I agree except MK9 gameplay is still the best- run mechanic is bad, turns everyone into a rush down character, one button that breaks neutral in any fighting game is never good. NRS know this which is why it hasn't been included in since. MKX is fun because it still follows MK9 design except for the run button. Variations were also a mistake as Tom has said many times why cut a character into three pieces instead of a complete character? counter picking has no cure so dont even try. So run and variations are problems with MKX and the story was garbage. It was still fun though overall because the presentation, high power level,combo routes and roster.

MK1 seems to be geared towards kasual fans and edenian stans because they are the only ones who defend this game with their lives. It looks that way with the story and dumbed down gameplay, too. They had to make the cheapest game for the weakest of MK kommunity.

Ive been saying it since launch. Up Block is one of the worst mechanics ever introduced to fighting games period. There is nothing that up block doesnt do that push block and jump blocking wouldnt do but better and feel alot better too. The only reason to implement up block over those other 2 mechanics, is if you legitimately think you are smarter and better than previous fighting game devs who came up with objectively better mechanics. The biggest complaint about MK is how slow, clunky and stiff the game plays. Well Up Block does nothing to address those issues except it actually makes them worse. Up Block makes an already slow and clunky game feel even slower and even more clunky.

MK doesn’t have anti air invulnerability like DP in SF, so upblock allows player to play a neutral based fighting game instead of jumping feast. In Mk11, everyone jump kick if you block you got jailed. Upblock also punish string that has overhead if you make a good read. It also has counterplay so it’s not OP.

Mkx was my first mk. Sure the neutral was borderline non existent and was an armored launcher shit show for 75% of its life, but if I knew what I was getting next was mk11 and mk1 I would’ve appreciated it way more. The direction it’s gone makes me sad I might not get another good mk game, I can’t imagine how it feels for the mk9 and below veterans of the series. Say what you want about mk11 but at least most of it worked and was actually completed at release.

In this, latest case, it clearly came from an identity political place. Changing the literal *race* and *sex* of characters, cannot be motivated by any "creative vision"; it has to be because of the "Sweet Baby Inc." influence that WB imposed upon NRS. Albeit, I certainly do not exonerate Boon from culpability, because if he was willing to sacrifice the integrity of the brand's stalwart characters, he is more to blame than the money-motivated WB are. After all, if Capcom turned Ryu into a drag queen and Ken into a woman (outside of their silly, DLC "party skins", that is), it would not be because it was some natural evolution of the Street Fighter narrative... and that is effectively what Boon did with many of the MK characters in MK1. We'll see if it was all just an aberration stemming from the comic book style, "timeline" trope trash that emerged in MK11; or a permanent veer in the franchise's direction and lore. If it proves to be the latter, it may well be the end of MK as one of the "big boys" in the fighting game pantheon. S.) since November 2024, it will all go back to "normal" for MK13 (as distinct from "MK2")... I’ve been a fool who has paid for the premium editions of the last two MK’s solely based on my nostalgic love for the franchise. Between MK11 & MK1 I have a total of around 200 hours. Between MK9 & MKX I had over 3000 hours. I’m done letting my memories of what used to be dictate my wallet with this franchise, I’m only enabling their choices by supporting them. I feel like everyone has looked at the last two MK games with rose tinted glasses. They imagine what the game could be instead of looking at what we actually have. Everything about MK1 was just gross feeling and disingenuous. The announced it months before release after showing nothing, a red flag. Noone even knew what the offline content was until it was leaked close to release, showing they were trying to hide Invasions and what it was. The game itself launched with an actually botched select screen, featuring an entirely missing character which should be the mascot for MK1, unfinished. What a weird, rushed game.

The reason I did not buy the KR expansion - I paid $120 at launch. Game and pass went on huge discount within 2 months, before all of the characters were even out. Then they did the exact same thing with KR (maybe worse because it's cheaper now even though it's bundled with KP1 btw). Plus not happy with balance, character selection, and lack of dev communication.

But the thing was, is that Tom was able to see the writing on the walls before it even got bad for mk11. Even more so for the beginning of mk1. Let’s stop putting all the blame on WB. Netherrealm had all the resources they could possibly ask for. The bottom line is they just didn’t care about making a good game this year. It doesn’t make logical or financial sense for WB to just completely tie Netherrealm’s hands and tell them that they can’t add a 1v1, krypt, buff/nerf characters, etc.

I’m from Australia, been playing NRS games competitively since MK vs DC (although that wasn’t a tournament game). Played MK9, MKX, Injustice 1 & 2 absolutely hardcore, supported the game and bought all the DLC. I traveled around the country to play with the best players within our community. Around mid MK11 I dropped off playing competitively, I just felt that game felt really half-assed, it just felt so restricted in terms of gameplay. Even as I got older and started to have a partner and got busy in my personal life I’ve dedicated myself to NRS games for over a decade and a half now, I did also play all the PSX and PS2 era MK games but not hardcore, been a MK fan since I started gaming over 20 years ago. I had really high hopes for MK1, seeing previews and trailers and how the combo system looked really wild and really creative I felt like MK was back. In Australia I paid $150 AUD which is around $90+ USD for the Ultimate Edition of this game, I felt right from the get go I was ripped off, the game felt really half baked, although I don’t really play the single player content but the amount of content in the game compared to previous entries was so abysmal I felt like a paid huge coin for such an unfinished game. I forgave NRS as I thought overtime it would get better, the game was enjoyable for the first few months but quickly it started to feel like the entire Kameo system was good on paper but it wasn’t executed properly, but what really pissed me off was the amount of really expensive microtransactions this game had for a $150 game, like wtf, I got done with the game less than 4 months in, and it is the first time ever that I have refused to pay for an expansion pack, I am not paying $75.95 AUD (about $50 USD) for the Khaos Reigns expansion considering now that this game is done. They are charging us nearly full price for an expansion pack, is NRS for real, not to mention the absurd amount of money they wanted to charge for seasonal fatalities and palette skins, and $60 AUD ($40 USD) just for Dragon Krystals, like gtfo.

@tylerlopez1443 True , but in 9, you look at characters like kabal, johnny Cage, and sonya. The disparity of power was pretty harsh. But it was the first mortal kombat and a long time, and it was fun. In X, I feel like they spread around the power better.

Im glad that it is over. I realized it was over when they ran out of content when they went back to Season 1 with no new content besides dlc 😂😂😂 after only 8 seasons! Invasions barely has any content, all of the season 1 items from the last (season 1 season) are all back in the season shop lol. They want everyone to just grind ToT with and just forget about Invasions lol. They really gave up on this game so fast. I do not like the character designs of this game everyone is pretty ugly besides Kenshi and Reptile. Idk what they did with the faces its as if they purposefully made the faces ugly compared to the irl face models. They didnt even try to accentuate the beauty of the IRL face models. The female designs are the ugliest of the franchise they look like men. The kameos are not fun. The characters movesets do not feel complete besides Johnny, Ashrah and a few other characters. Johnny doesn't even need a kameo to play well lol same with Ashrah she doesn't even need to depend on a kameo. But the rest of the cast they are kameo dependant. Kitana will do poorly without a kameo she also lacks mixups the most out the rest of the cast and very slow recovery timing and she has gaps in all of her strings. Her strings are very slow. The way NRS is balancing every patch has been unimpressive. They focus too much on balancing kameos compared to their characters. There will be 1 character nerfed then very little buffs for certain characters every patch. The online matches dont feel fun because only a few characters are in the meta they all use these pay to win characters. I honestly have no hope for this franchise.

I agree with pretty much all of this I’d love them to start making MKX mechanics a little more legacy. I hate the colorful new character designs I miss the dark gritty intimidating characters of MKX that game also was balanced far better I had tons of wins with every character they were all viable.

MK 11 had the best defensive options of any game. It gave you a fighting chance against pressure and endless setups. Story modes was A+ ,roster 8/10 and its still a very fun game to watch on stream.

This is literally the last Mortal Kombat i’ll buy day one or ever. I bought it on ps5 and my friend bought me the PC version for my birthday because release was around my birthday and he wanted me to play Day 1. Imagine how BAD i felt having to tell him it was LITERALLY unplayable so it’s getting uninstalled although it was a gift. Thanks Tom i get it your past is a little muddy but you’re one of the few to ACTUALLY talk about what’s fucking wrong with MK and the community. I love this franchise, even my family tells me it’s the first game i’ve ever played even though i can’t remember it, but i got a fucking unfinished, unpolished product that isn’t even functional. Despite how others feel about em i’ve moved on to SF, TK and other titles because regardless of their problems i was actually able to play the fucking game day 1. I’ll pray for yall still buying MK but i’m done wasting my money to just get shit on.

i didn’t even talk about kameos/characters, but when i was actually able to play i could go through ranked and climb with fucking johnny and homelander as long as you pick a half decent kameo 😂 It’s a fucking joke i can drop combos/cancels and still get 30-40% of your health from mid screen. Nah, I loved MK11 to death during its life cycle too. Even though it was terribly balanced, everything about its presentation, features, expression with custom variations, story, the amount and quality of cosmetics/gear, etc. were just amazing. I still wish NRS would return to MK11 to keep balancing it.

I can’t begin to tell you how disappointed with the roster I was I don’t want super villains in my Mortal Kombat. Peacemaker, Omni man, homelander and everyone else just made me not want to play. I’m not impressed with any of the dlc I’m a Takeda player but wasn’t about to wait a year or two into the game to play him. Then you have other characters like Ermac that should have never been dlc some people need to be in the base game. I think WB is terrible and MK has to cut all ties with anything woke. I actually knew years ago while playing MKX that this was the pinnacle and there would never be another MK that good.

I feel like variations are now a staple in MK. I just feel like it should be utilized like the 3D era where we have access to all of it at once. Mixed with Shang Tsung or Ashra type of variation change mid match. They can even utilize a Johnny Cage style variation change with his star power. But I don't think they should give us individual variations anymore. Every character should have 3 variations, too. With indicators on how to visually tell the difference during em.

I loved the concept of MK11 custom variations. In theory, it presented even more individuality in character expression. You may be THIS kind of Sub main, with "xyz" moves equipped, but I'm THIS kind of Sub main, with "xyz" moves equipped. Terribly executed and horribly balanced, but an awesome concept that they should expand upon.

Style should return, except 2 styles and it should help characters adapt, IN match. Each character should get two and it should be two styles that compliment, but help the character change/adapt. For example reptile can be more rush down, but swap to be more zoning. You can swap freely with a button press while idol and there will be one or two combos (per character) that swaps the style mid combo.

While I still think the DLC felt like a cash grab, the bigger issue is that the core gameplay didn’t deliver. The game relies too heavily on the Kameo system, which ends up feeling more restrictive than innovative. Many characters feel underdeveloped and overly dependent on Kameos to fill in their gaps, which only highlights how incomplete they feel. The buffs have been disappointing too-focusing on special moves instead of normal attacks was a mistake. It leaves the characters feeling stagnant and with fewer viable options, in the selection screen you feel like you only have a few options because it feels like you’re constantly running into limitations with these characters . Even when buffs are introduced in new seasons, they don’t seem to change much. Take Smoke, for example-despite everything he’s received, he still plays the same way. Overall, it’s a frustrating experience that highlights the lack of meaningful improvement where it matters most.

You cant make good games when evvvvery time you make a new game it is drastically different every time. That is how I feel about it. Capcom removes things and adds new things to each game to make it different but the overall play of characters is the same. NRS changes everything every single time. You will not do well with game play like that. Then add onto all of this that the NRS is THE MOST toxic community out there. There is a recipe for disaster. And here we are.

I think y’all should make an episode of what ideally you want MK to be. Mechanics, game speed and features. I dropped it after Quan Chi released because the Desync bug was enough to deal with at the time and the balance and meta was trash and boring. Went back to MKX (MK9 and MKX were the best ones they did). MK1 was a real let down, still barebones on content and modes and a beta on release, charging money for fatality downloads, invasions were terribly boring and repetitive with no real incentive to play it. Pay to win garbage unbalanced DLC guest crap (Homelander), gender swapping iconic characters (WOKE clowns pleasing) and then charging $50 premium for Khaos. WB needs to piss off and let NRS have somebody else take over even though NRS are to blame as well, as WB have ruined the MK franchise. The next one will be given a wide berth based on how MK1 was handled.

As a casual I can tell you the biggest problem with mk1 is that is is a competitive player game it's way to hard for a casual to keep us with it. I played mk11 and did not feel it as hard as mk1.
