If ARO’s are actuslly this easy, is Infinity N4 actually complicated? If N4 isn’t complicated, do we need Code One? 🧐

If N5 uses flowcharts instead of text for each rule, that would push CB towards writing rules that can better be expressed as flowcharts. That would also make internationalisation much easier, as they'd just need different text in each box rather than needing to rewrite entire paragraphs. I can't see any downsides.

I think a lot of games can manage rules visually, but it requires a thorough understanding of the rules, and a bit of creativity. I think the flow chart actually also makes it clear how complex a decision is. I think a potential side effect (I don't know if this is good or bad), is that it may encourage game designers to evaluate their games in terms of how short they can make these flow charts.

@@CornerCase exactly. If a rule is too complicated to visualize, then it's possibly too complex for a new player to learn.

A good way to help someone in N4 (Infinity in general) in the demo game make a scattered list. IE: don’t make an effective list but one that shows all the things that can happen.

That sounds like a video idea (or maybe cut up into a series). A planned out battle report where all the moves and rolls are planned out like a script to exemplify as many rules and interactions as possible. The lists would be scattered like you said to provide all the opportunities for example situations.

@@CornerCase Story Time: My first game of Infinity almost drove me away from the game. The person running the demo game was something of a power gamer. The individual in question was really only running a demo to destroy the inexperienced. It was this poor intro experience that formed my belief in what I call the Scatter List. Also, don't worry I later found a good local group where they helped me with the learning curve (Note: this was at the tail end of 2nd Ed. Infinity). What is a Scatter List? A list that is purposely less optimized but still provides examples of the Infinity's rule set. I will always include two infiltrators and an airborne deployment trooper in the list to show off different deployment options. I also always attempt an infiltrate roll on one of the infiltrators because it shows how some skills are optional, also to demonstrate how some skills can fail. I also include a hacker because hacking is something every faction (minus Ariandna) has to contend with. I will include these expensive specialist models but no "cheerleader units" in this list to demonstrate how important the order pool is in the game. Also, I show the other player both my courtesy list and my proper list primarily because this concept is sometimes alien to players coming from other game systems. This type of list is the sampler box to whole of the Infinity game system.

I make it Even easier than that, identical lists,6 line troops with combi rifles all the same stats, plus 1 heavy infantry with an HMS with all the same stats. This way I have everything memorized And never have to look anything up during the game, so I can focus on explaining the game And hopefully having fun. It's also Less overhead for the new player, obviously.

It's a mith that people are visual, listener, etc. People respond to information that is given logically, progressively and simply. Then they need different perspectives to graps the whole concept.

Definitely agree to the scaffolding of rules problem/lack of clarity. In codeone, you place mines using the drop deployable skill, but that's the only deployable I know of it codeone. Then, if you think somebody passed within range of your mine you check the template and don't reveal or detonate if you were wrong. I get that this means the mine is still camouflaged with a mimetism of -3, which is cool, but at what point was your opponent confused about whether it was a mine or not? Maybe this builds good habits for n4, but this seems really cluttered and cloak+dagger for no reason. I placed a mine, you know I placed a mine, but you can't shoot it until you discover it. The number of "help me understand this rule" posts on the subreddit outline how much of a problem the game has with clarity.

I'm super new to infinity code one (mostly because I don't have many friends to play with). So I'm more of a lore fan BUT I've also thought of that. And tho I've never used a mine I think it's mostly an area control think. As you say it probably makes more sense in N4 but I can imagine for example needing to redirect forces from a side of the table to the other but dropping a mine to secure a passage for example. It won't stop my enemy but he might spend an extra action getting around or he might get injured. Again, I've never actually done it but I've thought of it in plays. Buuut yeah don't take my word.

I am not very much into those kind of charts during games (beacuse amount of stuff you have to bring to inf is already massive) BUT i think it might be super useful during reading rules, just to put it in order in your head. definetly will give it a try. also, love your micrphone holder

I have played SO many wargames and skirmish games. It IS a complicated. BUT: it is logical, it makes sense and it is SO friggin cool. If it's your first one, all the others will be easy by comparison. If not, it's a great way to step up your game. Either way, it's worth playing. So figgin cool.

You can't cram 10lbs of ... stuff... into a 2lbs bag. The reason why Infinity is complicated is how the rules for each model interact with one another and the opponent's. This is from an Infinity player since N3 ,😄
