I think Rodrick is just trying to make the best of a bad situation. He's realized his entire family has several screws lose, but he realized he could take advantage of that. Rodrick knows that he and Greg are essentially forgotten by his parents, so he can take his stress out on Greg. His parents don't approve of his musical career, but he uses it to keep them away from him. When your parents go away and leave you alone, of course you're going to have a party, and he was responsible enough to not leave the house a total wreck. I think it's possible Rodrick noticed the way Manny uses social engineering to get what he wants, and Rodrick learned that he could exploit his parents as well to keep them from making his life hell. Overall I'd consider Rodrick very smart and cunning. He's aware of his situation but he's able to survive without losing his mind.

Let's not forget in DOAWK: Rodrick Rules, Rodrick wisely used Susan's "mom bucks" against her by buying a bunch of fake money from the board game Susan got the money from in the first place.
@mjdxp56883 жыл бұрын
I think that's a really interesting moment personally. In the book, Greg ends up playing the board game the money is from with Rowley, and he ends up taking it all and stashing it under his bed. He starts exchanging it slowly to not arouse suspicion, but when Rodrick ends up finding the money, he takes it all and tries to trade it all at once, which Susan immediately recognises as impossible. I think that shows just how little Rodrick thinks of his parents. He truly believes that his mother is dumb enough to give him a thousand dollars for his counterfeit Mom Bucks.
@kastov74u3 жыл бұрын
That was Greg, but he did lend rodrick some, and he used them all at once even though his mom hadn't given out that many at all. He's smart, but this isn't an example. More so, the opposite. He's the reason they got caught
@CinnPai3 жыл бұрын
@@kastov74u Honestly it wasn’t too much of a good plan and Rodrick did the morally right thing. Rodrick knew that the Mom Bucks situation was flawed if she could just pay them in fake money instead of having a normal allowance, leaving room for her to actually scam her own children out of money + a system where Greg or even Manny could just get fake money and ruin the system furthermore Cashing them all in at once busted a flawed system and made sure no one would be spoiled. If it didn’t work, they’d go back to normal money. If it did, he got a free payout. Rodrick COULD have just been dumb, but I like to interpret it as “this is not how the economy works mom”

@swiftlyaswiftie3 жыл бұрын
I'd argue that while yes it is manipulative it isn't 'bad' or unusual. Manipulative isn't always bad, if it was your high school persuasive piece would be considered 'bad' as you tend to use slightly manipulative tactics while persuading someone. I'm not excusing manipulation of course, however you can manipulate someone lightly without it being toxic or bad. The main factor of this is how frequent and how severe it is. Gaslighting someone to make them question their own memories or pressuring someone into something they don't want to do is bad Playing dumb to make your dad who doesn't pay attention to you or care to help you with your assignment isn't bad.

It can be traced to rodrick as why Greg treats rowley like that since your relationship with your siblings defines how you treat your peers. Most teenagers in books are mean bullies who break the rules and are defiant. I can only hope he wises up to the fact that his entire family is a toxic nightmare and he moves away, cuts contact, and becomes a rockstar. Also, who the hell names their kid "Rodrick?" Dude I used to see Jeff Kinney all the time. He used to live down the street from me and I went to his book store he opened like daily. He is super nice and also like 6'7. But the "old school" diary is actually a mostly true story lol. It was based off of Camp Bourndale, a camp in Plymouth MA, that they had us go to for yes, a while week with no parents as field trip and of course, it's exaggerated to small extent but I just thought it was a cool thing to share.

Manny is a physco and probably not even human considering he built an entire house at 3 and he is very smart. Greg is a narcissistic sociopath who enjoys taking advantage of people and doesn't have much empathy. Susan is a Karen. Frank is a horrible father with the temper of the hulk. But rodrick is just in a teen phase, and like you said, he'll eventually grow out of it.

Woke them up early in an hour their brain isn't familiar of activating and 2. Sound shocked enough to deliver the news.
