I think that its amazing how they trivialize and generalize the idea of political correctness, the same way that people do that for the "me too' movement. OF COURSE there are instances where it goes too far and it needs to be moderated, but it doesn't need to be done away with because some people go overboard. The idea of political correctness is essentially that you don't say anything racist or misogynistic. Don't be a jerk. I don't find that to be even slightly challenging. The victimization that people feel because they are asked to moderate their speech in order to be polite is something that people who have manners can do naturally, or maybe that only applies to Canadians and Brits. Bill Maher is upset because he used the slur "field nigga" on his show and there was backlash. It doesn't occur to him that many Black people actually don't use the N word, because it deeply offends them and that in a time where Black people are still experiencing potent racism where we don't have substantive civil rights and risk being murdered by law enforcement, its not too much to ask that you don't use that word. IF you feel like a victim for being maligned for using the word, then you should imagine how Black people feel experiencing racism everyday. Its so much easier for many white people to casually drop the N word, explain why its not wrong when they do it than to say Black Lives Matter or to actually do something about racism, including not using the N word. Sounds like privilege. People taking more offences to being asked not to say something offensive is ironic. Racism is an everyday occurrence that people try to describe by saying they experience micro-aggressions. What it is in most like, is constant emotional abuse, that has real medically documented STRESS induced diseases for the people experiencing it. The same can be said of misogyny. The idea that inviting people to college campuses who want to give racist or misogynistic speeches is not damaging and harmful, is belied by the experiences of those who are on the receiving end. Although Salman Rushdie hasnt personally experienced a student telling him that they were offended and harmed by his lectures, I am certain there are countless other students who have experienced that, because there are volumes of books, media etc that attest to that. I can attest to that. Having a teacher who makes racist or misogynistic comments makes you feel unwelcome and uncomfortable in class, and more importantly a target for other students. Because, if there is one thing Trump has shown us, is that a leader sets the tone. Racism is at an all time high because of the hateful things that Trump says. Some people will take other people's racist / misigynisitc speech and translate it into hateful action.

This story does not make sense. So Tim Gunn and his sister come to J. Edgar Hoover's office because their dad is a low level agent there and they get to meet his big boss once each year. However for some reason the dad is not present and two ordinary kids are brought in to Hoover's office at the same time as an unrelated celebrity. Except wait, Gunn says Hoover was dressed up as Vivian Vance! So Hoover dresses as a woman and is seen by two kids and I suppose others in the office. I don't believe a word. This has nothing to do with Hoover's sexuality or alleged cross dressing. It is an unbelievable story and the definition of "false news." In the extremely uptight atmosphere of Hoover's FBI, would you let your kids in to see the very big boss without being there to make sure they didn't make a bad impression?

@jamesmoore86674 жыл бұрын
@Ned Hill Ever hear of precedents and interpretation of the law? "There was no separation of church and state until the supreme court case in the 1930s and those were activist judges." That's because the whole point of Supreme Court cases is to interpret the law, especially constitutional law. It says very clearly in the first amendment that the government shall "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" and Jefferson himself explained this in a letter to the Danbury Baptists that this was intended as a Separation of church and state. And how could it not mean a separation of church and state? By virtue of what you said "the government cannot found a church" would not be a law if the government and religion were not kept separate. Because even at our country's founding we had a nation comprised of multiple religious traditions and the government had to represent them all. Unlike many countries, we are not a monolith when it comes to citizens and the country's legislature has to handle a country where everyone is free to practice whatever religion they so choose, or to practice no religion at all. No US citizen can be compelled to follow any religion that he or she does not want to. Plain and simple.

Regarding the 'bread bags on the feet' issue: I think Bill has it wrong here. It seems he believes Joni Ernst wore bread bags instead of wearing shoes but it was much more likely she wore them inside her shoes to keep her feet dry on rainy days. Growing up in Brooklyn, I remember putting cardboard inside of sneakers (running shoes) to keep my feet dry when I had worn a hole through the soles of the shoes. I could see using the plastic as liners inside of shoes for the same reason, so it's plausible!

America is actually ageist to the youth currently. Google "Stanley Druckenmiller Ted Talk." He shows the elderly in America have the best standard of living and quality of life in the worlds history. George Will has said: "The millennials are going to be this country's first lost generation." The senior citizens get a positive payout from Medicare, Social Security and have real company and government pensions not bullshit 401k's. I'm not some liberal do gooder or conservative. I served in the military and work as a director of finance at Duke Energy. I love facts it allows me to see reality. I think we need to help the millennials they've gotten a shit hand. They got 2008, student debt crisis, all time high food prices, increased taxes, all time high car prices and clowns for president like Barack Obama, George Bush, and Donald Trump. They didn't get good leadership like Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan. It's gonna be a tough time for young people. We are facing a tough time for our youth.

Fran Lebowitz smashes it with the line “trump didn’t win because he did something right, he won because he did something wrong”. So true.

Pano 360 Trump did do something right, he had a good campaign. Unlike Hillary. She lost to an orange puffball ffs. That's ultimately on her, and people should stop making excuses for it.

trax72 Her point was that "his good campaign" was a bad campaign. Kind of like doing heroin is great, but it's very bad.

The Clinton camp and a lot of people, myself included, did not know how many cockroaches under rocks there were that would respond to Trump's messaging. Bannon and Manafort knew it and they were able to leverage it to a razor-thin victory.

guys, you need to understand nuance. fran wasn't referring to trump doing "something wrong" with his campaign - she was talking about trump doing wrong things like calling mexicans rapists, grabbing headlines for talking about grabbing pussy, and shit like his lame-ass nicknames for other candidates. of course, that could've been part of his "campaign strategy", but if so, it would've been highly irregular and completely untested strategy. if anything, scandals used to destroy candidates, back in a more rational era. and FWIW, hillary and her campaign made lots of mistakes - key among them, skipping the swing states in the final weeks. but there were also many external factors that contributed to the loss, such as comey's random (unsubstantiated) accusation, and the fanatical following that trump somehow managed to attract. the electorate was so polarised and even toxic that it defied all the analysts. the election was a singular anomaly. btw, this does NOT exculpate hillary one bit... it was just a huge mess and she sucked at reading what was going on.

messi10 Socialism is always doomed to fail. If you want your country to be homogenous and mostly white with a fraction of the US population and diversity, sure Sweden and the European model might be for you. Compare Venezuela to Chile. Both are South American, one is socialist the other capitalist. Venezuela has an abundance of natural resources, Chile very little. And because of capitalism, Chile is currently doing worlds better than Venezuela.
