Removing the Glass-Steagall Act in the late 1990s was a terrible mistake that resulted in the dramatic failure of large banks during the financial crisis of 2007-2008. Dodd-Frank and this Act both need to be reinstated immediately away to stop a new catastrophe. The banking industry laundries billions of illegal money then gets a slap on the wrist. If the common man did a fraction of this money laundering, we would be serving 3 life sentences. HSBC gave me a mortgage rate (in the US) nearly 2% lower than Chase bank and I have nearly perfect credit. Chase tried to match it as best they could but they went down to the dollar and said literally 1 more dollar and they would lose money. Chase bank didn't understand how HSBC had such good rates.
