then your safety is on you. If you wanna be coddled and your handheld then maybe take up figure skating

Although your safety is on you, if there’s an option to remove a death trap, why not take it?

That poor man, he took a wrong turn and it cost him his life, his poor wife trying to ease his fears, and the rescuers that risked their lives; a tragedy for all involved. How sad that he was left there, so close to life whilst so close to death; what an awful circumstance. God Bless his soul and his family. I was hoping for a more positive outcome.

"poor man" well any average person would tell you this is a bad idea... So i wouldnt say poor.

@@ryanthomas2374 just because you can be warned against something doenst mean that if you get in that position you are not worth sympathy such as your situation being sad or poor.

@@ryanthomas2374 he did not realise the danger. he thought he was entering a generally navigable area. he simply made a wrong turn, and it cost him his life. apathy is never a flex, and emotional maturity is a sign of intelligence. you are clearly not.

I couldn’t even imagine the final moments, before he lost consciousness, the fear he was going through. I couldn’t imagine the regret he must have felt and the mistake he made taking the wrong turn.
