No there's no inflation. Just because certain things have been bid up, overall things have been deflationary. Just think about it: most people do not have enough money. They're in debt and struggling. Everywhere. Just because "inflationary" things have been happening doesn't mean they have been powerful enough to overcome the massive deflationary forces facing the world... They have to print like 20 trillion more in the US to even move the needle... but that's where you have an argument - cuz they're gonna do it.
@michaels4255

Recent price rises in certain items have been a physical supply phenomenon, not a monetary phenomenon. The supply chain problems will resolve themselves. We have to think about the movie, not the freeze frame.
@michaelglenning5107
@michaelglenning5107 3 жыл бұрын
@@michaels4255 what if the supply chain problems do not resolve themselves and persist or worsen? The Grand Solar Minimum is upon us and we are looking at 30 years of sharply reduced crop yields. If you look at the percentage of incomes people spend on food (30% to 60%) currently in lesser developed/successful economies, you can see huge deflationary pressures as no money left to spend after food purchases.

Love it. I'm a big Napier fan but he often speaks in riddles. With Clapham there to interpret I got much more out of the discussion. I do have one disagreement with his characterization of the money going to small businesses, when he talks about Taco stands and Uber drivers receiving money I don't think that really applies in the US the same way it may apply elsewhere. The PPP loans are for businesses with employees to continue to pay their wages so they don't have to be laid off. These government programs do nothing for sole proprietors who have no employees. I run a one-man business and I have not received one penny in PPP "loans." Outside of the stimulus checks that went to everyone the only money I got was $1,000 from the SBA as an emergency grant. And I think very few people receive this money because government is completely inept at getting the word out to the people who need it. The only reason I knew about it was because I read something in the media about grants up to $10,000. Was glad to get the $1k, but it's a drop in the bucket honestly. Later the SBA people sent letters and even called to try and get me to take out loans, but I told them I had no interest in borrowing, only in grants. All of this is to say that outside of the usual grift and fraud, I don't think there is a lot of fiscal money going out to "Taco stands and Uber drivers." Not enough to drive a massive spike in inflation. The government will have to become more effective at shoveling out cash before that happens.

A stock market, equity market or share market is the aggregation of buyers and sellers of stocks (also called shares), which represent ownership claims on businesses; these may include securities listed on a public stock exchange, as well as stock that is only traded privately, such as shares of private companies which are sold to investors through equity crowdfunding platforms. I agree somewhat, the bit that I am struggling with, is, how this will change how you invest. Surely companies that can pass on inflation costs increase as price rise to customers are going to do just as well. The key being, are you selling products that ppl need or products that ppl can do without. I think high end luxury items will do particularly badly compared with mainstream products that ppl will buy or they need to buy, regardless of inflation.

Technology is a fundamentally deflationary force and the pace of technology is increasing exponentially. We are looking into the future where you can get a 3D printed house built in a few days.. Technology bring the prices down , enhancing debts since the value of money ( purchasing power ) Increases . The fed just try to devalue the value of money to inflate the debts away . Taking your example , technology is deflationary but creates other stuff as well . Ie : cars do not get cheaper because even tho technology would bring the prices of car without any improvements lower , a regular car is still around 20/30k because technology add new features on a car every year . Technology is deflationary on old technology but create new inflationary needs as well .

So stay in equities and wait for inflation to reach 4%. At 4% the CB may jack up the short term rates and mess up the equities bulls. As long as rates are kept down and inflation keeps going up, there will be party for equities. The issue is that as inflation keeps going up, so do the interest rates. How can the CB manage to keep them down? If they keep buying bonds and inflating their balance sheet to infinity, it may cause a currency collapse followed by hyperinflation. If they force savings institutions to buy bonds, they have to sell equities to buy those bonds, and that will mess up equities bulls.
