Africa is a continent and Spain is a country. Ceuta and Melilla were Spanish before Morocco existed as a country. In 711, Ceuta and Melilla are part of the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo. And Morocco are divided tribes

In Europe, Belgium and the Netherlands have some weird stuff too like Dutch enclaves within Belgian enclaves (counter-enclaves). Generally, Belgium borders with its neighbor are a mess with a lot of enclaves/exclaves. The pretty large Constance lake (3rd largest in Europe) is the border the border of Austria, Switzerland and Germany but nobody ever bothered to determine in which country you are when you are in the lake. Switzerland says the border is in the middle, Austria says its a condominium (the lake is the 3 countries territory), Germany is silent. There are a lot of enclaves/exclaves in/out of Germany and Switzerland also with other neighbors (France, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands). The UK presence in Cyprus where an British overseas territory on Cyprus has an electric plant in it that is on Cyprus territory is pretty insolite too. The Croatian/Serbian border is still problematic and can be seen with Liberland claiming its sovereignty and the Croatian police intervene on the Danube to remove those people as Serbia is enclined to encourage Liberland existence. Generally, borders dispute in the Balkan are frequent and unsolved to this day. (Bosnia, Slovenia, Serbia, Kosovo).

The video grossly and wrongly identifies the historical background of those two cities. Ceuta and Melilla can't be 'returned' to Morocco because those territories are Spanish since before Morocco exists. It would be as silly as claiming that most of current Spain should be 'returned' to the Italians because one upon a time an empire located in that peninsula ruled over Iberia. In addition the cities were part of the Visigoth kingdom, which predates the Arabic and moorish invasions. Following the logic of 'returning' stuff, if those two cities were now part of Morocco, there should then be a video claiming that they'd need to be returned to Spain, home of the Visigothic kingdom

Guys, I am from Ceuta. Most of the population here is Moroccian (Almost 80% percent) and almost everyone here prefer it to remain spanish. The big deal is that being this way, moroccians have the chance to have their sons born in the EU, in case they want to migrate to spain or any other country in Europe. And historycally speaking, Ceuta is the ONLY city in the whole of Spain which was given the opportunity to choose being spanish or not (Long ago), and we chose Spain. So, lots of people here talking about what should be the right thing to do around here... having no idea. If you ever go to Morocco (which is one of the coolest countries ever), pass by Ceuta for a little. It's really awesome here :) Hugs.

Daniel Moriarty what do you think about Gibraltar being British?. It's a very similar position to what you have in Ceuta. The Spanish want Gibraltar back even thow they have similar bigger territories in North Africa. The people in Gibraltar are of 95% Spanish origin, and have also had a referendum, and they voted 99% to remain British. I find it very strange and double standard of how Spain wants Gibraltar back, but is unwilling to give up its territories in North Africa or share sovereignty, even if that was against the will of the people of Ceuta and the others, but yet they expect at the very least shared sovereignty with Gibraltar, it's a bit hypocritical of Spain and have no moral authority on this issue.

You can't compare because historically ceuta and melilla (and much more in tjat coast) were part of spanish mainland even being a see beetwen those two lands (in the same way USA is still being USA at both sides of the 3 graeat lakes or florida).that IS BECAUSE Spain african mainland existed MUCH BEFORE the creation of Moroco, so in this case is not a "giving back aland to a country" as would be in the case of Gibraltar....here is no one to give somerhing back because was always spanish...would be a gift...what is not acceptable politically, hiatoricallyand culturally, in the same way that you cant divide Greece in several countries just because the mainland is aeparated by the Egeius Sea. Those lands in africa where to ensure and protect the merchant ship dlow of all europe through this small point from african bereberian piracy. Those pirates where the only inhabitants of this land beforethe creation of a properly country as is Moroco. And we are talking about centuries and centuries

You should have mentioned that Ceuta was conquered in 1415 by Portugal on an attempt to control the flow of riches from the caravans that traveled from the East. And so remained until Portugal had a Spanish born king. In 1640, when the independence was guaranteed, only Ceuta did not proclaim the Portuguese king as his own, showing intention to remain under Spanish rule.

Im from spain, I can give info: The two cities that are in africa but are part of spain are called (in spanish) Ceuta and Melilla, and there are some islands that are far from spain, Canary Islands, and they cant appear in the map, so they are ussually in a square at the down left corner, that tiny part of water that separes Morrocco from Spain is called (again, in spanish) "Estrecho de Gibraltar" Did you know that Eiffel Tower was going to be in Barcelona and not in paris? I guess thats why Spain is the 2nd country with more tourists, because FRANCE is the first one, for many people France is Spain enemie, but I dont want any war to start soooo.... Maybe the best is to end this comment But.... i have to say this: I never travelled to morrocco, I only travelled to Portugal (I always wanted to travel to London) and there are litterally some towns further away from my city than Portugal is LOL

You forget to mention that when Spain kicked the moors out in 1492 and formed Ceuta and Melilla there was no Morroco, it did not exist yet, that came afterwards. The reason we still have that territory is because it would be a staging ground for another Islamic invastion. The reason Spain does not have muslim issues like France, Germany, Sweden, etc.. is because of these territories and that is the way it will stay. Do not compare that situation with Gibraltar.

3:44 Gibraltar remains in the Schengen area. That means that an EU citizen can cross the border between Spain and Gibraltar with an identity card. In most European countries you have to have an identity card with you. However, between the EU and the UK you need a passport and other documents. Interesting, Gibraltar remains freely accessible for citizens of the UK. The same should be done with Northern Ireland, where the EU and GB have the second land border.

Llívia was not excluded from the treaty for the reason that you say in the vid, it is excluded because the treaty said that all towns and citys would be part of France, but Llívia is different, it is a thing that in Spain we call Villa, which is not the same, and as the treaty did not include this it remained as Spain. What about Angola, Mozambique and Guiné Bissau. They were part of the Portuguese empire and are in Africa, also the savage islands and the Madeira archipelago both belong to Portugal and they are located on the african coast. yo yo the scramble for africa happened later and Spain wasn't a major power by then. Portugal created coastal colonies along the west African coast shortly after and the slave trade would begin around this time too, but none of that really had anything to do with morroco. The moors controlled most of iberia throughout the middle ages and this was like a revenge thing for them. The kingdoms of castille and aragon merged to create "Spain", took granada, invaded morroco, started the inquisition, and sent Christopher Columbus out west all around the same time. The all out scramble by Europeans, which you're talking about, to take over the African continent wouldn't start for another 300 years

***** true. But "Spanish" wasn't really a thing before the creation of Spain either. I'm not trying to say it was justified, but there was definitely a feeling of righteousness and animosity towards the moors as they conquered Iberia and pushed into Africa. This wasn't long after the crusades ended and the inquisition started to expel non christians from the peninsula

Man I wish Spain got to keep Spanish Morocco. Spain would have been on both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar, making a bored tunnel necessary enough to build to link western Europe with western Africa. Unfortunately, the proposed dam across the Straits of Gibraltar to protect the Mediterranean coastal countries from coastal flooding by sea level rise certainly will not be built. A floating bridge is possible. And whether a dam or floating bridge were built, an underwater tunnel at each end would allow ships to still cross through the Straits of Gibraltar.
