Beautiful review. Nice and superb. Main pros I felt are, 1. Ability to shoot in RAW. 2. Manual Focus 3. Massive zoom 4. Bird shooting 5. Moon shooting 6. VR is awesome Some cons are 1. Image quality is not good above 1300mm. Some images have slightly fuzzy. 2. Tripod screw is not in right position. (Manufacturers does not think about centre of gravity) At full zoom level, it may fall off or at least not stable. I have Nikon p900, earlier version of this one, which doesn't have raw shooting capacity. Also tripod screw is fitted in the wrong place. But definitely a major upgrade from Nikon coolpix p900 to p1000. Cost wise it is very high compare to p900. I really enjoyed all the 30 minutes of the video. Thank you.
@RealWorld5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback Ravi!:) You have some interesting points ... the fuzzy images at higher zooms might be attributed to the atmosphere and/or using VR at relatively slow shutter speeds /and/ the center of gravity does shift at full zoom:).

Great review, and you also managed to shoot and present some very solid images. Many reviewers just dismissed this camera. I recently had a play with one of these and discovered you can get some good things out of it if you know what you're doing. It's a good astral and long distance back-up for subjects you just can't get in any other way that you need to record, rather than present in pristine form.

One of the best reviews out there and You have done it. There is a lot of negative bashing of this camera in particular to its sensor size. People forget that if they were to buy this much power in the lens form alone it would cost a bundle. But here one gets it all for a 1000 dollars or so with the prices falling to boot. It is not really for someone as the *only* camera in house. But a keeper for those special needs, and with Raw files + post processing, fantastic is the word.
@RealWorld4 жыл бұрын
thanks for the post/feedback victor and glad to be of help!:) fully agree - some photographers are overly focused on the sensor size with this camera. yes, the sensor is small but for good reason - the sensor to lens ratio creates an incredible zoom factor. yes, not great for portraits but great for any looooong needed zooms like the moon:).
@eldiabolico37505 жыл бұрын
You need to apply the crop factor also to the aperture so effectively, everything shown has to be multiplied by 5,7 times. In addition 1/2.3” can go max to ISO800 without huge noise problems. The trick around it is actually to use a tripod at the lowest ISO or shoot in black & white :)
@RealWorld5 жыл бұрын
Agreed:). The crop factor also applies to the aperture.
@eponine19665 жыл бұрын
You forgot to mention the cost. For the price you can buy a dslr plus lenses that would serve you better. That noise should be a warning. Better photos with a cheap 70/300 for birding. Always appreciate your reviews!👊

Thanks for this review! I like it that you talk about the 5.56 crop factor, and that it isn’t really 3000 mm, but rather 539 mm. But the crop factor applies to the aperture as well! So it's alright to call it a 4.3 - 539 mm f/2.8 - 8. But it’s not okay to call it a 24 - 3000 mm f/2.8 - 8. If you apply the crop factor to the focal length, you must apply it to the aperture as well. So it’s really the equivalent of a 24 - 3000 mm f/15.5 - 44.5! So no wonder that it doesn’t do smaller apertures. But I'm surprised at how good the image quality is at these extreme focal lengths. I really didn’t expect that. I own a Sony Cybershot DSC HX400V with a Zeiss 24 - 1200 mm equivalent lens, and if I take pictures of anything far away, the IQ really sucks. It’s fine for the first 50 ft, but already at 50 metres it begins to look pretty dismal, and at a quarter mile it just falls apart, even on a sunny day, while my APS-C with a 150-600 mm zoom still looks fine. Your moon shot looked great to me! It must have something to do with the relatively good size of the front lens element, I guess: It’s much bigger than my Sony's.
@RealWorld5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) LOL - agreed ... the crop factor applies to the aperture as well. I had to work harder to get the most out of this camera ... in the end - the extreme zoom shots were nice:).

You do know if anyone was to make a 24-3000 f2.8-8 lens for a full frame it would be the size of a Truck? 😂 This is all "Equivalence" they are referring to. Talking about aperture, I completely agree, but f2.8 is f2.8 in term of light gathering but DOF is going be of a 539mm F8 Lens.

@artistjoh4 жыл бұрын
You missed out on a huge plus for this camera. Macro. A lo of people think of macro as getting the camera really close to the subject, and that is necessary on some lenses. However, getting close like that scares critters away, and can give problems with shadows. The P1000 can do macro from the telephoto end. It means being able to fill the frame with bugs and other small things, but have the camera a few meters away. It means that critters keep doing whatever they were doing without feeling threatened, and shadows are not an issue. It make the P1000 a stand-out macro camera. It is worth comparing its macro to the best quality super-zoom, Sony’s RX10 Mk4. The Sony has a much larger 1 inch sensor and much faster apertures, inevitably leading to much higher quality images, but that wonderful fast lens comes at a cost - a much shorter tele range plus macro that is very poor in comparison. It doesn’t magnify as much as the P1000, and the best macro is at 50mm and 600mm, but between those two points it has much reduced magnification. So you would buy the Sony if the priority is image quality and low light performance, and you would buy the P1000 if the priority is tele reach and macro.
@RealWorld4 жыл бұрын
The P1000 is a great camera to zoom into various subject but is not a true macro (creating a 1:1 representation on the sensor). I created a video on macro photography which can be a bunch of fun and this camera will get you close - really close:).
@youdontwanttoknow52034 жыл бұрын
The biggest selling point for me would be the focus ring. Point and shoot cameras are not great with auto focus. So many shots lost because the camera grabbed the wrong item and blurred the image. If they would only put a focus ring on point and shoot cameras, no matter the price, it would make a HUGE difference. The sensor size is another major selling point for me. Don't need a lot of fancy settings if they get the most important ones.

If you want many followers, you just have to make many videos. Quantity is more important than quality. Like Ken Wheeler. The guy is a self infatuated nutcase (maybe many of us are, but unlike Wheeler we try not to make it too obvious), and he repeats himself endlessly, and most of his videos aren’t all that interesting, because they’re totally unprepared. But he sure puts out a lot of them, and just look how many followers he’s accumulated.

Hello sir I wanna buy my first dslr And I wanted to ask. Which one should I go for? I have thought of these cameras 200d, 750d or d3400 I wanna learn photography plus also want a overall good camera in terms of videos as well
@Hansinho105 жыл бұрын
If videos are important to you then I would choose the 200D. It's a solid overall camera and the dual pixel technology does a very good job with the auto focus while filming moving subjects. There is also a newer model (250D) out now, but if the price is cheaper the 200D does the job as well. If you want to film yourself or take selfies, you can flip out the screen of the 200D. The D3400 would give you a very good sensor with regards on image quality. If you prefer just to take stills, then it's also a very good camera because it gives you a a lot of capabilities in dynamic range when you post process the RAW images.

Although the cost for the P1000 is not cheap, it is still much cheaper compared to a traditional DSLR body/lens combination to achieve similar reach (much much cheaper:)). Fabulous review, thorough and professional. I have a question about the tripod head you use. I found as the lens is extended the cg sifts forward and the image moves. Have you experienced this, and if so, any suggestions on how the P1000 might be more securely mounted on a tripod?
@RealWorld5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback/question Thomas!:). I discovered similar challenges when the lens was fully extended. As expected, the weight shifts forward and the mounting plate must be locked down and the head needs to be tightened otherwise the camera will drift:). I first noticed the drift when shooting the moon ... when using extreme zooms any slight movement is magnified:).

This is a tiny sensor with limited detail and high iso issues. It's a nice fun camera which I use for shots like going to Yellowstone but is nothing like what a pro Camera can do so it depends on the specific needs you have. At the reviewer... You are forgetting the effects of refraction at f8
@RealWorld5 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh yes, refraction relates to quantum physics and tends to show itself at super high apertures although I question how noticeable it becomes to the naked eye:). Refraction has little to not impact on most cameras in my opinion, however at f/8 with a crop factor of 5.56, refraction will play a bigger role. I captured the moon (post on my IG account) at 2600mm f/7.1 at 1/15 of second and did not notice much if any impact, although I suspect the shutter speed played a larger role in impact to detail:). Nonetheless, the end result looks good in my opinion.

The 950 seems to have better dynamic range but the b700 is pretty good. In good light I have had some stunning photo's. The range makes up for not having a m43 or apsc sensor. @RealWorld4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback/question Sven:). Yes, there are many differences between that two cameras that may justify the cost. They both share the same size sensor, however Nikon put more glass/lens in the camera to reach 3000mm which is nice:). I have this camera and to say I adore it is an understatement! For me is the ultimate camera! That said I want to focus on it weakness; low light photography. If you are shooting handheld you will be forced in most cases to raise the ISO. I agree that the maximum ISO number for good images is 800 with this camera. What I did is that I bought a tripod. It allowed me to raise the exposure time instead of the ISO. It worked in almost any case. Except of one. And I don't know if there is a solution for this. I wanted to photograph the people passing by through the street. But not in the artistic way where they are blurred. In the normal one. To do so I had to raise the ISO and loose detail. I don't know if there is any other way. The tripod didn't help much on that.

I have a few questions, after thinking of perhaps purchasing this camera, as I'm an 'enthusiast' and have been for many years, enjoying Landscape Photography the most. I use the Nikon D750, and have a good assortment of lenses, and thought rather than move up to the much more expensive D850 or the higher end Mirrorless cameras, that this camera might be a good all round 'fun' camera to own. It did lead me to a few questions though, which I didn't hear in the video interpretation (or may have missed somehow) so I will ask them here. 1). Does the camera have a 'timer', which can be used so you have no camera shake when the shutter fires? 2) Can you add an external shutter release? 3) Is there a 'bracket' feature on this camera to set up for automatically bracket say...3 - 5 shots? 4) Is the camera water resistant at all (thinking more about possible rainy days of use)? 5 Is there a 'histogram' available on this camera? 6) Can you set the AE-L button to 'back button focusing'? Thanks in advance... great video, and well shot/edited!

Here is a quick link to one that seems relatively inexpensive - amzn.to/2AMmHR2 #3 ... it appears to have bracketing although I did not test it:) #4 ... it is not weather sealed, however I have used non-weather sealed cameras in various conditions over the years without any issues (rain, snow, sand). should be fine in relatively light rain but might have problems with a heavy down pour left outside:). #5 ... hmmm - i believe so but not have it with me to confirm:) #6 ... unfortunately, no - no option to set the AE-L button to back button focus

Thanks.That's a great video. You have made it clear here with your shots, photography is not only about gears, it's more a mix: art + gear + know your gears and what you are doing, what you want to do or shoot... 16 MP, 1/2.3",... of course there are some limitations (Noise, Low Light, aperture going down to 8 when zooming in,...) but your shots are excellent Yes this bridge superzoom camera is big. But bridge cameras are still good options for people who want to learn photography without spending too much. You have a bit all in one body: DSLR and Mirrorless features, a bit of wide and a bit of telephoto, mic and headphones jacks, 4k,... Hope #Nikon will bring back a brand new 1" sensor (or a 1.5, MFT multi aspect sensor) like the DL24-500. A 1" sensor, built-in EVF, touchscreen (tilting, fully articulated), 20MP, much more improved lens... a good hybrid bridge for stills and videos to match the #RX10MIV, #FZ1000MII, #LeicaVLux5, #FZ2500 or #FZ2000, #G3X or #PowershotG3X... BTW the specs on the DL24-500 were impressive, too bag #Nikon cancelled the DL serie : kzbin.info/www/bejne/horWmGyooruWm6s Good luck and keep enjoying photography.

What's the point of taking a black and white photo with a little bit color?
@RealWorld5 жыл бұрын
Isolating colors is a great technique to emphasize various parts of the image making for a unique snapshot:). Some cameras offer built-in features to isolate color but I use Lightroom to do the same and created a video on the technique as well - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpaQmZmFnNSAh68

While 3000mm equivalent sounds great, from my perspective the limitations outweigh the benefits. A lot of your sample photos that were taken with a longer focal length look like they could have easily been taken with a camera without a long reach, but just moving closer to the subject; the ol' zoom with your feet method. Also, to use anything above, say 1000mm eq. would likely require a tripod. Who the heck wants to carry a tripod around all the time? Personally, if I wanted more zoom in an all-in-one package, for a little less money (used), I would get the Sony RX10III with a still long 600mm eq. lens that is brighter, and a 4X larger sensor for cleaner images, especially when the light gets low. Or, for a little more money (again used), the RX10 IV adds phase detect autofocus.

Hey buddy, thanks for the review! Real excited about the zoom and it really works better than I had thought it would. One thing that I am now addicted to is back button focusing, can you set this up to shoot that way? Haven't checked the price on this yet, do you feel the camera is closer to a micro 4/3s than a Nikon crop sensor? Have a great day! Moonpie

Hmmm interesting:). This a late comment but curious to know if you figured it out. If you are in auto focus and the lens is clean, you should be in good shape (providing you have enough light on the subject as well).

@RealWorld5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post!:) Are you referring to panning an action with a relatively slow shutter to capture a bit of background motion blur?:)
@duckscrossingtheroad5 жыл бұрын
@@RealWorld yes the slowest I can achieve is 1/80 but even those photos aren't great, my insta is @galwaybaywatch, if you want to look.
@RealWorld5 жыл бұрын
I caught some of your photos on IG - nice!:) Panning shots are great in motor sports and wildlife. I may add this to my list of video topics. In the meantime I have a few suggestions ... use shutter priority and start around 1/125, use continuous shooting mode, use one of your focal points to track the subject/car (center if you can) and pan with the subject/car while taking a burst of shots. 1/125 should allow your subject/car to stay in focus while panning with fast movement will create a blur to some extent (feel free to adjust the shutter speed to achieve different results):).

I have a question for you the Nikon 18-55 is 3.5-5.6 but the Nikon 18-70 which is a longer focal length is only 3.5-4.5 how come it's longer but offers a wider f/stop
@RealWorld3 жыл бұрын
ahhh yes ... this involves optics and physics:). if you ever see a sports photographer on the sideline of a major game, you will see large lenses. these lenses are typically fixed 300mm or 400mm lenses with wide apertures (f/2 for example). this is doable because of the housing and glass. in a similar way the 18-70 has a larger housing and more glass allowing for slightly wider aperture.

Thank you for doing this review. I just ordered my P1000 from Amazon this morning, around 3 years since you made this review. I cannot help but wonder if the P1000 is more of a video-centric type camera than a stills camera ? The main focus of your analysis of the P1000 was as a stills camera, while my only interest is using this camera as a 4K video camera. I wish you had taken more video. I was wondering how the exposure setting behaves when using this camera in video/manual mode ? Does one have full control over being able to set the exposure, or does the camera only allow you to manually adjust the EV settings ?

Could this camera take the place of buying $2-4k 600mm lenses so I could just buy 18-100mm lenses for my 5600? or are the 200-600 lens better in good light?
@RealWorld5 жыл бұрын
Yes and then some as this camera will reach much further, however you will sacrifice image quality to some extent due to the sensor size and resolution. If you have good lighting, this will not be as noticeable.

I leveraged Aperture priority and waited for the sun to set.
