We had a buffing room in the foundry on the USS Fulton (AS-11) that was isolated from the rest of the shop. Who ever made it really saved us a lot of work when it came time to clean up the shop at the end of the work day. Good idea to isolate the grinding area and when that is done you might take advantage of the space and install a buffing wheel. Don't forget the vent and supply motors, you don't have to inhale any of the metal dust you'll be generating.

I worked for Cincinnati Milacron in Fountain Inn SC , They built a new machine tool factory in 1980 , every machine location planed and over the 14 years I worked there I know we moved every machine at least once and several many times .

keith ive seen people hand turn metal like wood and ya can work wood on metal machines . as i see it you have a shop...a really nice one... that you can work in with whatever materials you need to a tool is a tool its only as good as the person using it is smart . that being said i understand the desire to keep sawdust and metal chips separate if only to reduce fire risks among other reasons . thanks for the videos

WOW, almost 3400 square feet of space, I thought I built a huge woodworking shop that has 1200 square feet. But I tell you the machines you have make mine look like hand tools so that much space is needed. Like your shop, mine continually evolves with machinery changes. The only thing that doesn't move is my Delta 10 inch "Great White" table saw. Thank you for the tour.

Two questions: Had you considered some kind of exhaust fan through the wall in the grinding area? and: For storage had you considered getting a used "Sea Can" type shipping container? I know lots of construction folks who use them. A truck brings it in, drops it where you want and instant storage.

@@ypopnun1003 Yep...been trying to explain that to SWMBO. We have an 11 acre plot of land, I'd like to build there. Problems are Well, Septic and propane. Propane is super expensive to be heating with (less than electricity, but still pricey). The real cost is the floor though. Concrete in my area will run me around $14,000 for a 40x60 and easily into $18K~$20K for 80x40. Radiant floor heating costs go up too. The building costs don't scale like that, but the other stuff sure does. LOL

After watching 3 or 4 family members trying to get around in "standard" homes of the 60's, 70's and even the early 2000's? Yea...need to design the home for wheel chairs, walkers, etc. We're already getting our wish list put together for an architect.

@@WreckDiver99,that’ll be the best move you can make, designing a house for older age. Build something you can grow into, wide hallways, open kitchen, one floor design, maybe even having wall plugs mounted a little higher, there’s lots of little things to think about. I built my ranch when I was fifty, I’m pushing seventy now, I heat with propane, but I really insulated the house well. While propane is more than natural gas, it’s cheaper than direct tv which you might have to get if your in a rural area. It’s also cheaper than the three cell phones I’m paying for. Good luck with your choices and the old saying that you can never have to big a shop is really true! Go for the big shop or plan ahead for an addition!

@@Hoaxer51 We've been looking for about 2 years for something that would work. Nothing fits. We have specific wants, and by the time we find a house we could buy and gut, we'd probably spend three times the money. Heck, we've seen homes that are TOTAL gut jobs, holes in walls, broken cabinets, 40 year old appliances, etc. 2000sq.ft. going for $300K and up, and they are GUT JOBS. Can't imagine dropping $300K on a house, only to turn around, gut the entire thing to stud walls, and rebuild it again for another $175K or more. I'm trying to convince my wife to sell our 11 acres, and buy the 3 acres that is literally around the corner from us. We could build everything we want on that, and it's TOTALLY wooded, so we'd have a ton of trees to deal with, but we could keep it wooded where we want. Problem is that 3 Acres is EXPENSIVE being in the city like it is. Still...cheaper than a gut job house, and closer to the "city" than the property (which is a concern of hers...hospitals are 30 minutes away vs. urgent care and an ER that is 15~20 minutes away where we are now).

Before you start on the wood projects, I suggest a few tarps to throw over the BM and planer...wood dust tends to act like a sponge for humid air and will rust up the ways (plus the time to clean it off oiled ways)

Was looking old photo’s of the machine tools used in Steam Shops. The milling machines used to do stuff like stoker engines are monsters. They had cutting tools several feet long in some of the photo’s.

WOW, really nice size shop. Did you design the shop building yourself Keith ?? Have to say you did the building right. The Fay and Scott gap lathe is really a special machine. Shame the company folded as there quality was second to none. Bet the wife gets jealous that you are married to metal. Real nice shop fella for sure.
