To be fair Farnese accepted the arrangement in order to get them a ship to sail for Elfhelm. Even though she knew that Roderick and Magnifico did this without the approval from their families, she went along with it anyway, isn’t that true? So Farnese sort of used Roderick in order to help her and her companions, so they both schemed to an extent wouldn’t you say? Besides Roderick wants to get to know Farnese as a person, he wants to win her love before marrying her for real. I think that the two of them would make a fine couple, besides Farnese knows that Guts only has eyes for Casca.

I never understood the hate against Roderick, I'm really thankful to know someone like him crossed paths with Guts and the others, he's litteraly the best person that could've appeared when they needed a boat. I agree, I think that Roderick has earned his own place in the world. The difference is that Roderick actually cares about his crew, and would never sacrifice them the way that Griffith did during the Eclipse. Griffith is too narcissistic to ever be satisfied with anything even though he’s gotten his own kingdom. Narcissists are never satisfied with their achievements, and they need constant adulation from others. Also, Roderick wants to help his people by opening up trade with others, he cares about his people. Whereas Griffith mainly wants a kingdom for his own selfish reasons.

Roderick is my favorite secondary protagonist. Dude is a proud chad whos bravery mixed with ignorance to the astral world makes him a priceless team member. Dude is a noble but is down to scrap no questions asked, and doesnt revere Guts to a point of fear like most. I agree, I really like Roderick, he’s a very down to earth guy. I like that Miura didn’t make him into the stereotypical self-entitled nobleman. He and Guts converse with each other like good friends, plus Roderick dove in the sea to save both Guts and Casca, how awesome is that? He also loves Farnese for who she is, and like you said he’s very supportive of her, he’s such a gentleman. I hope that Farnese will grow to like him as well, she should give him a chance at least.

"Roderick has never seen a demonic creature", I am not sure about this statement. Based on the info we have that he is a great captain, he has probably been to many places and seen many things. Since even Guts before the eclipse was able to experience magical things, I think it is reasonable to say that Rodrick saw and learnt about magic creatures and the astral world during his life and adventures. This would explain the fact that he is never really surprised with the things that happened since he met his waifu. Also, the implication that he survived through these experiences plus his ability as a captain plus his relationship with his subordinates, we could make the assumption that Roderick's talent is compared to Griffith's pre torture.

With him being out in the world like he was I’d be almost 100% certain that he’s seen some kind of supernatural/paranormal/mystical beings. I’m pretty sure that it’s not on the level as say Guts or someone like that but with all his time at sea he had to run across something. Even if it were something smaller than an elf. Or maybe even something bigger than a whale but just didn’t think of it that way. But also though when he saw those tigers he may not have known that they were magical. He maybe thought that they were just another type of beast from some other land. Remember they don’t know about the world like we do. They don’t have the internet and things like that where they can check things. They have to go by their own site or word of mouth.

He looked honorable and magnificent publicly but behind closed doors he was ruthless and scheming. We just don’t know but we haven’t had a backstory on him either

I think Roderick's purpose in the story (beyond his utility of ferrying our main characters around in his boat) is largely to add more wrinkles to Farnese's development. Nah. The most under appreciated character in Guts’ party as far as main characters is Azan. Roderick also has an underlying quality that was shown when talking to Manifico about marrying Farnese. He is in on a scheme but maybe his nobility isn’t compromised but he does have ambitions regarding the Iith and Vandimion families merging together. Good or bad? No one knows but he is a character who has shown courage and valor without being spiteful of anything on the journey

Even if I had the fighting skills I would not engage in close combat which requires muscle, speed,etc. The tiger overwhelms the strongest human already in all those. A demonic one would be overkill against even the strongest human fighter. Imma need an in depth analysis on Corkus and how underappreciated he is as a character. Yes I know hes an unlikable asshole, a coward, and a whiner BUT, he still sticks it out to the end. Hes on the front lines, hes whacking away enemies with sword, crossbows and spear. He questions the outcome but he sticks to it no matter what. I completely agree with you, I really like Roderick. Certainly it’s true that he agreed to marry Farnese partly in order to benefit both his land and their families. He also did it because he’s genuinely interested in her as a person, and he wants to get to know her, and win her affections before marrying her for real. One could argue that Roderick is a flat and boring character compared to the other characters of Berserk, as there is little conflict or development that can be done with him, but I would argue that the inclusion of Roderick is an important step in the development of not just Guts, but the rest of the crew as well. Considering how close he's seemingly gotten with Guts, he seems like one of his first real friends that hasn't tried to kill or capture him when they first met (Farnese and Serpico. Or Griffith and Casca for that matter) or annoyed him (Puck and Isidro). He is someone who is his equal, whom he can relax and bond with, and considering how long it's been since Guts has had someone like that in his life, it's probably something he needed. His relationship with Farnese is also really sweet, and might help her develop more as well. Few characters have grown as much as Farnese, but as we've seen, she does have feelings for Guts that conflicts with her loyalty towards Casca, and that could also stunt her independence. If the series had continued, I would imagine Roderick could help her development further, as he loves her independence and would cultivate it. So yeah, Roderick might "just" be a nice guy, but sometimes you really need someone like that.

I also think that he has a chance with Farnese, he also likes her for who she is, and he would never try to stop her independence. How tall would you say Guts is? I think he gets stretched out a bit after the berserker armor but originally I would say 6’0-6’2
