I do love Pathfinder 1e and 3.5, they're my two favorite systems, but they're absolutely not in the same category as 2eAD&D, I'll say they're older but if I'm talking about old school I am specifically referring to AD&D (both first and second edition), as well as the magenta box set and other forms of basic (I just called out magenta box specifically because that was the edition I've played)

You are behaving in crusades just like the AI. You're sieging a castle with a 10k army. In a neighbouring county enemy army of 500 soldiers resieges a castle you just sieged down. Instead of dividing your army to go and crush that Little enemy army and prevent them from retaking territory with zero risk for yourself, you just sit with the whole army sieging and the enemy retakes the castle and goes for other castles. Sad.

1. Who says 2nd Ed. AD&D isn't Old-School? 2. I would argue that at this point 3.5 IS Old-School. I wrote an essay on the topic about a year ago, which I posted on several forums and social media sites. That essay received a very large amount of positive feedback, and agreement. At one point, the TiKTok had over 500,000 likes (I've since deleted that account), so I'm not in the minority on this.

I know this is an old video, but can't help to comment on your strategy in crusades. I think the right thing to do is split the army into one small with siege engines and some 1.5k levies and the rest. Small one should siege and large one should wait to join battles that need tipping the scales in favor of crusaders. Otherwise it can last painfully long as each battle lost drains forces and lowers the score.

When I was 10 my grandparents gave me a copy of the Avalon Hill game "Gettysburg". Later that year, my parents gave me the Avalon Hill "Battle of the Bulge" game, I have been playing wargames ever since. My next game was the Avalon Hill classic "Midway". In High School I played 1/72 scale WWII tank battles using "Angriff" rules. I play board games, computer games (NOT first person shooter) and 1/285 scale WWII miniatures. I've also played Napoleonic, American Civl War and other periods. Sci-Fi and Fantasy do not interest me. I've played D & D and it didn't hook me at all. I am only interested in historical based games. Sometimes we recreate a battle to try for a realistic alternative outcome. Other games we just want a historic setting for the evenings entertainment. I will never face off against orcs. They are fictional. I will face off against M-36s, StuG-IIIs, the Imperial Guard, the Scots Greys, the IJN and Hancocks II Corps. They were all real.

Just started in France so I'll be rewatching these. Will try to leave a like on every video as by the looks of it I neglected that first time through. I'm doing a run as the de Carrouges dynasty. I've had to start in Anjou as Alencon was taken of course by William the Conqueror. Chartres was also out as it's Duchy level as well and I definitely needed to start this run as a Count and in a county that stays French after William's English adventure! Should be fun, I love starting with a more obscure figure. My Robert the Bruce playthrough was great but had of course more goals and constraints. Jean de Carrouges is a bit more of a blank slate so other than loyalty to the French throne I'm pretty free to make decisions based on the characters' personality. Will let you know how it goes!

Hi! After watching your playthrough I bought CK3 myself. I do not see the notification list where you have all possible actions listed (declare war/find ally/etc.) - the one that shows from the top button left of gold. Does it come from some expansion or how is it turned on?

Looking on all these buildings it seems on paper like they are completely not worth the expenditure. You need to invest a shitload of money that will repay itself (in gold) in a 100 years or so. To sweeten the deal you get a 'whopping' bonus of +5% on some random stat and +2% on some other. Seriously?

Two playthroughs in the British Isles, and they couldn't have been more different. First was my first playthrough of CK3, did the tutorial as Munster and just kept going. Didn't go for historical accuracy at all, more "alternative history", building Ireland into the dominant military and economic power in western Europe, by game's end the king of Ireland ruled all of Ireland, Wales and Scotland, and England was a vassal in all but name. Second playthrough went for historical accuracy as the house de Brus, beginning as Robert I a lowly Norman Earl in Annandale, finishing as Robert the Bruce Duke of Lothian (deviated from history a bit, but I figured if the king of Scotland had offered the real Robert III the Duchy of Lothian he probably wouldn't have said no!) and made a successful play for the Scottish throne. I actually enjoyed the Robert the Bruce game more, it was so interesting to balance loyalty to Scotland with the character's ambition and loyalty to his own house. I even tried my best to marry as each Robert Bruce had, ie choosing as accurately as possible rather than going for powerful alliances. What's amazing is that right around the time I got to the *actual* Robert the Bruce, England launched a war to take a Duchy in southern Scotland, so I actually got to war against England. It was like the game realised what I was doing...one of the reasons I love CK3!! Currently deciding on a third playthrough starting location, will probably use your guides to help me decide where!

1e and 2e are basically the same game, they are compatible, and they are compatible with BX (my preferred "old school") and BECMI. It wasn't until WOTC got hold of it that it suddenly became not what it was...For me, the most important aspect of "old school" is the fantasy literacy part, that is, having DMs and players that actually read fantasy (and watch fantasy movies) and take inspiration from it. I can immediately spot someone who doesn't read enough fantasy. They simply have no material to improvise NPCs (so they sound like different people, that use different words and expressions, etc.)...I agree that THACO is awful and not necessary, because you can achieve the same effect using ascending armor class with a lot less work, so the game flows better. We HATED the 1e tables for combat because they bogged the game down, but it really doesn't matter....One of the main differences of old school is that it is more procedural (especially the BX stuff). I ran a hex crawl once for a bunch of 5e players, and they had never seen anything like it. It's just a process where the turns have a sequence of steps (account for time, roll for random event, see if you get lost, etc.)...I also designed encounters that they could not possibly win, but I left ways to escape or solve the problem without combat. Nevertheless, they still tried to jump in the middle and just hack, but their 5e superheroes still couldn't win. They just needed to determine the objective and see the monsters as obstacles to get around rather than just punching bags to beat up. It's because they didn't know anything other than the 5e rules and how to manipulate them. (There was no such thing as Rules Lawyers and Min/Maxing and Murder Hobos in the 1980s D&D games. Those are WOTC inventions.)... I think Gavin Norman's "Dolmenwood" (a variant of Old School Essentials, I think it is the best rules and setting I have ever seen, based upon BX structure and fairy tale literature)...Forgotten Realms is sooooooo tired now that it would be better off to be truly forgotten...If you want to see quality old school game play, check out 3D6DTL's channel!!!! There is no better old school play on KZbin, in my opinion, to include Questing Beast as DM, (although his reviews are fantastic)! Most game play vids really bore me, and there are a lot of non-fantasy readers posing as DMs on these channels. Terrible.

Hi, hope u are well. I took a break from CK3 after my Robert the Bruce playthrough (which was insanely fun playing as a Duchy instead of a kingdom, brought a whole new level to the gameplay) & also because I'm on PS5 and Paradox essentially fired Lab42 who did the console port & brought on a new company going forward so I'm in wait & see mode right now as to the future of the game on console). Anyways rewatching GoT has inspired me to do a Steppe culture playthrough next as a break from Western Europe and because the Mongol empire aspect i hope will be very interesting!) Anyways I hope your channels and yourself are doing well.

This just seeems boring ngl. Way too realistic which wouldn't be a complaint but. The average guy wants to emulate a great king like Alexander napoleon or caesar thats why achievement hunters exist. Even medium level kings used to want to emulate great ones. Granted most kings lived a boring life managing bs because they were raised incompetent and lavish. but i dont wanna have to deal with petty politics 24/7 yes they should be there as an obstacle i need to get rid of in my way to glory. But not entirety of it. Would i have been a bitch who likes drama mroe than conquest if i was born into loyalty? Maybe. But let ys think we could be like Alexander

Hey RBG, sorry I'm late to the party but I thought you'd wound the channel up a while back so never thought to check back. Nice to see you are back (I hope); looking forward to your next CK3 run. They dropped a new patch yesterday, which should be the last one for a while (the next big DLC, Roads to Power, is probably late summer or September). Would be awesome to see you do another TIP II run if you're heading back to CK3, as you could check out the new Legends and plagues stuff etc. All the best man.
