Interested why some positions were Top 10 and some Top 5. Skinstad, Teichmann, Van Niekerk, very unlucky to miss out! Even Spies.

Vermulan is the best springbok 8th man ever. Can do anything, be it carrying tackling, stealing which you can't say for Teichman.

I still believe that if Morne Du Plessis had gone to NZ, instead of retiring, the Boks would have won that series.

Preposterous not to include Gary Teichmann! He played with brains. Led SA to 17 consecutive test wins. Nick Mallet apologized for dropping him for the WC in 1999.

Your point on this being a personal opinion accepted. However, I do tend to agree that Teichmann should be a part of the list, and judging by the comments, it would be interesting to know why you believe some of the others like Doug Hopwood or Daan Retief deserved a place ahead of him. As for Morne du Plessis, again, the same can be said although perhaps to a lesser extent. Both these guys were at the same time great leaders, Gary perhaps more so considering his record. Biggest mistake Mallet ever made was dropping Teichmann. To this day there are people who will find it difficult to forgive him for such an obvious coaching blunder.

Enrico du Plessis At the end of the day, there can never be a definitive list of top 5 or top 10 players etc, although it does make for some good banter. It's always subjective and we as rugby fans will always have out favourites and preferences. I don't want this to come across the wrong way, but I've seen time and time again that rugby supporters' memories are quite short (in general). Which is fine I suppose, who would remember Daan Retief from the 1950s? Very few people. But then you read up on what was written about these giants of the game and you listen to people from a prior era to start understanding why these players are legends. Dr. Craven was always a good barometer of who were the best players, because he was well respected and always honest in his point of view. I also value the opinions of my dad, who knows more about rugby than anyone I know. Anyway, like I said, its always subjective. I loved Teichman and he was one of our greatest captains ever
@EnricoduPlessis6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I hear you loud and clear. The Doc and Bliksem certainly had credibility that could not be denied, and let's face it Dads always know best (no sarcasm there...) I do however wish to suggest that you edit the video and include the Teich seeing as you do not specify a number like "The Top 10". I am sure many of your staunch subscribers like me would count it a personal favour. Thanks for all the great videos. I really enjoy your channel.

We felt that Morne was a better captain than a player and that these players were better. Jan Ellis and Rob Louw were flanks, so we didn't include them. This is just our opinion, so most people will differ from it

Always difficult and a bit unfair to rate players from amateur against proffessional eras. Then again. There is a vast difference between rugby in the 80's and rugby between 1950's-70's. I would rate Gary Teichman, Vermeulen, Skinstadt and Spies (up untill 2010) as our best nr.8's in the Pro era. The ability to attack the advantage line is one of the trademarks of nr 8's in the modern game. Vermeulen's defense and positional play must be one of the best of our times. Morne Plessis must definitely count among the top 3 Springbok eightmen in the amateur era. I read a lot about Muller but never saw him play. There was also Jannie Breedt , Nic Mallet and then unfortunates like Pote Fourie whom never made a Springbok squad.
@RealRugby8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment Gerhard. I agree 100%. You cannot compare players from different eras and this is no definitive list, it's just 5 players we thought were outstanding. And yes, Teichman, Spies and Skinstad could have easily counted amongst these legends. Specially Spies, between 2007 and 2010, he was on top of his game. Go check out our tribute to Bob Skinstad, what a player! Thanks for the feedback!

You are all unashamedly referring and lauding Springbok "greats" from yesteryear but forgetting, deliberately or through ignorance or being in denial that all those mentioned were "White" Springboks and therefore not at all representative of the country.
@RealRugby6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I am unashamedly referring to these greats as greats. I definitely didn't forget about the evils of the past, because I get reminded every single day of life. The ignorance here is people who wants to take away any credit for the skill these players had. Yes, the team wasn't representative. Yes, not everyone had an even chance to play, but that shouldn't take away anything from the people who did get a chance. I have met many players from that era and I can promise you skin colour was never an issue and they would play against anyone. They were sportsman and just wanted to compete. So the ignorance is on your side my friend. Not all white people are the same and besides - this is history, what do you want me to do about it?
