In the hills of rural Bulgaria lies Mogilino, a small village whose main employer is the children's Social Care Home - where 75 unwanted children are growing up. Few of the children can talk, not necessarily because they are unable but rather because no one has ever taught them how.
With extraordinary access, director Kate Blewett takes us into this tragic silent world. She meets children such as, Milan, the gentle giant who spends his days doing chores and watching over the others, and mildly autistic 18 year old, Didi who is able to talk, and has plenty to say, but no-one to speak to. The children that surround them suffer a variety of problems, many are blind or deaf and some are unable to leave their beds, many are literally wasting away.
Abandoned into the hands of the staff at Mogalino these children inhabit a bleak uncaring world, so devoid of normal everyday stimulus that many have taken to rocking slowly and constantly in their chairs just for something to do.
Bulgaria has more institutionalised mentally and physically disabled children than anywhere else in Europe. This film is a heart-rending and eye-opening look into the life of one such institution.

Not uncaring, working with all they have and can do . No funds, staff only do what they are given to work with. Back in Rome they just piled them up in a place and literally left them to die . These are truly poor countries.

I’m only a few minutes in, but seeing the children rocking themselves breaks my soul. This is a coping mechanism. Children need that rocking and loving soothing motion, it feeds a part of their soul and psyche that cannot be fed in any other way. When not met, they learn to aggressively rock themselves. It’s the only way their needs are met- to meet them themselves. What a horrific reality for a 3 year old.

My heart breaks every time I see a documentary like this. The treatment of disabled and orphaned (etc) children in countries like Bulgaria and Romania was appalling. Studying about the effects of institutionalization (particularly what was observed from kids as these) is so heartbreaking! I'm glad to see that these handful are doing better, they seem so sweet. Especially, sweet Milen who was so worried that Kate was going to be going back Mogilino. I am glad there are journalists like Kate and her team who despite the emotional toll of reporting on such topics do it.

I watched the original documentary of Mogilino years ago and was angered and disturbed at what I saw. The male staff should never have been in charge with watching over the girls during showers. It was reported that none of the females were virgins. I can only imagine what was happening to those young girls under his care. It was so sad to see most of the children so malnourished and rocking themselves to soothe. The director should have been fired, she was only concerned with the building, bragging about recently buying three umbrellas for the pool and feeling sorry for herself. It broke my heart to see Milen, Misha and Vassy being abused as they were. I was so happy at how much the three as well as Didi thrived when they were taken out of that environment and moved to other facilities where they all thrived. If not for the reporter, Mogilino would most likely still be in operation today. She is a true hero!

These poor children. Can’t do anything for themselves, and no one was doing anything for them. The state of their health is deplorable. I mean it’s honestly so hard to even look at them bc it makes you feel guilty. Guilty for not knowing that there were children living like this, and guilty for being helpless, and not being able to do something after knowing their situation existed. I know this is old, but those feelings still arise within me when I look at them. It’s just a shame that the adults in charge of the children do absolutely nothing to help their condition. The cries of these babies are gut wrenching 😞😞😓 Edit : just got to the part where they are being well taken care of, and it warms my soul to see the smiles on their faces. It’s like the other people thought that just bc they could not communicate, that they weren’t deserving of love and compassion. I’m just so happy that these children now feel like they have a purpose, and are thriving. Thank god for the people who rescued them! 🙏🏼😌❤

Breaks my heart so badly to know children are raised like this due to no fault of their own....while their parents carry on in the world. Not fair and not ok. But so grateful for the update i had worried about these children for years this documentary changed my life.

Why are people so cruel to the weak and the injured? Whether or not a child has a right to a better life? Why do we still exercise the ,(RIGHT.) to hurt these children?? God have mercy on those who hurt and injure these children. They are humans not throw away children!!!!

Sorry for commenting again but listening to that lady with no knowledge or skill lie and try to explain away the fact the a nurse probly broke her leg and they ignore her pain. These people need to be in prison it takes a special kind of scumbag to harm children especially ones like these. This is a corrupt country at its best. They keep the money and others suffer because there’s not enough monitors go around.

This is such a horrible abuse of children that I can’t find words. It’s a bad pain in my heart think of the poor children never been loved her health, or talk to, and barely care for. There’s absolutely no meaningful existence and nothing left their childhood. There’s no crasher art or any other activities.

You were lucky to be able to film there. At the end of the day, it comes down to money. If the government provides the institution with money and resources, you will see changes. If not, they have to put up with the little they have. I hope your awareness brings change. Thank you for trying to make a difference.

no, it comes down to compassion. people can do a lot with very little money when they care enough to. ps, kindness is free. it doesn’t cost anything for these people to give a small fraction of love or attention to these poor children, and they can’t even manage that. despicable. it doesn’t cost money to not be abusive! it doesn’t cost anything at all to be NICE. these are CHILDREN.

I remember watching both of these years ago. I hate that y'all were forced to blur things because the newer viewers dont get to see everything like i did. Also it was found the some of those girls were sa'd by some of the men over the years and the girls never had any gynecological care either. But im guessing they left it out aince yt is stricter now as we all know. But i still love seeing this. I love seeing them happy again. It makes me smile so much. I wished i could just love on all those babies. I could never abandon my kids no matter what was was wrong with them.

I live in Bulgaria. This is so sad to see. This is very much a hidden secret and not well publicised. The people are not bad people. They need support from the government, but unfortunately, the old regime was very much prevalent even up to last year. A new government has been formed, so hopefully internal infrastructure will improve.

Hitting disable, walking past that child like he wasn't there and she clearly saw he needed her attention, the lady that oversee everything should or could of went to the government and pleaded with them, showed pictures or did something to let them know how these poor kids were living!!! It's like the 1st how they were living at were just dealing with these poor babies just to get a work check cause they damn sure didn't care about them babies! I'm sorry but that's just my opinion.🤷🏽‍♀️
