Fair warning. I own a 2011 GT. Engine, transmission, transfercase and differential are flawless. The rest of the car is falling apart from rust. Avoid a used model if you live above the rust line. The main issue with the Outlander is lack of quality parts. As it ages, the front control arms will give out. Generally you'll find this out during an inspection or wheel alignment. Since you wont have time to wait on a pair of OEM arms from the internet (since there seems to only be a mitsubishi dealer every 500-1000 miles), the shop will only be able to purchase the lower quality aftermarket parts that all fail within a year of install (seriously, regardless of brand all the aftermarket arms fail in a year.)

I'm from the UK and have a 2011, GX3 model with the 2.3 DiD engine, with the upgraded leather seats which are the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in. It has 100,000 miles on it, came with full service history, and is the metallic grey with 18 inch upgraded alloys like in the video. I have to say the refinement, the ride and the MPG which averages 48mpg is fantastic. I love this car. Great video by the way.

It was my first car in 2011 where I grew up in Florida. Kept it with me when I went to college in upstate New York where it survived every snowstorm. Lived there for 8 years, 30 minutes from the Vermont border. I really relate with this review - it always gave me a smile on curvy roads. It’s like a Miata style of driving in an SUV, and I have yet to drive another vehicle that can do the same for me. Finished professional school last year and moved to Nevada and took the car with me. I’ve camped in it and have fit furniture in it. Watched mountain sunsets from the tailgate. Surviving 11 years and 100k miles with me strong. My first car. I enjoy driving it so much I don’t want to get a new car, even if someone offered me a free replacement. It’s simple, practical, unique, fun to drive, and there’s something special and lucky with having a car you don’t see on the roads because like how this review nails it, it went “overlooked.”

Standing on the hatch to access the skibox on the roof. Im the only owner of mine, and its going to stay that way for a long time. They dont make cars like this anymore!

I have heated seats in 2012 Outlander Norway. Also have power seats. The gear shifters are great for decending mountains and fjord roads. I love my Outlander. This car was #1 - #5 sold in Norway for many years.

I have had 2 Outlanders over the past 10 years and I can say they are HIGHLY underrated. Versatile, practical, even looks so good after all these years. I love my reliable landie to bits. It even has cornering lights which turn on when you take a corner, many more thoughtful things like the fact that you can press a button to fold up the rear seats while standing at the boot lid.

I have a 2012 GT this thing is a rocket. That 6 cylinder kicks in and I got camaros looking over at me saying WTF. I have only used the shifter paddles once or twice the automatic transmission is smooth and gives me what I need. I had a company pick up for the last several years and it sat with right at 80k on it. Replaced the battery and 4 years later she immediately reminds me why I bought this car. So Much Fun to drive!

I inherited a 2008 with the Rockford Fosgate system from my Dad and its the best vehicle I've ever driven, its fast, comfortable, quiet, handles impeccably, and the stereo is amazing, I also love the hard drive onto which you can record every cd you play. A fantastic motor.

In 2008 i was shoping for a new rav4 or crv with minimal options got fully loaded outlander for like 10 grand less the handling is what sold me my wife still drives it every day i have only changed the rear shocks and a power steering motor

I own a 2011 Outlander 2.4l SE. Been nothing but a great vehicle as I'm 6'6" and always has been comfortable for me although you're right I do wish steering wheel can be adjusted but it still works regardless. Loved the tailgate and the cargo room. Rolling at 105k miles now (brought at 40k miles) nothing but regular maintenance in the last 5 years under my name. I drive off roading in it, went through harsh snow conditions and freezing weather at -40, long road trips, and it goes on, it doesn't fail to impress me! I don't really care about "cheap looking dashboard" people has been saying because I'm all for simple design. This Outlander is just too perfect in my book.

I had 2 of these, an '07 with the V6 and a '13 with the I4. I definitely missed having the V6 but the '13 had the Rockford Fosgate stereo. That stereo was LOUD. I miss that the most. Never had any issues with both of them. They were great SUVs.

Had my 2008 3.0 V6 for 3 years now - absolutely reliable, super fun to drive and quite the looker for its category in our market (Kenya) ... Replaced the radio head unit with a CarPlay stereo and I’ve fallen in love with the car all over again. Paired with the a new Amplifier and the Rockford Fosgate sound system everyone gets super jealous about the quality and loudness of my music haha 😅. Rear suspension seems to ride low even without cargo and lately having concerns about my braking, really considering upgrading the system.

@Wilko The 2008 was getting up there in mileage and the 2011 had a LOT more options. It is fully loaded while the 2008 was the base model (but with the V6 and AWD). The 2008 was bought new and the 2011 was bought used in 2015

I have the 2011 EX got it with 35k miles it has 139k now and it runs as well as when I got it at 35k miles. The body still shines but I did have to paint some areas that were coming off. I replaced the computer once at 120k miles $800 otherwise it's a gem. I just got a 2018 Kia Sorento EX V6 with sunroof but prefer the Mitsubishi for neighborhood/city driving and for getting a quick bite to eat or running errands. It excels at this. The car has no rattles to it and other Otlander Sport models get caught gazing at mine with it's accessories installed.

2010 outlander GT 160k miles on it. Replaced a/c compresor, shocks,and rusty coolant line and regular maintenance all in 14 years of use. Super reliable, in my opinion I have taken this suv trough snow storms And thanks to the great awd have arrived to my destination with ease. Cargo room is excellent I'm able to fit my mountain bikes inside the car with the front wheel off. Also I'm able to get 23/24 mpg On the highway if I feather the gas pedal. And to top it off only 40 bucks to fill the tank from empty. I'm planing on keeping this wonderful vehicle until the wheels fall off. Because I'm looking and can't find anything that can compare to what I have.

I had mine for 10 years, never let me down on the road as long as your upto date with your maintenance, i have 160 k miles still run like new. He is right its fun to drive, drove it several snow storm no problem at all. It is cheap to maintain. I highly recommend this car if you want a reliable car specially it has timing chain for the 4 cylinder engine.

Yeah, they kind of became what they used to be the alternative to. The new outlander still has the same engines and transmissions which is a good thing for dependability and power if you get the v6. Outside of the reliable powertrain, it doesn't offer a feature that separates it from the competition like the super low cargo floor, lancer looks, split tailgate and trick awd system (i guess it still has that at least). But they got rid of all of their cool cars to try to save themselves and it has so far worked. They are back to their pre-recession sales in the US at least. But at what cost!

Just checked your video, that's not the same car. The car you tested is a much smaller crossover called Mitsubishi ASX everywhere else in the world, except in USA where it's called Outlander Sport: It has nothing to do with a proper Outlander. Not a bad car at all, just lacks the space and ground clearance of real Outlander.

Honestly, this car should last your entire life if you take care of it just like any other car, but especially Asian branded cars. I get the early models were in the 90's were junk but these 2009's and up are nothing like their predecessors. I'm getting one today hopefully.

I drive a 2.2 disel lock dif version of this. It's pretty awesome to be honest and with different wheels - 16" with a bit more fat on them gets rid of the most annoying drawback - it's a bit rough.

Nice review. I am in the market for one as a daily driver so my Montero can be strictly a weekend trail / camping rig. I am researching that the V6 version with the traditional A/T transmission is the way to go. I am totally fine getting around 22-25 ish MPGs. Its way better than the amazing 14mpgs my 98 Montero gets😅

The GLS version in Argentina is quite good, you don't have the 3rd seat row, in exchange you have plenty of room for storage and some other features like leather covers where you rest the elbows. Not all of these has the rockford big speaker at the back, but its sounds great anyway. To be honest the Outlander surpass in many ways other SUVs of it's generation, and has a good relation between mechanics and confort.

My parents have a first generation Outlander, this is their second Mitchu. First they had a ‘91 Lancer for 18 years. Back then Mitchu was a semi premium brand, one of the better Japanese. I remember the Lancer was a really good car, and reliable for a long time. Highly engineered, and good looking. They had a whole lineup of great car. So sad to see, what this company has become. Now they are more known of their air conditioners than cars.

Ummm... Mitsubishi was definitely NEVER anywhere approaching a premium brand. They've always been the econo-box Japanese brand with the focus being on bigger engines which were paid for with shitty interiors. This has balanced out a little in recent years... but they're still pretty flimsy inside.

For us Indians, we would expect this specific Gen of Mitsubishi Outlander to be launched with only diesel engines, which also includes Groupe PSA's 2.2L DW12 _(2179cc)_ diesel engine, and is also popular in many Indian SUV's and pickup trucks and that also they are Non-PSA vehicles. I like Outlander the most of Mitsubishi, but this one is more appealing to me, for it was the last one to have button functions in cockpit, and special rear opening allowing Luggage to be kept on the floor of the lower gate.

What a great review. I have a 2011 Outlander SE, and it has the Rockford Fosgate sound system BUT, I don’t know how, I didn’t turn on the sound when I went for a test drive, and it turns out that the sound doesn’t work. Hahaha But on most of the things you were saying, I could agree, looks and feels cheap in some areas and great in other, I like the way that the windshield sprays the water in a few sprays. Love the tailgate. The seats are not that comfortable as you said and, I do Uber, so imagine that!!! Haha but in general, people seem to enjoy it.

Just got a 2014 and had the same issue. Looked online and found that it was a blown Fuse. Drove back to the dealership and had it sorted in an hour. Check your Fuse for radio or Amp. Most likely the issue.. Good luck

The funny thing is that there’s some kind of buzzing sound that comes out of the speakers (all of them), and it sounds like there’s a ghost trying to contact me hahahaha Some people said that it could be the amplifier, but I couldn’t buy one yet.

Great review. To me Mitsubishis are almost as reliable as a Toyota, and better than Subaru because they don't have headgasket or oil consumption issues. (that's only on 4 cylinder Subarus though, the H6s are great, all of them, new or old) Mitsubishis don't rust as bad as Mazdas or Nissans either. Yes it's a bit "tinny" feeling inside, to me it was just about as refined as my '11 Scion XB. Is it the best, no, but how good do cars really need to be as far as NVH goes? It's not a creak fest in there like early 2000 GM vehicles. Real reason I was one is because I want a cool AWD setup for snow and most everything is 90% FWD Haldex. Mitsu builds a nice AWD system. I want to look forward to snow days and take my kids out for parking lot drifting. The 3.6R Outbacks have great AWD too with the VDC setup giving a 45/55 front rear split, but they cost a lot more and are a bit vanilla compared to a Mitsu. The 6 cylinders have a decent 5 speed auto with paddle shifters as well, but they went full CVT after '14. I never drove one so I don't know how good they feel in comparison to the Outlander. I only drove a 3.0 model with the 5 speed auto. It was nice, but most of them are old and rusty now. Enjoy the car, if I don't get one I might find a Montero (Which I drove. It's slow but very fun with the 5 speed auto, loaded with character, and has the visibility of a semi truck) or wait and get a 3.6R Outback.

Yes, I agree, they are pretty dependable, they just don't use the best materials or anything, not much fluff to them. I don't know which country you are from but in the US, the V6 is paired with a 6 speed auto and is actually still available with that powertrain new (3.0l with 6spd auto), the 4 cylinder is CVT only unfortunately but it gets the job done for most I guess. Intriguing car because on paper, the Mitsubishi Outlander should have put up a much better fight than it did. But fresh out of the global recession it was the Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4 that were the biggest winners. A poor reputation of being cheap and unreliable while being not abundantly value priced is what allowed it to be forgotten while Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, and Volkswagon weathered the storm. For all it’s intelligent design features and tech, the interior was very cheap with brittle hard plastics and a loaded diaper steering wheel. The seats also lacked any ergonomic bolstering. I like the in a pinch 3rd row and split tailgate. Mitsubishi deserved better.

Honestly, it just needed a little more budget, as far as reliability goes, it pulls ahead of others from the era when it comes to the more important things. The cheapness of certain areas really did tank its mass appeal though. I wish the new one didn't get rid of all the cool stuff this one had like the looks, tailgate, and fun to drive nature.

I have a 2012 and should have the same 6 speed auto and it is a duel clutch auto. Heavy floor mats, added extra insulation in tailgate and rear quarter panels. It is loud. Very reliable at 125000 miles.

@@Realistick I bought a new 2012 Outlander XLS V6 and had roof racks, DVD player and a hitch installed when I bought it. Since we took possession of the vehicle from purchase we went camping and the back end bottomed out quite a bit and it did not seem stable. Took it back and they replaced the back springs which was better but I have always hated the rear suspension in this vehicle. Other than that I enjoy and can live with everything else it has to offer. It has been functional for me with only regular maintenance to be performed. The other thing was as you said in your video... the seats (especially the front) are very uncomfortable and I found that I too had neck pain for a long time before I got use to it. I also hate the 3rd row and would never put anyone that I care about back there.... actually, I never have used them and often thought of taking them out. Engine is good and stereo is very good but I can not figure out how to delete the songs on the HD.... Rust has not been an issue and in 2020 it has close to 200Kms on it; going strong. I absolutely love my 2012... I can say as well that pre 2010 did NOT have BT Audio- just BT calling. The modules go bad on them. It's beginning to fail in my 2012 and in my moms 2009 it no longer is recognized at all by the head unit lol

Interesting, I ended up actually buying this one and while I haven't had issues with the blue tooth, I have had 2 weird electrical issues. My drivers side drl goes out randomly due to the wire position and my interior lamps go out intermittently

@@Realistick really? I've had no issues with mine in that regard. I did swap out the DRLs for Sylvania LEDs as it felt pretty awkward having dingy cheap day time lights and fancy HIDs for night lights. I think I can recall the roof interior light going out on my mom's 2009 a while back.

At first it was a little concerning seeing you standing next to the car. I'm 6'2" and a family friend wants to sell me his Outlander at a great price but I'm used to having very little head clearance in cars or not being able to wear my long hair up in a bun. Ah yes, the outlander is tall people friendly! The only thing that is less than ideal for me was how the steering wheel didn't come out any further since it only tilts.

Thanks, if you need the most reliable car, if the Rav4 has the 2.5L or 3.5L then I would go with that. The outlander will handle better, the 3.0l v6 makes it more fun too and the awd system is better but I would definitely go Rav4 if it is the same price and we are comparing 4 cyl to 4 cyl.

From what ive read on consumer reports, reliability wasn't an issue on either and there wasn't a big change in the overall package between those years. The v6 got a higher compression, the awd for the v6 got better, and the front got a facelift but that was about it for big stuff Now individual features might have changed, they all got Bluetooth i believe but not so sure about bt audio? Old reviews of the 07-09 model showed that people still thought it was a fun, reliable and a bit unrefined so I would recommend any 2nd gen model really, especially the v6!

Did you say "accommodable"? I absolutely loved my 2011 Outlander V6 XLS with navigation and the Rockford Fosgate stereo. The seats were SUPER comfortable, not sure what you're talking about there. BUT at 115,000KM (I dunno what that is in miles, maybe around 70K?) the transmission started slipping out of gear randomly and it was also clunking in and out of gear constantly whenever you were stopped at a light. So, upon the advice of a trusted transmission mechanic, I traded it in, much to my dismay. I expected to keep this beloved SUV a LOT longer... now I have a car payment again, long before I wanted to. :(

Seat comfort can vary from person to person, I've definitely got used to them but still can't call them comfortable for myself, most people agree with me who have sat in the front seats, but not all. I will say, was it doing it when it was cold? Because at stoplights, the v6 transmission was actually designed to come out of gear and into neutral to save gas. I ended up buying this one a few weeks after I did this review and it has always done what you described but it's never had any actual problems, and when it isn't cold, it's fine usually.

@@Realistick No, not cold. In fact, it only usually did it when it was warmed up. And according to the mechanics at the dealership it's not designed to come out of gear at stop lights at all (not that they can't be mistaken). EIther way, I lived with that for a long time, but when it literally started falling out of gear and revving all to hell while driving down the road is when I really started taking the transmission issue more seriously. The transmission for the V6 is notoriously impossible to get parts for and very expensive to fix. Hence my decision to get rid of it. I wasn't willing to take the risk of facing a repair bill equal to the value of the vehicle when I could just trade it in for a new one now. Doesn't sound like a very common problem, but that was my unfortunate experience, nonetheless.

Generally curiously, did you upkeep with drains out CVT fluid for new fluid every 40k? And replaces two CVT filters? I have same model as your, rolling at 180k currently. When I took my Outlander in for CVT service 1st time under my name at 70k, I asked for filters to be replaced. They flat out lied me that they're sealed and not serviceable. It's a total BS. Lost my business with them.

227,500km had to change the gas tank because it was badly rusted (live in eastern canada) the fuel pumps are crazy expensive in canada $2,500 luckly was able to buy a used one for $150 other then that super reliable

Fair warning. I own a 2011 GT. Engine, transmission, transfercase and differential are flawless. The rest of the car is falling apart from rust. Avoid a used model if you live above the rust line. The main issue with the Outlander is lack of quality parts. As it ages, the front control arms will give out. Generally you'll find this out during an inspection or wheel alignment. Since you wont have time to wait on a pair of OEM arms from the internet (since there seems to only be a mitsubishi dealer every 500-1000 miles), the shop will only be able to purchase the lower quality aftermarket parts that all fail within a year of install (seriously, regardless of brand all the aftermarket arms fail in a year.)

Also, on the subject of rust, theres a metal coolant line that hangs off the bottom of the transmission accessible from the driver side wheel well. It will rust out right at one of the clamps. Mitsubishi doesnt make the part anymore so you'll have to rig up some 5/8" rubber coolant line to make it work.

I'd say the 4 cylinder in this case. If you're driving that much, you will save on gas and the newer model is a little quieter. The v6, previous gen model is much more fun and quirky though! You won't regret either one imo, the v6 is nice on the highway and still gets reasonable gas mileage, but the 2011 has less insulation and is not as comfy as the newer ones. Best of luck!

Small electrical things, make sure all of the lights, windows work. Check out a lot of the interior trim as well, they are cheap so those things sometimes break and that could get you a cheaper price. Other than that, pay close attention to the suspension and exhaust and it should be good. I'd really just recommend taking it to an independent mechanic before purchasing though. The v6 models also came with a weird transmission that puts itself into neutral to save gas and that can feel slightly clunky, especially when cold, just a heads up there.

@@brucevanguard8398 I'd be pretty cautious. If it is well taken care of, it can last 300k miles, but if it is a 4 cylinder, be cautious of the transmission. And get it inspected, the last thing you want is a 3k car that becomes a 5500 dollar car after it needs a full suspension rebuild, AC, and electrical work. It's worth the 70 or 80 dollars!

Dude I had a Outlander 2009 AWC, and my new car is outlander 2019 AWC different color same everything else really... Everything said. ( ours in Canada come with CVT and 2.4L 170hp mivec engine default or 3.0L V6 mivec with automatic 6 speed optional) no standard gearbox. 2.4L is what i got and it's enough feels good, also fuel economy is legendary Also since 2019 they're all AWC and 2020's and all S-AWC nothing else. (because we live in snowland) Oh yeah and the 2019 interior is alot better and so is the sound proofing of the overall vehicule. Oh yeah #2 and Andriod auto + Apple car, reverse cam, automatic heating is standard... so is A/C and heated seats... I could go on

The powertrains in these are really strong but they have some questionable areas. Be sure to see the car when it is clean so you can really check the paint. The third rows tend to get torn up so check that out too, they usually shake a little bit but you’re going to want to make sure it's still safe. I ended up buying the one you saw in this video (not planned) and I have only had issues with it making noises from the third row and the steering wheel (a screw needed locktight). The body hardware inside and out would probably be what i would look closest at. With a higher mileage car like that, get it inspected at a local mechanics shop, you will appreciate the $50 it might cost! The engine and trans should be good but there are a ton of moving parts, especially with AWD so get it inspected. I definitely recommend this after 9 months of ownership, I wish I got one with awd

Why is it that in the USA, cars with *diesel engines* are *IGNORED..?* What's more, cars with *manual transmissions* are also *IGNORED..?* Happily in Europe, there ARE *manual transmission cars,* ALSO with *diesel engines* - such as a the 170 BPH 2.2 Litre diesel, with variable valve timing for great economy. ? I wish we had more manuals and diesels too but I've never driven an outlander with either of those, nor have I ever seen one. They might exist but if I tried talking about one I could very easily say something wrong. If you want to hear about those powertrains, be more specific in your search and you will get those results. I never hear Europeans talk about the American powertrains for this reason too. I'd love to have those cars here but we are never going to see them so I am not going to make my reviews any longer to potentially say something wrong about a powertrain I know nothing about (and have no clue on its availability too)

I cared ... cuz I have one 👊🏻😬👍🏻💯🙏🌏🤍 Mine is an 2009 and I have SatNav / Reverse Camera / Parking Senors / Heated Seats / Leather Interior / Rockford Sound System with factory fitted SUB WOOFER / 2WD-4WD-AWL Drive used in the exceptional EVO-8 / Trunk spliter for extra flex and COULD, at a push, seat 7 ... 2.0L Di ... drinks fuel a touch more than one would like, and the chasis is super-stiff, although, as a package, it extra premium. All the doors THUD correctly, and it's super-tight.
