As easy as it is to just say 'Learn to drive.' I suspect things like this are incremental steps to proving self drive technologies to the mass market. We have lane keeping systems, adaptive cruise control, parallel park assist, collision avoidance, navigation systems, etc. The individual components are all gradually making their way into the market. It's only a matter of time before it all comes together and self drive becomes just another option group on the window sticker.

I think this feature is for weekend warriors, people that tow a boat or RV or other toys occasionally, anyone else, such as myself, who have thousands and thousands of hours logged hauling/towing wont be using it, and I highly doubt anyone using this system will be taking any of the 'skilled' peoples jobs.
@AtomicCactus9 жыл бұрын
One tendency when backing up a trailer is to not pay attention to the movements of the tow vehicle. I've seen people smash their vehicles against obstacles (poles, walls, trees, other vehicles) because they were solely fixated on the movement of their trailer. I think I can say that many non-professional drivers out there towing trailers should gain more experience before endangering the public. I've been an advocate for trailer towing endorsements on one's license for years. There are too many people on the road to be figuring out the dynamics of a trailer. While this system is cool and innovative, I think it may encourage drivers who are otherwise too inexperienced towing trailers to go out on the road with one. And make them prone to not be attentive to the movements of their tow vehicle while backing up. Also curious if this works for fifth wheel and gooseneck trailers, seeing how the checkered sticker must be visible by the backup camera.

I am a long haul driver and use my 2015 - PeterBuilt model 579 with its 16 foot sleeper. As part of the visibility package not only does it have side to side cameras but two more in the rear for backing up to hitch up. For another $4,800 I was able to also add their self reverse hitching system similar to what Ford is offering. I have been driving semi's for over 35 years now and the past 11 years have been long haul driving cross country. If you have ever tried backing up a tractor like mine you need a spotter to guide you back even using the 2 rear back up cameras because of rain or dirt on them. Now Before I purchased my new Pete I decided to give marriage another try after all I needed a full time spotter. Well my newly married Chimp used to be my spotter. But with this new reversing system I can stay in my PJ's in bed while my Chimp backs my rig up. Once she has done this the only thing left for me to do is hook the air lines up and toss my Chimp in the sleeper until I need to hitch up another load. Imagine a female Chimp with this system being able to stay in the cab where she stays out of the weather. Now I have been trying to teach her to drive forward but no dice and does she ever toss a fit over it. Imagine a Chimp can ever back and hitch a big rip up what will they think of next. Now of course this is all fiction but it proves a point even a Chimp should be able to back a trailer up. LOL way to go FORD".....

Well isn't that just special. Just what we need, another fricken job done by a computer so any brainless idiot can do it. So in order to use this I have to put stickers on the tongue of my trailer for the camera to pick up the motion. Right, like those will really stay on there long term. Honestly it isn't hard to back a trailer, I was doing it long before I had my license. I realize most people don't come from a farm background and are used to maneuvering equipment, but stuff like this just make me wonder somedays. The engineer in me says that's a pretty cool concept, but the practical farmer in my just screams why?! New trucks are way overpriced to start with and are full of unnecessary junk that is great in a Cadillac, but really has no reAson being in a truck. Honestly if you can't back your trailer, you don't have any business pulling it. Just like getting your drivers license, if you can't do the maneuverability, you can't pull it.
