Excellent video. I paid to have mine done though I've done alot of work myself. One note for readers, if your rear ABS goes off and no lines are broken, think about wheel bearings. They were breaking down and caused a "dirty sensor" reading on code scanner. Replacing the sensor caused the same reading and it took a while for the shop to figure out what was happening.

Guys, I just want to point out an error on my end so please read this before starting this job. One of you guys (Neal Nazinitsky) pointed out that the drum would have been easier to remove if I relieved brake pressure first by opening the bleeder valve - VERY TRUE STATEMENT! I had overlooked that and even though it wasn't a lot of brake pressure, it was still causing the drum to bind a little. That was an oversight from my end when I was doing this job. Thanks Neal! I found the tools to take the bearings off on Amazon 🤗 also it is a return idem so I got it really cheap. Next off to get a shop press. And I’ll still be saving a bunch of money by doing this my self. I have two tacomas so I might as well have the tools.
@daowause
@daowause 2 жыл бұрын
You made no mistake. With your foot off the brake, there is no pressure in the wheel cylinders. Sometimes it may be necessary to back off the self adjuster if the drums have a ridge. Also, a rubber cap over the brake line will save you from cleaning up a mess and possibly having to bleed the master. Otherwise, awesome video!

Hay KFlo. I’m half way through this bearing swap. I had to build a shop press. Because harbor freight didn’t have one anywhere close to me. Although I did have to go get a bigger Jack from them because the one I had wasn’t strong enough to press the axle out. I hope to have this job finished this Saturday morning. Thanks for the detailed video.

My ABS/brake light is on. 12 Tacoma. I have found those speed sensors to be really expensive from 125.00-250.00 $. 😱 I did find them on Amazon for about 20.00$ for a pair. But that didn’t fix the problem. There’s no play in the bearing that I can feel. But I’m wondering if the speed ring could be bad ???

Really appreciate your video. Super easy to follow and helpful. I have a question. I just need to replace the drum break backing plate which I damaged. Could I just re-used the axle bearing or removing it from axle will destroy it and need to install a new one? Thank in advance.

If you had opened the bleed valve before trying to remove the drum, and also sprayed a lubricant on the drums before trying to remove the drum, they probably would have come off easily - since you had pressed the brake pedal you needed to release the pressure you created. Cleaning the Drum and other surfaces first before reinstalling would have been a little easier.

There are several rear axle bearing puller tools on the market for 2nd Gen Toyota Tacoma. I went to your Amazon link and did not see the item description specify the axle bearing puller tool you used was for your model, a 2009 TRD 4x4. The other tools posted seemed to be for your vehicle. I have to do the same service on my truck and I have the rear wheel drive 2008 TRD Sport, and I am wondering, what was your thought process upon deciding to use the tool you selected. I am certain my axle DOES have the speed sensor tone ring in the hub assembly. Thanks as I am interested in getting your thoughts. Great and thorough video and insightful.
@KFloTacoma
@KFloTacoma 3 жыл бұрын
The axle bearing puller tool that I have is a universal tool for toyota trucks. I went with this purchase since there is a an amazon free returns policy on this one if it doesn't fit. I would recommend measuring the distances of the 4 bolts on your hub assembly and then purchasing the tool. You can validate that the distances matches the hole in the tool. If it does, then great. If not, then you can return and purchase another. With fitment of the rear bearing itself, you can validate through Moog's website and I did a quick check and it should fit your 2008 TRD sport. here's the information (www.moog-suspension-parts.com/moog-512295). Therefore, you should be able to follow these instructions exactly and use these exact tools and parts to do this job.

Hello - I'm planning to do a similar repair on my '03 Tacoma (base model/ext cab/2.4L motor). Your rear hubs have 6 lug nuts each, mine only has 5. May I ask the year/make/model of your Tacoma? The other thing that surprised me is your driveshafts appear to have 2 wheel bearings each. In all the other videos I've previewed on this subject, I only saw 1 wheel bearing on each side/driveshaft. I need to order parts and I just want to make sure I get it right. Would you know how many wheel bearings my '03 Tacoma has on each side/driveshaft? Thanks!

I have a 2009 Tacoma TRD Sport V6. The wheel bearing comes as an assembly, when you pull the old one out, one of the bearings break off and stays on the shaft

Spin the axle back and forth as you wiggle it back into the axle housing. Remember, the end of the axle has to go into the 3rd member and you have to lift that end slightly to mate into the hole.
