There is an old Russian proverb: "An abroad calf costs a rubble-half, but the transportation takes a rubble". In origin: "За морем телушка полушка, да рубль перевоз".
@SuperSerge1116 жыл бұрын
Дмитрий Вронский, "полушка" is not a half of a ruble but is a quarter of a copeck. The copeck is a one hundredth of a ruble. So the better translation is: "Overseas a calf costs a mite but the ferriage is a ruble".

Thanks for showing us around GUM. Ive always wondered how it looked inside. It's amazing that a department store of this kind was build back in the early 20th Century. It still has a modern feel with all the new stores in it. By the look of some of the high end shops there I could probably afford a limonade and that would be about it.

Traditional GUM ice-cream (of Soviet times) is of three choices - vanilla, crème-brulee, and chocolate (in waffle cups). Today they also have cherry and pistachio. Trust me - vanilla and crème-brulee are the best.

I've lived in western Europe for 17 years now, but I'll take a cheap Soviet ice cream over Haagen Dazs or any other expensive brand every single time! It tastes like childhood. Blackcurrant is my favorite. Actually, Soviet food was pretty good in general. Btw - don't be surprised, when people serving you do not smile in Russia. It is not considered appropriate to smile, in formal situations (unlike Europe or USA). In casual life, however, Russians are really warm people.
