Reasons to fear the new Aleph Marut

With a new sculpt available from June 2022 the Marut might be seen on the tables more often. Here's why you should fear seeing one opposite you if you're playing against Aleph.

Both this video and the previous top 5 TAGs video seemed to dismiss the fact that the Marut's MSV2 not only allows for smoke shenanigans, but also allows it to ignore mimetism -6, which makes it an even better gunfighter than most TAGs. This allows it to keep its FtF rolls at a healthy BS 15 when engaging targets, a BS that compares to most pure 5-man core fireteams. MSV2 also allows the TAG to engage well with the mid-field, due to the amount of skirmishers that use mimetism, and warbands that use smoke grenades, both of which are normally found saturating the mid-field. These units are normally seen as the number one threats to TAGs due to their efficiency. But unlike other TAGs that need to necessarily fear these units due to the threat of being smoked and engaged in CC, or face a compromised FtF roll when mimetism, surprise attack, and range bands are added up, the Marut can carve a swathe through them with its MSV2. This often allows the Marut to open up a safe fire lane to effectively engage your opponents far-side of the table For these reasons I think the Marut should have made it as more than just an honorable mention on your top 5 list, and these are additional reasons to fear it

I felt the countering of mimetism was the most obvious reason why MSV was a good thing so didn’t mention it. But you’re right that is an additional benefit. Another is that the flamethrower enables intuitive attacks, which helps to clear camo markers. The high armour means you don’t have to be as cautious around suspected mines.

In a vacuum you have one only, the Camo-hunting. But Aleph already has a lot of tools to hunt for both camo markers and mimetic targets. Starting with the Deva with Sensor, going forth with Dart, and including the awesome Asura. The Smoke combo is only available in vanilla Aleph, and has the problem against the Mimetism values that it doesn't apply all the time, and it does not add survivability to the TAG like Mimetism does, but increases its deadliness... in a faction with ranged killers like Atalanta, or melee ones like Ajax or Andromeda. I think the Marut covers a position inside a Venn diagram that is, however, already populated by too many other pieces, despite being the only MSV TAG, one of the two with Strategos, and her selection of nanopulser and flamethrower (the Terrain skill I don't count, since most tables around here are not including terrain rules, sadly). Also, the natural enemy for the Avatar is not really the Marut. It's the Naga with monofilament mines... who costs the 30 points that more or less are the difference between an Asura and a Marut

The new sculpt is GORGEOUS !! And if making models out of something other than white metal will save me money, AND still looks good, well sign me up. I remember back in 1999 when "James" Workshop went from metal to plastic, everyone groaned, but now that company is 99% metal free (i.e. polypropylene or polystyrene, or poly-what-not). The point is, their sculpts didn't go down in quality or scale or detail, and for a short, brief moment in time, we actually got descent deals.. for like 7 months.. But, I digress, going to a new material isn't a problem ... As long as the company finds an adhesive that works well chemically with the new model material, then everything should go Disco.😸😸😸

Metal can do extremely detailed sculpts. That's not the issue. The issue is that it is heavier and you can't easily make designs with many thin bits in various directions or crazy unbalanced poses

This must be it. The Marut has a lot of skinnier bits (may have skipped leg day) and the weight of metal may have resulted in a different design.

this one is a good cast.. not perfect but they'll eventually get there with time. Most mold lines are hidden, one is right on the face, not super big but if you are a painter you wanna remove that (siocasts are almost impossible to clean properly but with a brand new sharp knife - maybe hot knife? - u can salvage things). The morat tag is more problematic... right now best siocast is the O2 tag in the tournament box, worst cast Tagrosh in the same box and everything else is somewhere in the middle... I trust CB, they will get better at it with time

I agree about the mould lines - most are very well hidden. I also find them easier to see than flashing on a metal. It’s not until a metal mini is primed that I see extra bits I missed in cleanup.

Just for clarity, the Marut is only AVA2 in OSS which doesn't have any access to smoke.

Is this still the case after the updates? But one Marut and smoke is deadly enough. Would make sense to have an either/or choice. Either 1 with smoke or 2 without.

Dunno, while i admit that the new Marut looks great, it looks just like a Gundam reject, and the old design was not just quite cool, but also very much unique across pretty much all of miniature wargaming, my giant bunnygirl robot gal was completely unique in all of the games i follow. The new design feels like "Generic badass space robot #4927".

I do agree that it looks quite gundam but I really wasn’t a huge fan of the old sculpt. I wonder if this one will have a wider appeal 🤷🏼‍♂️

the new one looks more like a Mantic product than a CB one to me... but I have the old Marut in midnight blue, quite coordinated with my converted Juana (the one from the first Giraldez's book) that looks like Dark Saber from FATE :p (who proxies as a Myrmidon officer often enough)

Played with it last weekend, firefight mission and went pretty good. Despite the damn garudas failing all their AD rolls XD. Anyway, if you take a Marut, bring a Probot with you: fairy dust helps a lot!

Funny, I ran a marut/myrmidion clombo on a medium sized building a few months ago, had Atlanta on the other side of the table in a sniper nest. Really bad game for my opponent

@@the_infinitygamer yes, had a few hackers to move up and push buttons. The cover fire from two separate ends of the board and the way the objectives fit on the terrain made it nigh impossible to get to without having to deal with the marut or Atlanta. But the marut did most of the work, the beginning of turn 2 my opponent had lost %50 of his force, including his tag.

New Marut looks dope, I have to old one, for no reason other than it looked cool, I never planned on starting a ALEPH force. I haven't given up on my JSA, but I did recently but the O-12 Action Pack, just for something new. NFI how I'm going to paint them, or base them yet. I have actually faced a Marut at a small Infinity event a few years ago, probably N3, but it actually stayed as far away from my Domaru as it could. It was deadly afeared of my EM grenades, but also Takeshi's super OP close combat thing. Back then I think he had AP, and EXP close combat weapons, and when he went Berserk, he was up to like CC34.

Waiting for mine to arrive, but I do have the old metal one (beautiful model but a pain to assemble) and have deployed her a few times. She just rocks, an absolute monster against most lists, just beware that HD+ will ruin your day so hunt those down as early in the game as you can as white noise is possibly the Maryt's only real weakspot

Yeah anything that can oblivion or isolate a tag needs to be removed early. Are you planning on running double Maruts?

@@the_infinitygamer I might try it once or twice for fun, but I find it hard to justify otherwise, particularly since my most regular opponents run Nomads and O12, with plenty of great hackers. But facing, say, Ariandna in any flavour that should be a blast (and perhaps a bit too one-sided 😅)

While the Marut is pretty good when it comes to TAGs in general, I personally have only had bad luck with it. From losing it in a single order to a HMG (I had cover too...) To taking a wound from a pistol shot (while I was shooting the guy 4 times with my HMG...) To consistently failing discover roles against camo markers... To it getting hacked in the first order of a game. Guess it's just not meant for me, I'll stick with Achilles :D

A lead base would be a pretty good idea to keep some modes upright. I’m losing metal mini love every time I find a top-heavy sculpt. I’d rather a light plastic model over a metal one that falls over too easily any day.
