Now how do you replace the rope? I have the same engine and my rope ripped

The biggest tip with any job like this is to take a picture of whatever it is that you’re rebuilding before you take it apart so that you can see how it goes back together as opposed to guessing.

I have learned this the hard way on several occasions...well I guess technically that means I learned nothing! Haha thanks good thinking

My Johnson has a big tip. Thank you for the video. Trying to reuse my coil spring after the internal locating tab broke has not worked.

Nice job. Been putting this off for 2 years on my 4.5 Johnson lol. I bought a 8 Hp tohatsu but it’s so damn heavy I want to use the Johnson again but. Broken pull start. This video will help me. Thank you

How do you know if your spring is bad. Mine was working fine then it just got stuck and won't go back in. I took it apart and it all looks to be one piece yet. Is it still okay and just needs to be rewinded? Or is it toast even though its one piece yet?

I have the Johnson seahorse 15HP and my spring was just dirty. Cleaning it seemed to do the trick, as grime increased the friction. On this note, there's a lot of "controversy" in the boating world on what grease to use, if any. Grease attracts grime, so expect to clean the coil now and then should you decide to grease it with something like marine grease. I just shot mine with carburetor cleaner to flush out as much grease as possible. I then hit it with dry lube (lithium).

On mine I’ve got a old Johnson 20 hp but never messed with body motors in my life but it’s hard as crap to pull the rope. What could that be?

It recoils back fine tho?

@@RealSteelFabrications I have the same issue but my does recoil fine.

It is because you are old and weak ... heh heh ... like me. But, take it all apart, and clean it all with no grease, and it will work like you have new shoulders ...

When I tighten up the bolt holding down everything...I cannot spin it by pulling the cord? Did I lose a piece? What am I doing wrong on assembly?

you got the washer inside the cup? the housing is seated in the little hole on the block ? if its not flat it will bind, ditto for no washer.

That is a terrible way to rewind the spring. Just stick it in the real metal backing, and it sucks the spring right in, no zip ties, no fooling around ... sorry ladies ... but really, this is much harder than just sucking it through the hole ... I know, cause I'm drinkn tequilla ... my favorite, Milagro ... Reposado ... yeah, the bottles look ... funny ... but, I like it ... laters ... love your style though ... and fix my friends damn 9.9. But, I fiexed his recoil, and at least that works great ... peace ...
