This powerful documentary reveals the tragic health problems suffered by children born within first cousin marriages and explores the controversy surrounding this cultural phenomenon. A disproportionate number of rare recessive genetic disorders occur amongst those of South Asian and especially Pakistani descent and the programme investigates the science, political and social consequences of marrying your first cousin.

The Mother blaming the doctors for 3 of her kids being disabled instead of her choice of marrying her first cousin is just unbelievable. She should be thankful that the doctors and British tax payers are carrying the burden of looking after her whole family. Some people never want to take responsibility for their own stupid decisions.

That was beyond bizarre. My son has a genetic condition, cystic fibrosis. I am not related to his father in any way. It was completely out of the blue. He was our third and we did genetic counselling and informed our families. I'm so thankful for the medical care my son has had in Australia to keep him alive. He's about to turn 21. Doctors have done nothing but help keep my son alive and I'm so thankful ❤️ Her kids would be dead already without medical intervention.

@@fionamackie3357 Hi Fiona, I am very sorry to hear about your son. I’m glad that you and your family are here in Australia and have the medical help available to you all. It’s what makes behaviour of others marrying their first cousins so infuriating, especially when they must know the risk now! There’s enough unlucky people like your son who was born with cystic fibrosis, through no fault of either you or your husband, or your son. But for others to marry their first cousins knowing the risk, and then to have multiple children with serious genetic disorders requiring millions in health care over their lives, it’s just infuriating. If everyone was to start marrying their first cousins (yuck in my opinion), the health system would collapse. I feel like this practice is extremely selfish by them. If they were back in Pakistan, their kids would be in serious trouble with little to no medical help. I wish your son and your family all the best, I’m so glad that Medicare and the NDIS are there to support you all. God bless you all ❤

@@lhl9010 keep telling yourself that then, but the statistics and the science don’t lie on this topic and it’s been well known for decades, if not longer! You raise the risk considerably of children having genetic defects by having offspring with a 1st cousin. Not to mention that most people find it quite repulsive! It’s also extremely unfair on the children being born with these issues that most likely wouldn’t have happened if the kids parents weren’t cousins.

2 billion Muslims and 200 millions South Indian hindus don't have taboo with first cousin marriages. That doesn't mean that they have to marry cousins. Occasionally marrying cousins doesn't significantly impact genetic outcomes. With modern technology simple genetic screening before marriage can mitigate almost most of its risks. Pakistanis marrying their cousins is excessive they should widen their genetic spread consciously and where they do genetic screening should be the norm. These kind of breathlessly dissing Muslim practices without nuance is habit of the white people.

By fourth generation, I assume you mean 3rd cousins (great grandparents being siblings). If all generations were full siblings (rather than half), that would mean 1/4 common ancestry although only 1/4 common POSSIBLE genes - probably less By chance. In livestock, linebreeding (even parent-child, but not siblings) is supposed to be okay. In humans that would be pretty weird.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in my 20s and have battled major depression most of my life. My first panic attack was at 4 and my first attempt to self harm at 12. I decided not to have children because I couldn't even possibly subject my child to the anguish I have suffered. It's hard for me to understand how anyone could make these choices given such odds.

I also have Type 1 bipolar. I had increasingly severe symptoms from early childhood into adulthood. I had my son at 24, but wasn’t diagnosed until I was 29. My son’s bipolar symptoms surfaced in his freshman year of high school with his first psychotic episode. He’s now 26 and struggles mightily with his disorder. I swear with every breath in my body that if I had known that I had such a horrible illness which could be passed genetically to my child, I NEVER would have had a child. I never, EVER would knowingly subject my child to a life of such suffering.

My mother has bipolar but was not diagnosed until her 70's. It previously seemed like chronic depression. Neither me nor my sister have the disorder, but my mother really should not have had children. She was not able to be a mother, the way a mother should be. She was often hospitalized, and not really able to take an active role in our lives. She suffered from overwhelming anxiety, and we often had to care for her. This put a huge burden on very young children and on my father.

@@snmalki2363 The genetics you share with your third cousin is miniscule, as it means you share a set of great great grandparents. You share about 0.075% of DNA on average. They've done studies on best friends, and they are statistically as related as about 4th cousins based on how much DNA they share on average. This makes sense when we more often than not befriend people who tend to look more like us and act like us. And if you go to some parts of the world where people are ethnically less diverse, they often share more DNA with each other than your average stranger. (Like Ashkenazi Jews, Japanese, etc.) In these situations people might not even be actual cousins, but because of the smaller genetic group, they share as much DNA as a distant relative would. There really is no moral argument to be made about it at that point, because most 3rd cousins don't even know each other (as a single generation is about 25 years, so from the birth of your great great grandparents all the way until the birth of you is roughly 100 years) so the familiarity isn't there, and the genetic risk just isn't there unless your family regularly practices incest and have been doing it for generations lol.

What she says about her children being ok at the beginning. That can actually happen in cases of incest. The children appear to be healthy, but the genetic problems they have take a couple of years to develop. That's why her children were fine at the beginning. I knew a couple in my parents place of origin, that were cousins and their daughter was born looking fine, but before the age she would be about to walk, she never walked, she never spoke and she was in a vegetative state for 50 years until she passed away. Her husband's argument, that his brother's children are fine, even though he married his cousin too is also easily refutable. Every conception is statistically a separate event. It's always about chances. Also, his brother's wife may not be a carrier of some gene he and his wife are obviously carriers of. It looks like the children suffer from a condition inherited through an autosomal recessive manner. If his brother isn't a carrier, or his sister-in-law isn't a carrier or both aren't, then they have no chance from the very beginning of conceiving a child who will get sick. This whole situation is a combination of religious bigotry, low educational level and scientific illiteracy.

Dr. Motulsky said medical geneticists had known for a long time that there was little or no harm in cousins marrying and having children. ''Somehow, this hasn't become general knowledge,'' even among doctors, he said. Although the increase represents a near doubling of the risk, the result is still not considered large enough to discourage cousins from having children, said Dr. Arno Motulsky, a professor emeritus of medicine and genome sciences at the University of Washington, and the senior author of the report. www.nytimes.com/2002/04/04/us/few-risks-seen-to-the-children-of-1st-cousins.html#:~:text=They%20say%20there%20is%20no,people%20think%2C%20the%20scientists%20said.

@@darkorangesupercar743 there's always apologists and junk science. But Motulsky's observation might be correct, "only" a doubling of risk for otherwise unrelated first cousins. Problem is that there's often a lot of pre-existing inbreeding in those cultures, which means the inbreeding ratio can be closer to that of siblings than of first cousins. Also, there are other major problems with cousin marriage, such as that clan mentalities and clan relations are cemented, leading to more corruption and crime. And also, of course, that we should move away from arranged marriages, dowrys and all that junk.

I remember something which happened in my neighbourhood in kerala, India. There was a muslim girl , full of life studying MBBs, loved a non muslim guy . Family came to know and forcibly married to her first cousin. The cousin is not a bad guy either. but the child she had with her cousin, was having genetic problems . Now ,the girl who had to abandon her studies at marriage , was taking care her child 24/7. Every time , I see her; I imagine , how her life would have been . She would have been a successful doctor with healthy kid , if she had married her lover . Now she looks like a Skelton of her formerself. The irony is that her father is a medical doctor.

When I was in Saudi Arabia back in the 90’s, practically every Saudi I knew had married his first cousin. Finally, I asked one of them why this was so, and he told me that marriages are likely to last longer and a husband will treat his wife better if he knows that his uncle would get very upset otherwise, which would cause problems within the family. In other words, yes, it is custom not religion that perpetuates the situation, but it seems that the newer generation is beginning to see the light and not marrying their cousins as much.

Sometimes though, it is just through sheer lack of education - it's "what we've always done" and they have no wish to change their way of life. Wait a minute! Did you marry your 1st Cousin? That's obviously not normal and should be self explanatory. Why do people continue this lifestyle knowing what it can do to their children? Weird to me that this is acceptable and normal because it's not in the rest of the world although it does happen, normally in the mountains where this is all they know, like you guys.

Yea as the mother of a son with high functioning autism and adhd I don't understand this mindset. I was SCARED to have another because I don't know if I could handle raising 2 kids with a disability. I finally had my 2nd 8 yrs later once I was in a better place and healthier relationship but addressed concerns with doctors b4 even putting myself in a position to get pregnant and even now im.super vigilant of any issues that may come up. Raising a special needs child is HARD I don't get how they can be so careless
