Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire is the home of the Dent-Brocklehurst family, made rich by the industrial revolution, but who have struggled to maintain Sudeley in recent years. Mark Dent-Brocklehurst inherited Sudeley in the 1960s but died soon during the restoration project, and now his widow Lady Ashcombe is handing it over to her children Henry and Mollie during troubled times.

Kick the spoiled kids out, let the mom move into a small portion, and open it wide open for daily tours. People want to see castles, and they will pay for it. Have weddings, but only daytime weddings. If the wedding is early, the drunks and noise are done early and out. Charge tours of the gardens. Done. As far as the art installations...stupid.

I agree w/ all of what you said but the garden art installations. I think it would bring more people in generating more income and people that go to garden art shows like that are one of the more quiet shows that can be done there. It doesn't just benefit the family keeping the castle, it benefits struggling artists.

Well I hope that the family members blocking the full-opening up to the public - the only thing that would save the place - saw sense and were prepared to let go. I would though, understand the concern regarding their children - ie. not wanting them running around in vast public crowds - , but I didn't care of the tone of the chap telling people who were dissatisfied that there were worse things happening elsewhere. The guy complaining, had paid - and presumably driven a fair distance to make his visit. Why are people so blind to the facts of what other people face?

If this is 15 years old, then why are the owners (or the people who are here and pretend they are NOT the owners) hanging out in the comments section every few months, for potentially fresh, new ideas?? And they are still obnoxious and resistant to any ideas that would work. Be them new or old (times change). With the heating costs the way they currently are, it does make sense that those paying for it may be looking for new solutions!

With grounds that large and out buildings and numerous rooms in the castle, it’s a shame they can’t/won’t work together to find money making solutions that allow family residences to be separate from the sections open to the paying public.

You are misunderstanding the situation. Just the way people think that it is bc of "too much privilege" these days. All of the staff who work there, get paid to do a job. If they don't want to work there anymore, they can just leave and never look back. They are not working their asses off for the family. They work hard bc that is their job and they get paid to work hard. Meanwhile, as you saw, every single waking hour the family has to be thinking about how to maintain the house and make it profitable. Yes, they seem to have a great staff. But why do you think it is the staff who keep the place viable? When the rook leaks, they need to decide whether or not to sell a Van Dijk that has been in their family for generations to repair the roof and rooms. All of those "little things" are over and above the £1.5 million a year it costs just to keep the place operational. Do you know what their heating bill must be like? They likely lose sleep at night over these decisions. They all have their jobs there, working day and night, 7 days a week most summer weeks I am sure! And thank goodness! Sudeley is 1,000 years old! Queen Katherine Parr lived and died there! It would be a shame for them to sell it off. But don't think that just bc they live in a castle, they lie around eating bon-bons all day!

I know the class system should be abolished, but it is sad to see these historical castles eventually left to ruin. Catherine Parr once resided in this castle. As a lover of history, these places should be preserved. If the ancestoral family is unable to do so, who will? A developer? We've seen how some of these places are turned into a purely commercial, moneymaking venture, with little regard for preserving its historical integrity. It's just a shame.
2 жыл бұрын
I agree. The new generation has no interest in preserving the castle as a historical monument let alone run it with dignity. Lady A did what she could for many years. She should live there for the rest of her life and the castle should be handled in to Historical England for its presentation as a historical castle and museum. People in England as well as tourists want to see history in these places, not entertainment, art installations that are actually ridiculous in this environment, and evening weddings that belong elsewhere. It is very sad to see what has happened to this great castle with so much historical significance for England.
@skontheroad

The class system? What class system are you referring to that you think is still in existence? And Sudeley Castle is still running and going strong! They've built adorable cottages on their land that people can stay in and Lady A designed and decorated them. The family all live in their home. Much of it is a museum. Do you think that someone should take your family home away from your great grandchildren, for example, if they are still living in it, just bc some people are not ok with what they've done with the place? It is their home, and while it is a ton of work and overhead, it is also worth a lot of money. Why should it just be taken away from them??

This is the inevitable conclusion for ALL stately homes and castles once the source of cheap , servile labour comes to an end. Years ago the life of a servant was infinitely more preferable to a life on the streets, but once state benefits and pensions came into being it became a game-changer. It became impossible for a prominent family to physically clean, repair and maintain the upkeep of their huge properties and so slowly but surely these sumptuous dwellings fell into critical condition; this is the net result.

This is one of my favorite castles. I love history so the Tudors and war of the roses is very interesting stuff. This house was built 1000 years ago. Catherine Parr is buried on the grounds. Henry Tudor and Thomas Seymour lived in this house and Anne Boleyn visited this house after marrying Henry 8. Fascinating castle and lovely tours. I toured a bunch of castles in England and Scotland on my first trip and now I’m back to spend 2 months seeing as much of everything else I haven’t seen. It would take my whole life to see all the history in the UK. It’s not as jaw dropping as the history in the Middle East but it’s sure a ton of history! I love it all. I’ve even watched some not accurate series shows lol. They are fun to watch but historically a mess. I haven’t even messed with the crown beyond season 2. Reign was pretty much a fantastical mess of history but the set was just awesome. Tudors was a lot of fun to watch as well and Downton Abbey. History nerds unite 😂😂

When I married my husband, our venue had quite a number of rules regarding what what allowed and what was not (no cake smashing, no throwing rice, no smoke machines, no bubbles, as well as insisting on a large damage deposit). If we wanted to serve any alcohol at the reception, we would have to hire an off-duty law enforcement officer for every adult in attendance (city ordinance aimed at house parties, but it also applied to weddings) as well as our own licensed bartender. We had to clean up our own venue (pack out any decorations, took home any leftover food and cake, vacuumed the rugs ourselves and did a once over before we left to make certain there was no damage) and our reception hall, located on the same property. I understand that for £20,000 ($27,633), people expect some sort of liberties with their wedding, but I can understand the family's unhappiness as well. I'd personally tack on a massive fee for every drunken guest that causes a problem for the staff, or for the owners. The contracts that couples sign with wedding venues in the States have real teeth to them, especially if the venues are historical mansions, or other highly-desirable places such as high-end hotels or botanical gardens. Venue managers here are VERY quick to bring down the legal and financial hammer on the sort of behavior brought about by troublesome wedding guests. I've never understood the whole 'embarrassing oneself and the wedding couple by drinking oneself completely blind and causing a ruckus' thing.

There are many high profile wedding venues in the US that have strict noise restrictions due to neighbors or family living on the property. I attended a wedding in a Napa vineyard & the music had to be off by 10 PM. There are venues that prohibit amplified music or that the decibel level has to be below a threshold. It can be done & people would keep to the agreements if they really want a wedding or event at the venue. Sudeley probably has a long wait list, especially during the summer months. I guess if you want an all night drunken rock & roll party, stay in the city.

Sure. There is a time and a place for everything. However, if alone and during daylight and everyone is out. One could have a bit of fun. Especially if it keeps the rest of the family able to do what they need or want to do. I say this, because I couldn't travel. I still can't at times and resort to that thing that keeps me calm. I used to make sure they had really nice cakes bought, as it was peace of mind for me. In case, they wouldn't like it. When I did bake my own, it would cost the same. I can cook but differed from theirs. I tried that's all

Godfrey Berry Disco was not for weddings. Believe it or not. I was never drunk and clean in every aspect of the job. Assistant DJ at the time. Generisations shouldn't be made. No eating disorders either. I am not so disciplined these days but the pressure to please the audience is not there anymore. It's just a creative outlet. Better than not being able to travel or even walk long distance. I listen to Bach, Beethoven especially loud too at times. Just at times loud. At others, Gregorian chants and an occasional creative outlet. I don't drink alcohol or take drugs. My physical body too sensitive even for medicinal drugs. In one occasion 2nd degree burns, it hurts But slowly survived it. Have a blessed day

I just watched An American Aristocrats Guide to Great Estates on this castle and I'm so disappointed to hear this. This is a historical landmark! Catherine Parr is buried there and it once belonged to King Henry XIII and then his son King Edward who gifted it to Thomas Seymour who married Catherine Parr after King Henry died. Ugh.

I'd like to have a follow up video. I would like to see the progress the family has achievement in running the castle. Are you making money? The first thing you need to do is put a new roof on that castle. The interior of the castle is getting ruined. Sell some of the paintings to put that roof on! Otherwise, you won't have any paintings to sell.

I feel like one of the family members are behind the complaints from the town/action group. This family's attitude is going to get them a huge fine and the loss of their birthright. Smh.

I kept wondering why Elizabeth was referred to as Lady Ashcrombe but her son was not as Lord. Looked it up. It's from her 2nd marriage to Baron Ashcrombe. This family has no title.

That's what I was wondering too. From the few comments I've seen about it here on the video, and the very little I looked at on google, it is still going. They have cottages now, and someone said they do outdoor and even indoor events now. I'd like to know what else they added though.

There is plenty of land for luxury housing developments that they can have a stake in and still keep hundreds of acres for the castle. CEO Airbnb one week or two weekends a month would be a castle savoir, too. So many realistic ways to save it for all members of the family if they compromise for the sake of the castle/family home.

The mother handed the running of the castle to the 2 kids. She needs to keep her part of the bargain, move out to a rented house and refurbish the cottage. She is holding on because she has control issues. It should not be her decision anymore. She turned it over. Very irritating. They need the money to fix the house or it will become uninhabitable.

I feel bad for the family. It's not like they are the only family in the world with problems, but most families don't have so much hinging on whether or not they can figure out how to get along. Everyone wants a home that fits their needs, but if I want a quiet house I'm not depriving the public of history. Sure, they did a lot of things wrong, but it sounds like it's also not all on the "spoiled kids". Maintenance has been neglected for YEARS, the venue permits were denied because of their neighbors, initial renovations in the 70's were derailed because the lord died, etc. I think people would be better served remembering they are just as human as anyone else. Though from a *business* standpoint, it definitely sounds like they need to streamline their decision-making tree. You've got a CEO who is beholden to three separate yet apparently entirely equal family members, and if any two members disagree he can't do anything. He needs to answer to one person and one person only, and have full authority for a lot more business decisions than he already does.
