I'll try this thanks, I use my micro liquid mask for the chipping effects on heavy chipping then washes off or same as this with kitchen grease proof paper then paint it reminds me if getting the heat gun out and doing the glossing on skirting boards that's what gave me the idea of the liquid mask I only have acrylic water get from both AK and vallejo that's a clear liquid might work as don't have any matt clear medium if that's what was used?
@JeffReiten
@JeffReiten 4 жыл бұрын
I use the the matte clear acrylic paint just in case the paint doesn't stick in areas-matte won't stand out..gloss clear would stand out..you could probably even just use white/elmers glue with a touch of water in place of the clear matte paint

Can't argue with your results... the effect looks stunning! But why the added step of the vaseline coat? Is it just to cut down on paint adhesion to the wax paper? If so, could the same effect be obtained by putting your acrylics directly onto parchment paper, which acrylic paint is much less likely to adhere to? Just wondering...I don't mind cutting corners where I can, as long as it doesn't effect the quality of the finished piece - I work slowly enough as it is.
@JeffReiten
@JeffReiten 4 жыл бұрын
Hey fotzilla, Thank You!!- Yep it just cut down on the acrylics adhering to the wax paper...I have tried it without the vaseline and it does still work but not as well...I haven't tested it with parchment paper yet-the best result come with using a flat piece of silicone mold material but most don't have that available..no vaseline needed with that

Hi there , love ur work and been trying to get the same effect but struggling to get it to peel off . Do u wait till the varnish is dry? And do u need the wood to be moist or bone dry?
@JeffReiten
@JeffReiten 2 жыл бұрын
Hey samson! Thank You!...I wouldn't wet the wood - that will cause the varnish to spread and become diluted and then let the varnish dry (1 or 2 hours) before removing the wax paper..that should get you the results your looking for!

This looks great, beautiful work. Two qeustions. 1) how long do u let the paint dry on the vaseline before putting on the wood stick? 2) how long do u leave the sticks on the paint for a good chip effect?

@geofromalimos

Hello Jeff, this is a very nice technique, and thank you for sharing it with us! I have noticed at the beginning, that when you apply the matt varnish in the wood, it is not "absorbed" and it stays in the surface. What kind of wood are you using? I am trying to do the same thing with balsa 1mm thich without success!
@JeffReiten
@JeffReiten 3 жыл бұрын
Hey George, Thank You!!...I think most of what I use is Basswood very similar to balsa wood...Basically the "weathering" of the wood with the paint kinda ends up sealing it just enough to keep the flat finish from absorbing .....so I would just paint the wood with a few "washes" of paint water mix-if you dont want to color the wood just paint it with a flat finish wash let dry overnight...this should seal it up..Hope this helps and good luck!

Jeff, this is the most realistic chippy, layered effect! Amazing👏😍 Looks like white paint was dry before placing wood on wax paper. Is that correct? Also, were you just adding a little water to paint alone or and can you explain the last step, the enamel/thinner and what that does? I have tried so many techniques and mediums to try to achieve that true organic look of antique, aged layers upon layers of paint and you did it with this! Thanks for sharing!
@JeffReiten
@JeffReiten Жыл бұрын
Hey fabNforgotten!! 😮😁 Thank You!! - You are Correct..I let the paint dry on the waxpaper before applying the flat finish clear acrylic paint to the wood which then act like the glue to pull the dried paint off the the waxpaper.....I added a little water to the light blue paint just so it would "bead up" and create a kinda chipped paint effect ..then repeated the flat finish on wood to act as glue..this time I flicked the paint on the wood....For the final effect after all the layering of Acrylic paint I then thinned some enamel paint with thinner for a final wash effect to bring out detail and kind of pull everything together..I use the enamel paint and thinner so it wont effect the acrylic paint...let me know if you have anymore questions...Good Luck and Thanks Again for the Kind Compliments!!!!

Hi Jeff, i just saw this great technique of yours and i think is just amazing; I’ve worked with so many specialty products for antiquing finishes and never had al least a slightly close result to this! I have a question: I assume the role for the varnish is to work a an adhering agent for the paint to stick, im i right? Is there any substitute for the varnish you could recommend?
@JeffReiten
@JeffReiten 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Daniel! Thanks1 I Appreciate the Compliments!!😊..Yep the role of the Varnish is to act as an adhesive.....The clear matte varnish seems to work the best but I have used matte medium (paint medium) the other thing I experimented with was using enamel or lacquer paints and then reactivating them with paint thinner..that had some pretty good results..hope this Helps and thank again!
