Fireworks are great to watch and even better to photograph:). Capturing the burst of lights and unique/interesting patterns is awesome! Regardless of your camera, I take you through the steps to make it happen. I used a Nikon D3400 for this video, but my technique/settings apply to any camera.

Link to the generic wireless shutter remote: amzn.to/2tnfbJP
Link to the Nikon manufactured wireless shutter remote: amzn.to/2tmYKhg
Which one would I choose? The generic - should work fine in my opinion and is a fraction of the Nikon's cost
==============================================================
Amazon Basic Tripod (currently runs about $17; similar to my Velbon in the video - low cost but served me well over the years:)):
amzn.to/2nbUvlz
Zomei Z666 (in video; currently runs about $90):
amzn.to/2muwAKz
Dolica (NOT in video but offers Aluminum build and ball head but does not convert to monopod - a slight cheaper alternative; uses lever locks; runs about $50):

I have an 'older' D3100 and am excited about taking some shots of tomorrow night's Sternwheel Festival fireworks display on the Ohio River. Will be a bit of a challenge, since I've never shot real decent fireworks before, and I'll be sitting along a set of cliffs about three miles downriver. Tried it last year and got caught in the rain. Thanks very much for the instructions.
@RealWorld

Glad to be of help and enjoy the fireworks!:) The D3100 is a capable camera and should be able to capture fireworks. Conduct a bit of recon in the morning/afternoon to determine a good spot to watch/shoot the fireworks. Get to the spot early enough to get setup and relax:). If this is your first attempt, you might be surprised to see what you can capture!:)

Wish I had seen this video last year (2018), but noticed it earlier today before I went to work for a new year "Have a few drinks, and take the rest of the christmas candy/new year party 'things' home!" 'party' 😁 I managed to get a few good shots, even at my bad location. There's houses all around me, and most of the firework was covered by them, but as said; I did manage to get a few good shots. I even had a chance to catch a car driving by to get my first 'proper' time lapse photo with some nice trailing brake lights 😁 You never fail to impress me Mark - Hope you have a great new year, and may 2020 bring you many more subs, fortune and prosperity.

@@RealWorld No worries Mark - I've been busy with work myself, and while I'm hanging out on KZbin I'm not that _''social''_ when I'm just trying to unwind - I have some catching up to do myself 😊 But yeah I did notice your uploads have been "lacking", but I'd much rather have quality over quantity! I love your approach to your uploads, the entire vibe that comes from them and all the technical info that you give out. Just in case you re-read this comment I have a few suggestions for possible content in 2020: - How to take photos of the sun without ruining your eye, and taking care of your equipment (Photo Genius got a question like this, and said exposure to the sun might/can do damage to the sensor). - Star photography, specifically, equipment: ESPECIALLY if you're able to borrow some from your local photo gear vendor, else please don't bother (I really want to invest in a startracker-type-thingy myself, but I'm kinda strapped for most of the year - Trying to save up for a trip to Scotland and my license 😁) I also have an "odd" question: Do you use an IPS monitor or a TN/VA monitor? My brother recently got a new gaming monitor, which is IPS and while I've constantly heard the colour reproduction is better I was dumbfounded by it. Honestly I'll keep an eye out for a cheap IPS monitor simply for editing photos during 2020.

We are now in August and in the UK in my city (Plymouth) this means the British Fireworks Championships. Held over 2 nights (this year it's the 14/15th) with 6 teams competing over the 2 nights. Weather and health permitting, I hope to be there on at least 1 of the nights with my D3400. I do have the IR shutter release and I do have a tripod, so with your settings advice I am good to go. If I can't make it to the actual venue I do have quite a good vantage point near to where I live so I am hopeful of some good shots.

Yes and here is why ... if you are using the wireless remote, the camera will try to lock focus when you press the button regardless of back button focus:). Hi I am new at using a DSLR CAMERA. I currently use a Nikon D500 still learning all the ins and outs of this camera and learning from watching your videos. My question when you are using a AF lenses with VR and ED do you have to turn off all that in the lense and also turn off autofocus, auto ISO, noise reduction, etc in the camera setting in other to shoot 100% in manual mode with hoper focus point like you mention in your video. Would you mind to make a video explaining step by step what settings to have in a Nikon camera not only to shoot fireworks but also to take brackets shoots to turn them into a HDR photo. I know that I’m asking a lot of your time. Thanks for all the videos and knowledge that you have shared with many of us.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post:). The D500 is a beast of a camera ( I created a review video which can be found here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jn-9YmCilNxnnNU ). The lens will override the body. For example, if you switch from AF to manual on the lens, the camera will not use AF. Creating HDR using multiple images from bracketing might make for a upcoming video;). Sounds like you are on the right - stay the course and keep practicing/experimenting/shooting:).

Hello! Thank you so much for your detail instruction. I'm going to take some pictures of fireworks tonight and learnt a lot from your video. I just have a question regarding the auto focus and manual focus. From your video, at 7.15-7.30, you recommended that we should use auto focus to take fireworks pictures. But in the end of video, you said that we have to switch to manual focus mode to take picture. So if I choose the manual focus code, which point in the sky I should focus on? The fireworks or just any spot in the sky is ok? Once again, thank you so much for your tutorial.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback and sorry for the late reply:). While in auto focus mode, try to focus on anything in the distance before the fireworks start ... this could be a far away tree, building, bush, etc. Once you lock focus, switch to manual focus mode. This will prevent the camera from trying to auto focus before each shot. If you focus on an object far away, you should achieve hyper focal distance which is good ... what is hyper focal distance? I created a basic video on depth of field which should be of some help - kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3jIpKuAmr5rldU

Thanks a lot for the video. I've one question. What impact will it have on the quality of the image once you turn off the noise reduction? Will the picture be too noisy? I've ordered a Nikon D3400. Waiting for the delivery of the camera. I'm new to DSLR and I've watched many of your videos. Videos are awesome, very clear explanations and demos. I can't wait to try out what I've learned from the channel.

Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Noise reduction really comes to play under high ISO and when shooting jpeg. If you are shoot RAW or shooting jpeg at a low ISO (100), the noise reduction has very little if any impact. I recently released a video on Lightroom and plan to release more where I will touch on noise reduction ... noise reduction can be handle in post production. If you do not plan to post editing your photos and plan to shoot in jpeg at night, enable it:). Once you receive your camera, take time to explore all the features and work your way into aperture priority or shutter priority ... practice, practice, and above all else - have fun!:)

Sadly I don't think focusing at infinity is as simple as "rotate it in this direction as much as you can". I've tried this for shooting star fields, and it didn't work; after some research, I think the problem is that the last setting is actually _past_ infinity (whatever this is supposed to mean), the real infinity is somewhere a bit in the other direction. So, autofocus on the moon or in the distance like you say, and if there's no moon or any lights around... live view, zoomed in, and try to get the dots to be as small as possible... I don't know, if there's a better way, I'm definitely open to suggestions...
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post and I have a few thoughts on the subject:). You are correct and I have heard/experienced the same - infinity is actually a slight rotation back from a traditional infinity indicator on any given lens. Unfortunately, the Nikon 18-55 lens does not have an infinity indicator along with other lenses. A major concept to understand is hyper focal distance. This is the distance at which the given point to infinity will be in focus. I created a video which might be of some help to better understand the concept - kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3jIpKuAmr5rldU

RealWorld By the way during fireworks what’s the preferred zoom on the lense 18 35 or 50 on the kitlens. I have a 35 mm prime lense
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 жыл бұрын
I typically like to leverage a zoom lens since my distance to the show may vary and I can use a higher aperture (like f/8, f/11, etc.). If I did not have a zoom lens and given the choice of a 18, 35, or 50, I would lean towards the 35:).

I see all your pictures are exposures longer than 4 seconds. Some of them even 7 seconds. What if I want to shoot only the "flower" in the sky, not to follow the whole path of the firework? Do I need to lower the f-stop and shoot at 2 seconds when they explode or just anticipate the explosion without closing the aperture?

You are on the right path!:) Open the aperture to allow more light into the sensor, shorten the shutter, and try to anticipate the explosion:). This is doable but will take some trial and error.

Question, what does the Noise reduction setting do? Why would you want to have it turned on? I had issues using the shutter release button, could never find the sweet spot in the camera. I purchased a better one that plugs in and then has a remote shooter, works great! Loved the video, you always do a great job! Rich
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback/question Rich!:) Noise reduction helps to remove pixelation that typically occurs are higher ISOs. For example, if you shoot an image at ISO 6400, you may begin to see some pixels throughout the image although more prominent in the dark areas (likewise 12800 will show much more noise). I much rather control the noise reduction myself in post processing (may create a video on how this is done in post process along with other features, etc. of post processing). If you over leverage noise reduction, the image can look like plastic so you want to strike a nice balance. When shooting at ISO 100, there is little to no need for noise reduction. Regarding the cable remote ... nice!:) The cable is more stable in my opinion, but I have simply used the wireless for so long that it has grown on me:).
@MrMoonpie001
@MrMoonpie001 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your response, I was not aware that the camera had a noise reduction. I know there is a setting in the camera to adjust ISO. I would think if you put a cap on how high you want to shoot in ISO, you could adjust much later in post processing by shooting a RAW image? I notice this noise reduction does slow down your camera, especially when you go to shoot nature shots or activities. I did not know up till now that the problem is probably the camera processing noise reduction. Thanks for your time, I love your videos and have used both camera and home repairs in the past. Kind of a neat format you got going on there! Rich
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback/question!:) RAW is nice because it captures everything on the sensor without the camera making any modifications/adjustments. RAW allows you to easily adjust the white balance in post processing without losing any details/information. Unfortunately, RAW can only do so much when it comes to noise (still better than jpeg though:)). Noise is typically a result of high ISOs which cannot be adjusted in post process even in RAW (unlike white balance). I may focus on post process techniques in up-coming videos ... post processing is another creatively outlet in my opinion and adds needed polish to any given photo:).

Hi, so happy to see your covering many aspects about the d3400. I enjoy all your videos and return to them now and again. Not sure why but you make it look so easy and when I try to copy that well...things turn out different! lol/ Lately ever since I spotted a Cardinal and BlueJay in my backyard I've set up a couple bird feeders. IN the morning hours I take my camera to take pictures and here lies my question...After taking pictures with my 18 to 300 zoom lense I find the bird isn't as clear as I want it to be. In my viewfinder it looks clear but not in post processing..I've tried in Shutter Mode, (sometimes pictures are dark) well you can say I've tried every mode...which would be the right one? I'm sure there is room for improvement, hopefully, or do I need to step up to a bigger camera? thanks
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) Shooting birds can be lots of fun. Since you are photographing birds at a feeder, this means you can more easily lock focus which is nice. I am a big fan of back button focus (created a video on this which can be found here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoTXe2mHor6pprM). If the scene is relatively dark which might be the case in early morning hours, you will have a tough time shooting faster shutters at low ISO. Soooooo, you will need to increase the ISO in order to maintain proper exposure at a faster shutter:). In order to address your specific challenges (focus (not as sharp) and exposure (relative dark images)), consider the following: --> leverage back button focus to lock-in on the feeder --> set your aperture to f/ 6 or 7 (you can open wider if you like but keep depth of focus in mind (kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3jIpKuAmr5rldU)) --> raise your ISO as needed (1600 or 3200 might be the answer) hope this helps!:)

to set my aperture to f/6 or 7 do I shoot in Aperture Mode?
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, place the camera is aperture mode and increase the aperture slightly (6 or 7 should do). If the ISO is set to 100, the camera will control the shutter and may set it relatively low if the scene is relatively dark. If this happens, increase the ISO. As you increase the ISO, you will see the shutter speed increase as well. If the bird is sitting relatively still on the feeder, you might be good to shoot at 1/100 of second or so. If the bird has any movement, keep increasing the ISO so the shutter increases - try 1/300 or faster.
