I’ve had many a truck and off-road vehicles in my life (and currently) and I’ve had a 17 forester as my daily commuter. Sure it’s not perfect (cvt is the Achilles heel) but man this thing was so freaking capable on ice and snow, as well as some mild off roading. I honestly wish it came with a manual or automatic and if they put in a transfer case into this thing - I’d buy it for sure.

The gearing isnt changed much in terms of the trans, what they did was put the beefy differential from the ascent, onto the wilderness trims, which not only makes the differentials stronger, but lowers the ratio from 3.90 to 4.44, which is where the main fuel economy hit comes from. the cvt is also beefed up a bit but the ratios don't change. 3.90 to 4.44 would be about a 10% increase in rpms once you max out the CVT's overdrive ratio which will hit your fuel economy hard.

I have an OB Wilderness, and it is truly a multipurpose vehicle. A great highway cruiser, family hauler and excellent off road. I'm not talking dirt roads either. I've taken mine on a deeply rutted trail in the winter, through snow, ice mud and rocks. I did put a significant dent in the front skid plate because of the less than ideal approach angle but aside from that it was great. Yes the looks are controversial, but the cladding does serve a real purpose by redirecting mud and water away from the car. We get 30-50cm of snow regularly where we live and I've found I can get in and out of my driveway no problem even after the plow has come by and blocked in everyone else. If you don't need a rock crawler, this car will do 80-90% of what a Jeep or 4Runner will do without compromising on-road performance outside of a slight MPG hit. I 'd even say that I think you will see a greater proportion of Wilderness Edition Subarus on trails or snowy dirt roads than you will see Jeeps or 4Runners.

I think all Subaru’s sharing this platform behave similarly. My main complaint is the CVT transmission, really uninspiring, but I think necessary to keep fuel consumption acceptable offsetting the permanent 4x4 traction and flat engine. I personally love my Crosstrek and find them very well balanced. What it lacks in sophistication it makes up in reliability, practicality and most importantly all weather drivability.

I drive a 2015 Forrester. Honestly, I didn't really think much of the CVT, good or bad, until I started watching Savageese. Yeah, if you are trying to burn the wheels from a dead stop, I agree it's crap, but for normal driving, it accelerates fine.

Just to put subarus AWD system in perspective. I own a 2011 legacy 3.6r. There was a pretty decent snow storm a month and a half ago where i live. Driving to work on a 2 lane highway and traffic is at a stand still due to sedans and tracter trailers are as well. So me in my sedan go in the shallow V shapped median with drifts of at least 8inches and make it past all these people that are stuck in the road. I have gotten through snow that pilots and other big suvs are getting stuck in. Ill take the hit in mpg, subaru is the king of inexpensive cars that destroy snow.

The visibility, trunk and features inside are great. It's not perfect and I'd love to go for a trip with Subaru interior designer and complain all day about every little detail, but the truth is I'd still choose is over the competition. Subaru needs to do something about both the coarse engines and the CVT. They're so old they've debugged them, but they just aren't good to drive. The engine's configuration will likely make the NVH hard to solve (Porsche does better). The problem is that, like Mazda, they're a small automaker, so once they have a transmission or engine in production, it's hard to pay to replace it.
@markmiller3279
@markmiller3279 2 жыл бұрын
@@luljk2740 Maybe, though the RAV4 isn't especially wonderful, either. The rear seat is kind of cramped, and the faux-outdoorsy design is about as bad as the Subie. The hybrid is the most attractive RAV4, and that is pretty nice. I prefer the Venza for its sleeker styling and nicer interior. It isn't trying to look rugged, and that's a good thing, as it isn't. If I had to drive bad roads with mud and snow, this Wilderness Forester might be the better option, as it's better than Jeep's competitors.

I have a '14 2.5 manual, and it's pretty good, but also pretty similar in layout to the new model. It's too bad the manual was discontinued - I feel like the Wilderness trims are the ones that could justify that transmission since it's more predictable than the CVT. It would be especially great if they offered one with a crawler gear like the 4WD Tercels or the new Bronco. My biggest complaints are the undefeatable traction control (the off button only reduces intervention) and how it throws me around over bumps (this is a trait of all SUVs - I'm comparing to cars where the lower seat height makes the side-to-side movements less pronounced).

@major wow, it's better, but still not great. I've been driving manual since 2005, but feel like I'm learning all over again because of how inconsistent the electronic throttle is. I stall this car regularly, but rarely did with my other cars (Vibe, Elantra, Accord, Tucson, Metro, among others), probably because they were all cable throttles.

@major wow How are you spinning wheels in bad weather with a Forester? You might want to look at your tires. I have a 15 Forester XT and I don't even spin wheels in bad weather. I've got a 2013 XT. I think the last year of the turbo for a Forester and it has a mechanical auto transmission in it. I've blown out all the bushings doing 60MPH over logging roads, getting air with it. I've put rally wheels and LT tires on it and uprated the suspension with King's springs and Bilsteins on it. I drive the snot out of it and have loved the car. I just put a full new exhaust on it because the factory one was rotted out. I'm going to drive this until the wheels fall off of it. I just got a loaner of the new model. The CVT is greatly improved from the last gen, but I still hate it and the thing that was just heartbreaking is the stupid driving assist nonsense. If you push a corner to apex it, it starts to turn in automatically and you have to fight it to hold the line you want. The entire time you drive on a twisty road it's fighting the right lines through the corners. The motor is wheezing along compared to my XT, it has no nuts and particularly so if you want to pass at 70mph, there's nothing left to it. I'm 6'5" and it's roomy, has awesome visibility for road trips. It's a great compromise of small size but plenty of cargo space and my 2013 has been quite reliable for me over the years. I just wish Subaru would bring the turbo back, a ZF 8spd and leave the driving to the driver. I'm pretty sure mine will be the last Subaru I ever own and it's a shame.

Mark in the croc hat. Literally almost fell out of the chair laughing! Nice touch.! Yeah, Subaru does a lot of things right - still manual controls for HVAC, great greenhouse, and the AWD system. Their drivetrains are falling further behind and their limited offerings (you can get the turbo in the Outback, but not the Forester) are perplexing. I have a '14 XT (2.0 L twin scroll turbo) and it has been great, but the 2.5L naturally aspirated is neither efficient or powerful enough to justify in this modern era. I don't know what the towing capacity is on this Wilderness version, but this is something that needs to be beefed up too.

I can totally see why a lot of people don't like the new look and especially the plastic cladding but me personally? This is the first modern Subaru that I've liked the look of. I think Subaru's, even their performance vehicles, are pretty boring to look at. This one with its color accents and aggressively styling have me feeling some kind of way. Maybe that says more about me than it does about the car. I do agree as some others have said that a more sophisticated drive train in addition to the wilderness aesthetic and badging would have really made this a standout option for anyone serious about taking these things into the woods. If those panels are truly easily replaceable without some major work needing to be done, I think that could be great to keep you out of insurance claims and the body shop, too.

The transfer case would have to be redesigned. It's more complicated than just the CVT, especially that people expect eight gears. Subaru's AWD is very specific and only comparable to Audi Quattro in many regards. There will be a solution similar to a Prius breadbox. They already have it. I'd assume next gen cars would have that or better implementation of e-boxer.

@@valdius85 We know Subaru had standard auto trans in their cars in the past with great results on the AWD side of things. . Look, we have a Crosstrek in the family and love it. The CVT is not a showstopper for day to day driving. It is annoying sometimes, but not a show stopper. . I'm just curious to understand how much the CVT impacts product market fit, improve gas mileage, etc, considering every single publication complains about it. It is unanimous.

@@nelsonricciardi7087 They had, but they were all type with less gears. This is why I wrote that the modern standard is 8 gears, minimum 6. That is bit so will cause problems. It is doable, Audi Quattro is similar in design. But then it would not be affordable and less space for passengers. It like torque converter AT as well, but I'm not sure I'm willing to pay the price for it :)

Increased ground clearance, improved approach and departure angles, transmission oil cooler, a reprogrammed CVT with lower "1st gear" ratio for improved slow speed crawling, Xmode that continues to operate at higher speeds, a roof rail system that can handle up to 800 lbs of stuff (200 when moving), all terrain tires, smaller wheels. These are meaningful changes to yes, an already capable vehicle. Does Nick's friend "need" all that stuff? Who knows. Maybe he just likes the way it looks? Who cares? After having both the forester and outback for over a year (unless the wilderness upgrade drastically changes their character), I would say hands down spend the extra on the outback. It feels like it costs twice as much if you do a lot of highway driving. My wife likes the height of the forester. I hate having to constantly correct the steering angle to keep it straight on the highway compared to the outback, yes I've had alignment checked. Add in the better fuel economy, quieter ride, longer wheelbase, almost identical stowage capacity-IDK why she wanted the ester...

Researched this car segment for the last 2 months, my findings, - 5th gen forester rated #1 in safety and readability over all others including RAV, trial hawk, honda and bronco sport. That said, it has been a long road for Subaru from the CVT tranny , oil consumption, head gasket issues of past generation vehicles. At 6'3, CR just announced the Forester is #1 with tall drivers as well, no surprise as the "green house" visibility is very attractive. All the safety dings can be disabled permanently, with the exception of engine on/off at stop. After market solution will solve that as well. So, I will be picking up my Subaru Forester Wilderness / pearl white next week. Comfortable driving on and off road, safety and readability, looks, honest service advisors that I have visited with during this time, all have pushed me this direction. And finally driving my daughters 2017 Forester premium, sold me on being a Subie owner. Suggested maintenance to ensure long life; 30k diff (F/R) service, 40k CVT Transmission service, and oil changes every 4k. Compared to the Outback, Off road analysis/videos show the turbo in the Outback gets totally in the way of performance when climbing, as the Forester's new gearing and software changes bring much more to the equation over the turbo, in my opinion. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHfCe6edf5yUgbM HAPPY TRAILS but MIN ROCK CLIMBING for this cowboy. 🙂

I am with Mark, this engine feels plenty quick. I'm getting tired of so called enthusiasts expecting every goddamn vehicle to do 0-60 in 5 seconds. This is an adventure SUV, not a sports car. Could it use a bit more oomph? Maybe, but it's perfectly fine with this powertrain setup. Also, fuel economy is a priority for me, so I would probably skip the Wilderness and go with the Sport, for the additional 3-5 MPGs...and better looks. The Wilderness is definitely a solid value, though.

The way this thing handles in the snow, is entirely due to the tires. The Ziexs on all other 18" equipped models are unimpressive and will plow like no tomorrow. I threw Wildpeak ATs on my old 19 Forester and it turned it into an absolute tank in the snow. I did sacrifice a few MPG, but the surefootedness, and decreased road noise were absolutely worth it. With this being a mid cycle refresh.. I'm excited to see what's coming for the 2024 model year. The white, while I like it does not help the front styling, and that's something I've griped about with the 2022 refresh.. the random bit of painted area between the lamps and grille that is almost entirely disconnected from any other painted area (especially on the Wilderness) annoys the hell outta me; Other trims that get less cladding have paint under the grill to connect each side, making it a little more cohesive. I wish it was slightly wider, and that Subaru would have relocated the cup holders/given more space under the climate settings.
