If more people explained why a breed may not be suitable, less dogs would be returned so I applaud you for doing this without being too negative. Hopefully discouraging the wrong adopters and encouraging the responsible ones!

My 2 ones never barked unless we started to howl :) for fun. Get along with our cats. The larger one which was mixed with wolfhound to improve muscles (stupid because that slows down any athlet) 😊 was extremely scared if thunder and we had to close the windows on every 4th of July being close to a park where they were blasting fire works. Unfortunately because wile they ran were fed raw neat and surely drugs some die from cancer. But as I kept saying I was never in live with a man as I was with those dogs.❤

Me and my wife adopted an ex-racing greyhound yeas ago and Ruby was a great dog. She got along great with other dogs. We lived on a small farm and Ruby killed several wild rabbits. My wife then got our daughter a pet rabbit and one day we forgot about having the dogs in the house and had the rabbit out in the kitchen and weren't paying attention to it. Next thing we know the rabbit was gone and I started looking for her. when I looked in the living room, Sonny the rabbit was lying up under Ruby the greyhounds chin and both were sound asleep in the floor. After that we would bring our Scottish terrier in the house and put Sonny in the dog lot with Ruby for exercise. Ruby would chase her till Sonny got tired and then Sonny would just sit down and Ruby would lay down and lick her on the head and bark at her wanting her to play some more. Ruby accepted Sonney as a family member and never offered to hurt her, they were best friends.

Lovely hounds and good advice especially researching. On health issues, greyhounds are one large breed that *doesn't* suffer from hip dysplasia! They have always been bread for function over form unlike so many other "pedigree" dogs. Bloat is easily mitigated by not running them within an hour of feeding.

Prey drive is the reason I wouldn't just point blank recommend them to elderly owners. My boy's prey drive was so extreme for the first 12 months I had him, he'd go ballistic on seeing a cat, squirrel or small dog. He'd lunge into the road even when cars were coming, spin, try to escape his harness etc and it was extremely hard to control. 2yrs on with training and a strong bond, he's much more relaxed but will still lunge on occasion. Its so important to be aware of breed characteristics, and a hound's level of drive, before taking them home!

I do find his feet are soft and commonly get cut, also his skin is thin and commonly gets scratches on bush walks

At first she had separation anxiety if we were out for a couple of hours sometimes chewing, not really destroying more nibbling, we had some toilet issues despite the fact she could go all night with no issues, she would waken and start howling and crying around 4:30 to 5:30. Now she can go 4hours and is settled till around 6:45 I usually waken before her. She is the love of my life, at times mad as a box of frogs but I can’t imagine life without my Tipperary girl

I think your girl may be the exception, all of the greyhounds we’ve had over the years have displayed some form of separation anxiety. With one being so extreme that we have had to rehome her as it was borderline cruel to keep her in the environment she was in. As a breed they do tend to have some form of issue with being left alone but obviously not all dogs will display this. Like your girl!

In 1992 I brought my retired racer home for a short period. Then something happened in the first week. My missus went to work and I took the dog out and then gave her breakfast. I then had to go out and it was around 8am. Long story short, during the day I had a heart attack. My missus came to the hospital and by the time she got her mother to go to my home to sort the dog out it was almost midnight. She hadn't even peed on the floor ... the dog, not the mother! Being a bitch, they tend to be able to hold it better ... again, the dog, not the mother ... but even so, 16 hours was a long time. I was impressed ... once more, with the dog, not the mother. 😁

Watched your channel for a long time! Love the videos! We have one greyhound and she has corns on both front paws. We got some shoes from Hunnyboots which is a greyhound shoe store. We put these on her feet so she can comfortably go over rough terrain. We think of it as us putting on shoes, how much better it is than walking with bare feet. One thing I think probably could of been mentioned for a longer period was diet, for example they can't have grains, etc. I think that the title probably would be better as reasons to be considerate while adopting a greyhound, but the title being how it is does hammer a good point. Love the videos, this one was great to watch, and agree fully with every reason made. Keep it up!

Well worth being aware also, that Greyhounds and many other of the sighthound lot, are (or can be) very sensitive to the normal injected anesthetic that many Vets use as a matter of course. Apparently related to the very low fat load on these great runners. Have been through a half dozen Scottish Deerhounds, close to that many Italian Greyhounds (you will never sleep alone again! Or sit on a couch, without a blanket across you and your adoring fan!), and now have my second Whippet. Needless to say, I am pretty much of the 'sighthound' temperament! :) Almost all the Breed Clubs related to the sighthounds, will usually have some links to specialist suppliers that can supply broader collars suitable for the breed that you have. It helps take up some of the impact (on the dog's neck) when they see a squirrel, bird, or truck on the horizon, and lunge after it. Won't help the shoulder of the owner... I have seen very nice Brass tags that are riveted to collars, that are inexpensive and easy to get, that you can fill out the contact info that may get a runaway back, too! Phone number, email address, and a Reward offer, are pretty good to add in the engraving!

I'd add that they aren't great with young toddlers. If a child was crawling all over it, tugging at the ears, pulling the tail, etc. Mine would probably react with a snip. I'm not sure I could break her of this, it's how she reacts when she's being hurt and is also scared. Beyond that, mine fits every typical stereotype of a greyhound except the prey drive. We walk by a squirrel on a walk, and she barely does more than perk her ears. Even if I tried to bait her, nope. She also lives with a cat, who she mostly avoids.

@jshaers96 Жыл бұрын
Greyhounds are a great pet if you're lazy. They only need one short a walk per day (more than about 20 minutes and they're toast) and spend the rest of the day just wanting to hang out and be cuddled. The only drawback can be if they aren't used to smaller dogs, their instinct is to rip them apart, so you need to make sure they are properly socialised.
@TheRealPureBlood11 ай бұрын
Utter nonsense about ripping small dogs apart. I've seen ex-racers curled up in front of the fire with the household cat. The only time they would be aggressive to a small dog is during their racing career. Once finished, they detrain very quickly and get on well with other dogs. I'm not saying it would never happen but, in my experience as an ex trainer, it is wayyyyyyy more the exception than the rule. I personally have never encountered that situation but on many an occasion I have seen them frolicking with smaller dogs. One dog I had was really keen and we used to keep a teddy bear in the cupboard to wind her up with. I only used to have to say "Is Teddy in the cupboard?" and she'd be off her bed with ears pricked. If I took Teddy out she would be straining on the leash. When Teddy was thrown across the grass she would pounce and savage it. When she retired, within one month I could throw Teddy towards her, she would glance at it, and then roll over and ignore it. That's how fast the aggression can disappear.
@jshaers9611 ай бұрын
@@TheRealPureBlood If you had read my comment more carefully, instead of jumping in and attacking me, you would have seen that I said that the problem is with greyhounds that aren't used to smaller dogs. Of course they can get over it, and greyhound shelters are aware of that and do their best to make sure they are socialised properly before they are adopted. Honestly, some people are so eager to be offended about anything!

They are both lovely. All animals have downsides. I had a cat an Abyssinian that have a reputation before being troublesome and was he troublesome., but I loved him to bits. He hardly ever slept unlike greyhounds. He would be awake all night up to no good, crashing about chasing flies or dragging the towels into the kitchen. He would wreck the house trying to catch a fly. One of his favourite things was annoying the dog across the street. There was a dog behind a wall across the street and my cat would go across and jump up on the wall and just sit there washing himself, it would drive this dog nuts. We would always know where he was when heard the dog barking. I would see him sitting on the roof of neighbours houses, I don’t know how he got up there. He was a menace but a joy at the same time. He was knocked down by a car and I cried my eyes out and I am a man.

A very good point. We take ours to the greyhound trust every 8 weeks to have his teeth cleaned which he doesn't mind, they only charge £10, although we always give a bit more. We also give him a raw carrot every evening which helps with teeth cleaning, he'll only eat them if they're firm and fresh!

As another viewer stated. It does depend on the dog. Magnus suffered a lot from separation anxiety at first and would struggle if left on his own, even for a few minutes. Now we can leave him for 3 to 4 hours without any issues.

There's one on the greyhound walks I go on. It barks almost constantly all the way around the walk. My greyhound barks at my galgo when playing. When he wants something the first level is a sort of excited bounce, if that doesn't work then it's a whimper and finally he will bark. My galgo will bark at some dogs, usually german shepherd. But if another greyhound growls or barks at her she will jump out of the way and then bark to give it a telling off.

Both of mine bark, my girl Rosie is really loud and my boy Tyson sounds like a big girls blouse 🤣 they bark out of excitement when we get home after being out. Sometimes they bark when playing. They don't bark constantly like other dogs but they do bark. My parents greys never bark, not one of the many they've had over the years.

Like that you didn't treat this as a joke. There are good reasons to maybe pick another breed. Here is the USA, it is pretty hard to get a greyhound anymore due to the tracks being closed. I've heard that cerrtain cancers are also issues in this breed, but this is hardly ever mentioned. Not sure is this is accurate or not.

Such a great point and don't forget little kids can open doors and gates without any thought behind it, which can allow the dog to escape. Goes for any breed really, but as we're talking about greyhounds and their fast running ability, it's another possible hazard.
