My problem with not trying to max the invention tree, or going nuts with allies, is that not doing so can make Rome nearly impossible very quickly. Their population buff and unhappiness during war debuff is such a strong combination that I can only rarely beat them unless I rush them with allies, mercenaries, and morale boosts. It's been ages since I've played vanilla, though, only Invictus since it came out.

I agree from an optimal play point of view. Time becomes OP very quickly

No that’s how old Rome is when you start. It’s the date from the founding of the city 450 some years before game start

It starts at 304 BC, the 451 date is in Ab Urbe Condita, which was the Roman way of numbering years before Christianity

Hi. I had same issue trying to add general in nobody showing. Go to the Army (helmet) button on left hand side of screen. Go into Legion. Select your legion army, it will show empty picture for Commander. With a smaller window beside it, hit add there, and now you will have options of Men for Commander. You can add a few to this list just incase #1 dies.
