In Germany the "Ruhrgebiet" was one of the largest centers for mining and basic heavy industry (making steel and other base materials) in Europe. 30-40 years ago the German government saw that coal and other forms of mining had no future. They incentivised the companies to keep the workers on but also told them that the support would not last forever and they should start phasing out workers. At the same time they offered tax cuts for new industries in the region. Banking, advertising, IT,... Currently the Ruhrgebiet still contains more mining jobs than any other region in Germany. But it is also a center for the service industry. Mining jobs will be gone completely in 10 years and nobody is crying for them because the miners told their kids to go into one of the new work fields 30 years ago and now all that is left of the mining jobs are people who are looking forward to retirement anyway. That's what it looks like when the government is actually working for the people.

And yet the complete disappearance of coal has been pushed back to 2038 and they ordered a new gas pipeline from Russia... So it's not all good but at least the German government knows climate change is a thing so that makes them better than Trump by default.
@nonmagicmike723
@nonmagicmike723 4 жыл бұрын
All of that could've happened naturally without all that costly government intervention. If coal was dying, then it would've continued to die anyway. If anything, government intervention only wasted taxpayer money on those coal businesses and extended their longevity longer than it would've. Tax cuts for certain businesses but not others is called cronyism. Why not just lower the corporate tax rate for everyone? Make the red tape more easily navigated. And non-coal business will flourish naturally. When it comes to markets, government is good at doing things that would've happened anyway, with the added benefit of throwing taxpayer money.
@laurentdrozin812

@@nonmagicmike723 The German government was smart because they live in the real world and you live in fantasy world. In the real world, there is friction. People resist changes, people are conned into doing stupid things and thinking on the short term. What the German government did was shepherd the people in the right direction in order to limit the suffering that always come with change. Was some money wasted, sure! Was it worth it? You bet! If you want to see the difference, compare the Ruhr region with the Appalachian, or even Pennsylvania.

I don't think malls will completely disappear, but I think their function will change. At my local mall, I'm seeing less retail stores and more activities, like mini golf, an in-door go cart track, a climbing wall, bowling, laser tag, the return of video game arcades, etc. And the best part: they're always loaded with people willing to pay for these activities. It's time to start thinking ahead; we can't stop progress.

Peter Waters I love Dan's series but as a small business owner, it pains me to see people's livelihoods end. I can't even begin to tell you how many times customers complain about finding the same items online. Stores have overhead expenses and it's impossible to match e-retailers' prices. I expect Amazon to be the end of us all

I won't. I hate malls/shopping centres. Overcrowded, festering zombie walkway destinations. I prefer small stores like pookieluvie's: small, centralised and unique. You allowed this shit to happen when you allowed Wal-Mart to flourish and kill you all off. It's your fault for wanting cheaper stuff and wanting it now now now. As a former American, seeing other countries and their retail habits, Americans are the worse. Sorry...you started the hormone-pumped beef for your crappy McDonald's and the sugar/sodium pumped food.

He's not correct. Trump loves coal miners because it allowed him to win a key states like Ohio and Pennsylvania. And it may allow him to also win Virginia in 2020. My guess is that he feels that another key state in Florida is already his given his ties to the state and Rick Scott being the governor. It has little to do with being immature or 'hating women.' And if Democrats don't pay attention or have the short sighted views like Bill Maher has...Trump will get re-elected.

'HOW ABOUT YOU GET OFF YOUR COUCH, DRIVE 2 1/2 MILES TO THE STORE, AND GET A PIZZA IF YOU WANT ONE SO BADLY!". The sad thing is -- he really seems to operate on that macho "can't give me a challenge I will not accept" premise. Reminds me of a friend of my family who, when I was still a kid, was at our place and asking about some spicy peppers from Hungary; he found it peculiar, how my father sliced it up into very tiny bits to put it on his sandwich; he said, with a firm voice, he shouldn't behave like a sissy, and just take a good bite! - my mother made the mistake of saying "I bet you wouldn't be able to eat *those* that way!" She merely meant it as hyperbole - he sadly took it as a challenge; the next few hours the guy was going up and down and up and down in our backyard, and my parents were concerned they would have to call a doctor... I can totally picture Trump to do that sort of thing, for everything he isn't deeply scared off...

Shawn Yang And they did an experiment where they stopped just the planes for 7 days z. Guess what? The sky was extremely blue, most people got dizzy from the VERY clear sky's because they had become conditioned to hardly seeing the sun anymore. Here is something that most Americans need to know. China is getting rid of all those coal jobs. If I remember correctly their goal is to be coal free within 1 to 4 years depending on the size of each city. They are taking to Renewable Energy like a storm. So much so that it has driven down the cost of Solar Paneling. They are going to be the #1 leader in Green Energy. I've seen specials on it. It is a massive undertaking and creating jobs exponentially. They are moving quickly into, instead of the future of just 10 years, it's going to be more like NOW. While these terrified white politicians are determined to take this country backwards. And yes I know damn well that not all are white, but it is 98% of them that have that mindset. These people are really terrified, feeling like their control over our country and parts of the world won't be theirs to dominate like it has for far too long. And no, it was not just only the white man that has catapulted us into the future. That has mainly come about over the last 2 to three thousand years and the main way they was accomplished is that they got good at taking control over non whites. Don't think I'm saying all white men are like the many that feel this way because that is bullshit. Too many good and great white men have done so many incredible things for society. Unfortunately the current ones that want to still be the 1950 men want nothing more than to keep it at the 1950's and further back. Hell pence face wants it to go back to the 19th Century for crying out loud. Well I've written another lengthy comment. Sorry everyone. Only getting by on about 4 hours sleep for over 3 days, so I am really punchy. Peace ✌️

@GreenDragon11
@GreenDragon11 7 жыл бұрын
Zachary Wheeler I've learned the hard way, never buy pants online. Shirts can be a pain too but not as bad. And for women that issue of sizing is even greater due to women coming in so many different sizes than men. Also, most companies don't follow the same measuring system, which is absurd to me. Never seen so many different types of size charts when ordering online for clothes for women. There are standards, but only on specific items. And the one standard I hate more than all of them is the one size fits all. Give me a break. Women have an extreme variation just in our breast sizes alone and you are going to tell us one size fits all? Yeah whatever! I can't shop out as often as I would like and I am an atypical women regarding shopping. More men in my life have been the "women" in that regards. I also don't understand why women have to have more than 5 pairs of shoes. I can even understand maybe 20, but anything over that is just avarice and greed and it's one of too many reasons this crony Capitalism is a failure to any society. It can not be maintained when the biggest and only goal is rely solely on retail sales. We all already have too much stuff for the average American and then the other half barely have enough to eat much less have things. Here is a perfect sign that this country over indulges; Look into how many Storage places are in our country. It's one of the reasons why we have gotten further away from doing and learning, thereby expanding our minds/souls, spending time with each other by means of playing games actually together, instead of a lone player, all by themselves. Well I'm probably coming off in a lecturing kind of way, but it's not my intention. But I'll end now. Peace ✌️

I would buy pants in the store, but I can't get my size. Now, I could get pants with the right inseam size. Or pants with the proper waist size. But not the two together. I take a 36 (or sometimes 38) inch waist and a 34 inch inseam. I don't think that should require me to go to the Big and Tall and pay three times as much. I can, however, order my pants online and they fit perfectly.

Coal Mining jobs were already a dinosaur and most were put out of work by Automation not environmental issues. It is a job that literally kills you over time and should be done by machines not Humans. According to the Dept of Labor, the Renewable Energy field is the ONLY energy related sector that has Job Growth, and it is gaining jobs at an incredible rate. Fossile Fuel jobs are declining by up to 18% per year. I think Trump's problem is that he is stuck in the 1950's and wishes it was like when he was a kid, maybe he will bring back Doo-Wop and Rockabilly, now that I wouldn't mind.
@albertrogers8537
@albertrogers8537 5 жыл бұрын
Job Growth is not necessarily a Good Thing. People only put up with being told what to do, which is what Employment means, in order to have an income. The amount of work that you have to do to provide a service, the LESS efficient that method is. So-called Renewable Energy is so dilute it requires huge amounts of land, steel, concrete, "Rare Earths", and still needs gas turbine backup for when the wind don't blow (at 12 m/s. a.k.a. 27 mph) and the Sun don't shine, much.

If we do not have a plan and continue going about things with the same business as usual mentality, we are going to see uprisings like never before. There will still be jobs mind you, but fewer and fewer. If transportation is taken over by driverless cars we will see nearly a THIRD of the population become obsolete practically overnight. This is why I don't buy online unless it's something I really can't find in my area like something niche that most stores wouldn't bother carrying like an obscure charging cable. You don't want those people in your city losing their jobs or it's gonna suck for everyone. More unemployed people not paying taxes and not being able to afford rent straining the public safety net system lowers property values and gets investors to leave town quick and stagnates the local economy. Try to trade in a current-gen console, and its trade-in value is ten times lower than its retail price; try to trade in a $60 AAA game that's only been out for a month, and expect to get back $3 in store credit... _at best._ If you wanna get a high off of your old video games, you're better off crushing the disc int a fine dust-like powder and snorting it through the included instructional pamphlet that you've rolled into a straw. Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest.

Gregorius Daneli Yeah, they give you a tiny fraction of the worth of what you're trading in in store credit and then they charge almost the new price for it when they sell it. It's a complete rip off. Used book stores also only give you store credit but they sell the books for much less than the price of new books.

Peetar, I shop online occasionally, especially when it comes to books or things that I can't purchase at a local store. But if it's available at a local store, I'd rather buy it there, and exactly for the reasons you mentioned: I can have it TODAY, instead of waiting two days or more for it to be delivered to my house, and if I need to return it, it's much less of a hassle. I can just go to the store to either return it or exchange it in a few minutes vs. having the hassle of going to the post office to set up to ship the item back. And I've never returned an item that I've bought online, but I assume cost is involved in shipping it back. Nope. No thanks. If I have the option to go to the store and buy it, then that's exactly what I'll do.

Amazon and ebay outcompetes stores dramatically 1) Amazon gives you 20% off all video games for amazon prime. Gamesstop? NONE 2) Amazon sells me 1.25 gallon Valvoine oil for my car for $21 while autozone and pepboys charge me $35 a bottle 3) ebay sells me brand new vans size 14 for $40, jcpenny, macy's payless, etc??? do not even HAVE my size 4) I buy gpus from newegg that give me 3 years warranty, $50 rebate, free shipping, AND $30 less, Best Buy? Electronic Fry's? *NONE OF THAT* 5) Amazon allows you to rent books across the board. Not even 50% of the books I am looking for are at your local mom and pop shop, borders, or barnes and nobles 6) Amazon has a pantry section of food that is NOT even sold in stores. Just bought myself a pack of code red mountain dew and 48 oz resealable french toast crunch cereal(that cost much less than a 35 oz sold in store). The closet store that sells that brand is 100+ miles away Online is the FUTURE!!

Shopping at actual stores is terrible, I am glad it is going away. Most of the time when you go to a store to get new shoes, they don't have your size. New TV? Not the model you were looking for. Honestly, the only stores that should still stick around are ones selling perishables like grocery stores. The rest, there is Amazon and other online outlets where you can get exactly what you want at competitive prices. Gotta prop up the shipping and transport industry!

Yeah, I see a lot of people commenting like stores have some kind of nostalgia, but really I never go to the store to buy something that isn't food or clothes because the selections in stores are laughable. I go online like in Amazon and behold the far more choices I have in design and price.
