I have had a 2014 for 5 years with over 150k miles on it and was looking to replace it but getting another Forrester wasnt even in the picture. My 14 was not a comfortable car to drive on road trips and the oil consumption issue always bothered me, so I started looking at the Outback. But I saw the new Wilderness at the dealer a couple weeks ago that was available to purchase, drove it and loved it. This isnt close to my 2014 and much better than the standard 2022 Forester models. I love it so far, hopefully all the issues I had with the 2014 ( oil consumption, transmission, cv axles, control arm bushings) will not be an issue. Im glad I bought it!

Good honest overall review on the Forester Wilderness. Picked up a granite grey Wilderness with HK/Nav last month $2K below MSRP which made it sweeter. Nearly every review says the same thing about the acceleration but I have no complaints. It was never designed to be a fast vehicle but I had no issues merging or jockeying for position on the road during my daily commute to work. More power is always welcomed but thats not why I bought the Wilderness. Light to medium trail duty with X-mode with decent mpg sealed the deal.

I am waiting for my Geyser Blue to be delivered in a couple weeks (oddly at the dealership you borrowed this one from I think) I’ve been watching a lot of Forester reviews in the meantime and this was one of the most detailed and informative. Really enjoyed it and am now even more impatient to get mine!

I hope you’re loving your Geyser Blue Forester Wilderness yet 1 year later. I’m very interested in same and same color. Is it much noisy at highway speeds ? 27 mpg’s or so ? How are the seats in summer, sweaty ? Needs a ventilated pad ? Ok winter with seat heat on ? I’m a little concerned summer comfort in that seat material. Thanks.

Researched this car segment for the last 2 months, my findings, - 5th gen forester rated #1 in safety and readability over all others including RAV, trial hawk, honda and bronco. That said, it has been a long road for Subaru from the CVT tranny , oil consumption, head gasket issues of past generation vehicles. At 6'3, CR just announced the Forester is #1 with tall drivers as well, no surprise as the "green house" visibility is very attractive. All the safety dings can be disabled permanently, with the exception of engine on/off at stop. After market solution will solve that as well. So, I will be picking up my Subaru Forester Wilderness / pearl white next week. Comfortable driving on and off road, safety and readability, looks, honest service advisors that I have visited with during this time, all have pushed me this direction. And finally driving my daughters 2017 Forester premium, sold me on being a Subie owner. Suggested maintenance to ensure long life; 30k diff (F/R) service, 40k CVT Transmission service, and oil changes every 4k. Compared to the Outback, Off road analysis/videos show the turbo in the Outback gets totally in the way of performance when climbing, as the Forester's new gearing and software changes bring much more to the equation over the turbo, in my opinion. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHfCe6edf5yUgbM No rock climbing for me, but adventuring, all day long. HAPPY TRAILS

The exterior styling is great on the Forester Wilderness. I love it! I do like the analog gauges but I wish it had an analog fuel gauge. Another thing that’s missing is an available tow hitch (currently). SOA includes the increased tow capacity in their marketing for the Forester Wilderness, but how can we utilize that feature without any way to tow?! Just kinda strange to me…
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, they run out of weird things right now, hopefully they will have that here soon because I also don't see it on the website. Since it has the oil cooler already, it should probably be good to tow with an aftermarket hitch but then the warranty won't like that as much. I'm sure it will pop up here soon but I will note this in my regular Forester review coming up!
@acsnyder
@acsnyder 2 жыл бұрын
@@Realistick Oh, it definitely is capable of towing the advertised 3k lbs, and like you said, it’s due to the added engine component cooling they’ve added to mitigate heat caused by the stressors that come with towing. No aftermarket tow kits are available from what I can tell. Plus I’d much rather go with an OEM for both the looks of it and for the warranty considerations. Aftermarket and even OEM tow hitches will likely negatively affect the departure angles, too, but the OEM is less likely to be a problem because of how well it appears to integrate into the bumper. I know at least one of the geyser blue pre-production/test vehicles had one installed, and it looked really nice! Go check out the Driving Sports TV’s first look videos. It shows the tow hitch installed, somewhere around the 1 min mark, I think. 😎👍🏻
@greggh8611
@greggh8611 2 жыл бұрын
@@acsnyder I talked directly to SOA about this issue, since I'm getting a Wilderness soon and want to put a bike hitch on it. They said that an OEM one is not available yet. There is no info as to when it will be. But a rumour on Reddit says sometime in March? The problem with aftermarket hitches is they eat into your ground clearance - probably not something you want if you have a Wilderness. The OEM hitch kits notch out the back bumper for the receiver and the rest is tucked up high. Unfortunately, if you want an OEM one, we'll have to wait. Sucks for mountain bikers!

If they discount $3K, then maybe. My local dealer seems to have quite a few, probably because of that sticker shock....and no real leather!

Since I HATE the gloomy grey or death black interior colors, I opted to order a Crimson Red touring with brown leather interior. I’ll install a 1 inch lift, full under body skid plates, 3 inch Borla dual exhaust, K&N cold air intake, (increasing the hp, torque and mpg), and replace the factory tires with Falken Wildpeaks. I’m thinking about adding an additional oil and transmission cooler.

Good review as usual. But it's crazy that this most "outdoorsy" trim doesn't get heated rear seats or a heated steering wheel, even as options, while in Canada they're both standard... NY, New England, Michigan, Montana etc etc - all big Subaru areas - are just as cold as southern Canada. Really it's another example of Subaru stripping down features for the US market, their biggest. Obviously not a big deal for most buyers, but I've promised myself my next car is going to have a heated steering wheel, I've wanted one forever, so this Wilderness is off my list. Sucks because I like it so much otherwise.

4:31 yeah those tires look ridiculous for the size/lift of this vehicle. The Wilderness Package does look way better in the Forester though. The Outback just looks like a lifted station wagon. I wish they had given the Forester the more powerful engine they put on the Outback.
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely looks like it skipped leg day, but if they did bigger tires the gas mileage would tank even more so it was good for Subaru to leave that one up to the owners. A turbo model would have been sweet to see too but she gets the job done!

I honestly love the look of this front end. The rear could use some tweaking. The black panel between the headlights makes it seem kind of cheap/dinky, just imo. If i got this I would try to replace that panel with the body colour, or wrap it. They also should have tinted the white part of the rear tailights like the crosstreks have. And get a black exhaust tip.

For the price, the Outback Wilderness seems like a much better platform. If you can afford another $60/month or so it gets nearly twice the torque at half the rpm with it's turbo engine. A lot more power, nearly the same gas mileage. There really isn't any reason to get those over the outback other than looks. If you can afford one you can afford the other or you probably shouldn't be buying a new car if your budget is that tight.
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 жыл бұрын
To some people, the extra 4 grand is too much (the same goes for regular Outback v Forester conversations too). I'd personally take the Outback Wilderness too, but I very much see the argument for Forester Wilderness too. Outside of affordability, long term dependability on the far more simple power plant of the Forester is am upside (if you don't mind the power), this has better angles for offroad and is more practical for that purpose all around, they have completely different driving positions with the Forester feeling more SUV like with better visibility. I might do a video comparing the two when I get the chance!

Subaru Lies about the mpg. Figure on getting 3-5 mpg less on the freeway and 1-2 less city driving

@@Realistick our Outback with the 2.5 naturally aspirated engine only gets 28-29 mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75 mph. Even when we’re driving only 65 mph, it still only gets 29 mpg. If we would have known that, we would have bought a Toyota Venza or a Rav AWD

@@Doc1855Is that based off of tank mpg or the car's own reading? Also, elevation, temperature, humidity, wind have effects on it, as does speed, I'm surprised you don't see an improvement at 65 mpg. Ive never run into that problem and my parent's 21 Crosstrek exceeds the rating notably if I'm easy on it. There might something off with your specific car or another external factor?

@@Realistick I go by how many miles are driven to the amount of fuel consumed. We have neighbors who own a Crosstrek and they higher mpg than is rated. On our Outback we never get above 29 on the freeway. Our mpg does go down to 24-25 mpg while driving on MT freeways with the cruise set on 85 mph. We have a 11 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4X4 with a 4 liter V6 and we constantly get 24-25 mpg on the freeway in MT with the cruise set on 85, but I’ve installed a K&N intake and a 3 inch FlowMaster exhaust. I’m sure those 2 mods have helped bc before the mods, we only got 19 mpg on the freeway

$36K and you only get 182 horsepower. Laughable. I got a fully loaded 2021 WRX for $31K and that thing has 268 horsepower and a lot of torque.

Haha and for 5 grand more you could have gotten a Mustang GT with 460 horsepower. Also, maybe that's why Subaru built the WRX? And they built this for people that care about Off road prowess and practicality. What's laughable is comparing the engine specs of a WRX and a small SUV, or comparing the engine specs of a Mustang GT and WRX for that matter ;) congrats on the WRX though, the last gen was a blast!

@@firstnamelastname3558 I don't think you understand that I was making a joke by mentioning the Mustang, as it doesn't compete with a wrx, like the Forester doesn't compete with the WRX. 90 percent of the cars in the class have similar figures and comparing the engine specs between a sports sedan and a family suv is nonsensical. ₜₕₐₙₖ ᵧₒᵤ

Losing 5 mpg was the killer. We don't really go offroad since we have an old 4Runner for that. That 5 mpg adds up on longer trips.
