The Last of Us is a celebrated IP beloved for many reasons: its organic, fully-fleshed out characters, its haunting and beautiful landscapes, its violent, gruesome, and brutal take on survival, and its grounded sense of realism compared to most video game narratives. But just how realistic is the world of The Last of Us? The shocking answer is perhaps not as realistic as one might think, though that actually works in The Last of Us’ favor, and we’ll talk about that more at the end of the video.

@@Cangaca777 I completely agree. I don’t understand how fans defend that. Joel had to survive for 20 years in an unforgiving world with no one he could trust. He didn’t even trust that hunter who acted like he was hurt in the first game. So him giving his name up to a shit ton of shady strangers and letting his guard down seems very out of character. People wanna use the excuse that he grew soft after spending 5 years in luxury. But that doesn’t make sense to me, 5 years doesn’t the outdo 20 years he had to survive.

It makes sense to me that production by the US government has continued through the outbreak. In part one Bill says that the only people that have access to new car batteries are the military. Also for the quarantine zones to function for so long they would also require large scale production. The world of The Last of Us is not completely destroyed just mostly. I think that the existence of QZs really helped to preserve America and its culture even if they didn't save it

Such a good video dude!! Some details that came to mind: Dina tell Ellie that the first time she killed someone was at the age of 9. Some guy that was coming after her mother, Ellie gasps at that.. she grew up in the Fireflies, probably had some semblance of Child Culture and Dina grew up a nomad, moving from place to place. Another aspect that probably was not very accurate was Language. Everybody talks and expresses themselves as in 2013, while the newer generations, specially those like Dina would probably have radically different social skills and language. What comes to mid is the movie Threads, this nuclear post apocalyptic film from Britain, which was much worse than The Day After. The first generation born after the bombs fell were feral, communicating in grunts and behaving like animals. Education was non existent and violence had extractores any semblance of whimsy or levity from life. Humorless cavemen, clasped in worn out winter gear inhabiting the wreck of civilization. It was a sobering reminder of hoy tenuous our culture really is, how fragile and how lucky we are. The videos of XIX century children were incredible, ir gave me pause. Cheers!!

Very good points. I've also noticed certain things about their language, Abby telling Lev "that's real punk rock of you" and Ellie saying, "Okay, Sherlock," struck me as out of place--but it's really in the realm of self-admitted over-analysis. I still wouldn't change a thing because this game has the most natural and organic dialog I've ever experienced.

@@WolfofThorns Some references might be a little out there, but I don't think the music stuff is unbelievable! Tommy, Maria, and Joel were all around pre-outbreak, so there's probably still some word-of-mouth pop culture being passed down to younger generations. Nomads probably don't concern themselves with it, but when you're settled down in a place like Jackson or the WLF base, there's a higher chance that there's someone old enough to talk to about that sort of stuff. (And a safe enough place to have those conversations.) Plus, I'm assuming other people would have access to music players, since Ellie and Joel were able to scrounge a tape recorder and record players in the apocalypse.

@@sablemae8853 No one is saying it's impractical for them to have a reason to say it, it just doesn't feel natural. I mean, "that's very punk rock of you," is an obscure saying even today, let alone from an adult who was born after the collapse of society. Even if she has the music, unless her dad taught her at length about the social implications of punk rock from its hey day, it just doesn't strike me as a natural thing for her to say given her environment. Another lovely video, thank you so much! I just want to share some thoughts on how I, in an effort to make these games seem as realistic as possible to myself, tried to explain the existence of goods such as bullets or gasoline. I believe that in the years after the outbreak, FEDRA chose to built the QZ‘s around heavily industrialized complexes, that provide the infrastructure necessary to manufacture the goods at question. I think that the military did, at some point, realize that the „industrialized/producing“ society is never coming back/ falling apart. However there was definitely enough time to built heavily fortified QZ‘s, strategically it would only make sense to built these around infrastructures that would be essential for the military (defense industry, power, food) and then offer shelter to the experts of said industry. There definitely is some sort of high-tech industry and expertise left in the QZ’s (In part 1, Ellie talks about how she goes to school and got a vaccine there, which is only possible if there still are facilities to produce vaccines). I know there are some loose ends, but this is how I try to have an even more realistic experience as I play. Thanks to anyone reading this far, you’re great :).

Interesting. I must have missed the part in my ten playthroughs where they are reloading ammunition. Either way, no one is getting on their hands and knees picking up the brass casings after a battle or acting in a conservative fashion when it comes to using the ammo. And, as was said in my video, canned goods will only last indefinitely if stored in a cool dry place. They do not last forever outside of a climate controlled environment, such as Joel walking into a blasted apartment exposed to the humid elements for thirty years and just scooping up a can off the counter.

Keep in mind though The Last Of Us is a part of the Post-Apocalyptic subgenre of Science Fiction. The key word there is FICTION meaning not real so yeah there's gonna be stuff that makes it easier for survivors than real life.

Would they be able to theoretically make ethanol or something as a gasoline replacement? Also curious if there would be any way to make ammunition with technology available to survivors in this world? I don't know why I find it so interesting but I'm fascinated by what these survivors may be able to come up with that would mitigate the realities you speak of. Thanks for the videos!

The world building doesn't show it to us, but at least until the FEDRA fell, I think they maintained some sort of society with clothes manufacturing, food production (clearly not in the way we do it now), ammunition production too, maybe. And FEDRA might not have disappeared everywhere, In Seattle maybe, but in Boston they are still a thing. And even WLF in Seattle seem to have a society in their stadium, they scout for materials, etc. Maybe they won't make bullets, but I wouldn't be surprised if some people didn't make clothes there. It's not realistic in some extent, but I think it's not that unrealistic though ^^

1. ammo - is indeed very replacable. Plenty people make their own rounds, even more when this is the only option. 2. cleaning materials - you can make your own as well (from bio-fules for example) 3. gasoline - bio-fules as well, methane, alcohol. gasoline is not the only thing the engine can work on. Same as number two, some chemists must have survived. Though you have a point, we are not really meant to think about this as this is never mentioned. 4. clothing - not as fragile if taken care properly (I should know, my basement if full of clothes from 20-30 years ago - granted, they haven't been worn all that time) but yeah. they wouldn't probably all wear such clothes like they do even after ransacking Sears or smth. more likely hand-made from leather or hemp maybe and probably not made as well as they are presented. 5. food and medicine found in the world - right 6. kids - they would most probably have shortened childhoods but people that survived lived in a different world than 100 years ago, so their 'normal' was also different. So I personally don't expect 5 year olds not attending schools or kindergartens to instead run through woods with a pointy stick while in communities. In the open, that's a different story, however kids are kids. You can teach them to do simple tasks and basic survival stuff but they're still kids. They need to entertain their brain. Even animals play a lot especally when they're young. Paper... not so vulnerable, I have papers from around 30 years ago and from the state they're in I can assume they will be good for another 10 or 20 at least. Not every piece has to be lying outside at mercy of elements. 7. letters - too many of them seem like a schizophrenic wrote them - true. But some of them had sense, mostly those that were there to inform others about something in the writer's absence. They're in every such game nowadays. It's hard not have them, the thing is how well and believably they're written. 8. wholeheartedly agree with the conclusion. Good video. Keep it up.

Wouldn't it still be possible to make new ammunition from raw materials though? There are a lot of machine shops with equipment necessary for machining new bullets, casings and even whole guns from raw materials. You fan find recipes for gunpowder in lots of places. For the gas, there have to be places where people still have the knowledge of how to refine petrol.

Gunpowder stays good indefinitely. I found some in my Grandpa’s old cabin that just sat there for 15 years and it still worked. I also found a loaded rifle under the bed in there. Still worked. The conditions in there were just as bad as the buildings in the last of us and the ammo was sitting there for well over 10 years. Certainly a little bit of misinformation in the vid

I think small arms ammunition would be available, actually; the machinery to make gunpowder and probably the ability to re-purpose brass cartridges (and primers) would be seriously bottlenecked but it would be possible. The need for ammunition would be obvious and prioritized, and for the first months of the Outbreak people would secure the things like lathes and the like. That said, I also hypothesize that rapid-firing weapons would be discouraged, and we'd see simpler, low-capacity weapons built because they are simpler and also consume less ammo. So, we'd see revolvers, pump and break actions, lever and bolt actions, instead of semi or full auto. People would be trained to preserve and collect spent brass, and maybe punished for not doing so. Kids would probably start their firearm training as brass collectors. But the fuel and oil problem would make things seriously hard, and within a year the restricted manufacturing that got people through the Outbreak would begin to erode further, and we'd then downgrade to arrows & blades. Whoever still had access to firearms and ammo would be rare, and they would be the local warlords.
@WolfofThorns
@WolfofThorns 3 жыл бұрын
Speaking for my perspective only, the inescapable problem is, you need petroleum based products to maintain lathes, machining equipment, as well as the firearms themselves, all of which becomes part of the cascading domino effect of the fall of the refinery age some thirty years after collapse. Mankind rapidly returns to primitivism with the loss of our great numbers and the structure of an advanced civilization. In a more realistic simulation, everyone would more or less look like the Seraphites and, while interesting, that's a completely different IP.

I believe that there is still a possibility of clothes and such being manufactured, in highly guarded facilities, and that militaristic organisations, like FEDRA, still have acces to that. As for towns like Jackson, I don't know. Maybe they have some sort of experts for these kind of things living in their town, thus the power plant is still running. I believe this to be a possibility. The knowledge on how to do these things isn't gone.

Hey man I just had this question. What would’ve happened if Henry and Sam and Tess were alive. and Marlene also Sarah determined. And if they were in last of us part 2. The story would’ve been altered right but certain death scenes will be the same but the characters are so replaced or the outcome might’ve been different. And Ellie and Tommy are still the antagonists. and New characters will be introduced because you know if Marlene is determined🙂. {Just for a disclaimer I love last of us part 2 it’s a great story I would like to see a part 3}

I can remember having fleeting thoughts of how much worse this world would be in reality, and you did a fabulous job of breaking down the specifics! I tried to rationalize it, thinking that maybe a few factions took over old industrial facilities to manufacture things like ammo and canned goods. But in the harsh, "real" post-apocalyptic world... probably not. These a very good things to think about for those who are getting ready for the zombie apocalypse! And I remember Gilley's!!!!!! Not from the movie, but from having parents who both worked in Pasadena. 😁
