Why can't they make a WW1 game where the default map isn't contained in a single screen from the Alps to the channel? There's not nearly enough detail you can't zoom in to individual battalion level units. It was 470 miles long. The map should represent every mile of it in detail.

So glad to find this video. C&C is not just my favorite fantasy game in the modern era, it has also been my only claim to game in the rpg world: I'm lucky enough to be a credited playtester in the PHB (though, idk if that is still true in the Reforged books lol)

I agree with everything you've said here. I wish the Monster Manual was a little less text dense. I also think they went overboard on Fey. I love Castles & Crusades and will be running it at GARYCON this year.

Another great video. From The Plantagenets by Dan Jones: "12th century French politics was violent, changeable and rough. The land was divided into loose and shifting territories that owed little or no allegiance to any central authority, ruled by noblemen who were little more than warlords." I think I've figured out why I love playing in France in CK3!

I played AD&D in the 80s. I DMed 4E and Pathfinder (2008 - 2014). Then I went back to Old School (Basic Fantasy, OSRIC, and my favorite Swords & Wizardry). Swords & Wizardry is great with many classes (assassin, ranger, druid..), 9 levels of magic-user spells, and only one number for all saving throws.

The best way to play HRE is diplomacy, just diplomacy, you wanna become the emperor, then diplomacy, you wanna keep your dynasty in power, diplomacy, you want more power, then diplomacy, it is that simple, for those that don't want the history lesson, which is very, very foolish.

There is no historical context past the start date of your game. Trying to achieve it would be like building a sand castle right next to the sea.

I really enjoyed old school DnD. I remember running a few games in second edition. I really didn't enjoy Pathfinder or newer DnD. I actually switched to GURPS for my games. GURPS is a very open system where any kind of a game or setting can be implemented. It allows a GM to create games with very different atmosphere. To be honest, after years in this hobby I started to understand that the system doesn't matter as much as your Game Master. A good GM can make a bad system and make it work, or write a story around the system, hiding its flaws. While a bad GM given the best system will not be able to run a good game to save their life. I am fortunate enough to have players that want to play in my games rather than players that want to play a specific system or setting.

Love it, looking forward to seeing the logical conclusion this reaches. I've missed your CK3 content. Other CK3 KZbinrs like Zieley and Ottawa are good but they're very much speedrunners/optimal playstyles which gets a bit old. You've got a real corner of the market with the deep role playing you do, i haven't seen many others and the few I've seen are pretty boring. I am so glad to see your CK3 content continuing!

Great to see you back. I just started your book recommendation of Dan Jones's The Plantaganets so absolutely love seeing that series continue. Having said that I'll watch any CK3 content you put up. The console version just got the Tours and Tournaments expansion so it's a great time for more CK3 content on KZbin, particularly from you! Hope all is well and looking forward to more RBG!

Ragnarssona þáttr (The Ragnar & Sons saga) kind of goes off script in regards to the typical Norse saga, which more usually involves unscrupulous family members who need to be overcome in order to regain one's birthright. CK3 as a story generator could easily be a saga generator (lots of Norse sagas are sagas of multiple generations of a family) if it was a bit tighter in regards to the Norse Lore.

Being norse is great way to spread your dynasty all over the world if you have strong norse spouses. They can launch their own adventures and have your children inherit lands all over the map. Great for renown farming.

Great video! I have a story: first time playing Wight Box, we run into a (randomly rolled) 4hd evil knight in all black-armor as our very first dungeon encounter. Our wizard fails to charm him so we run away. The next day, we return and he's still there, but this time the charm succeeds and we gain total control over him. We use him as our sword to brute force our way through that part of the dungeon, even sending him in first to tank trap damage. But once we're nearing the end of the day, we have to put him out of his misery because the spell will end if the wizard goes to sleep and then he would kill us all. My character, being chaotic good, decides to give him a warrior's death-instead of just executing him-by having a duel. We make the knight fully undress and lay down his weapons, so he will be first fighting a plate-armored fighter that is now wielding his +1 sword. The outcome? He hits three nat 20s in four rolls and sends my character to 0hp. The only reason I didn't die there and then was because the DM decided that since he was unarmed, his attacks were non-lethal (which is something he probably just did out of mercy for us since it was the first session). We decided that the knight had punched my character so hard that it'd caved his helmet in, cutting his face and leaving a nasty scar. We killed the evil knight less honorably afterwards, and my character became a lot less merciful.

Great comments! I started in college in 1980 with AD&D. I played until my first son was born. Now that I am nearing retirement, I looked at 5e, and I almost don't recognize it. I would love to find an AD&D group.

cool vid. I started with ADND 1e, left the hobby in the early nineties, came back in 2020, was a bit overwhelmed with the vastness of the hobby, and not too impressed with the latest pastel version of the OG game. so i wrote my own. Nothing as in depth as 5e, far less choices so game play moves quicker and combat is simpler. we like it. cheers

Having zero knowledge about D&D, it was still very interesting to listen :) Quick question... have you ever considered to make a video/stream from a session where you're a DM? Would it be even doable...?

I’ve considered it, but would need to a) have a group willing to be on camera and b) figure out the tech.

D&D was not my first rodeo... or even my 3rd. When I decided to run a game, it was the Red Box. I loved it. I loved the Blue box (I already told you why I had very little experience in playing AD&D). But I was pretty obsessive about reading and playing lots of other games, so I did not have the die hard loyalty to D&D like others (I just always wanted to have it in my life, even if I only played it every once in a while). I really did enjoy playing AD&D 2E with you, and wish we would had played more (and even play OSE). New D&D is a mixed bag for me. I don't really care that the game has changed a lot, but I wish someone who loved the game and respects it's history owned it, but that's never going to happen (unless Musk buys it out lol). And for anyone curious: DM's guild is really inexpensive PODs of the old books, which is great for when there are people who are running it, and you need a PHB or two. I just wish the 2E books had a hardback options. I still need to buy the D&D Cyclopedia one of these days!
