Once again, Reate impresses. Fine detail work, superb fit & finish, and an action you typically only expect from a custom flipper. M390 steel is another plus. Check them out at: @reateknives on Instagram and you can buy them at:

When Jim Skelton says, unbelievable quality, he is not just saying that. This Reate exceeded my expectations and I was expecting a lot. Very impressed. This knife is the reason why I'm not making my own knives right now. Reate is that good.

I have never been picky about a knife's country of origin. Materials, design, cool details, and whether i think the price fits with those first three, yes, but creativity and craftsmanship can be found all over the world, and if i insisted on US only I would have missed out on some nice things from Custom Knife Factory, Andre De Villiers, and Reate.

In the $400 range these look just as good as any others. To much emphasis is made on where the knife is produced. Let the materials and the craftsmanship speak for themselves. Great video Jim.

@jimskelton. Great video Jim. Thanks for helping me spend my money. I was tempted to get the C, but after watching this Sunday night. I ordered the D ti from blade hq, I got it today and love it. And I would have to agree, anything else in that price range is very plain not dressed up at all just slabs and a blade and definetly not the m390. This knife is high quality and gorgeous. And you even get a bunch of spare hardware. Thanks again Jim. What a great buy.

Jim Skelton I don't know if they started out not doing this, but my Horizon B has ceramic multi row bearings. I just got mine at Blade this past weekend and that's what they told me. I took it apart not too long ago to lube it up and sure enough, ceramic multi row bearings were staring me in the face. Still not nearly as smooth as the Horizon D I handled at Blade, so maybe it's something else.

The tests online zt fails over and over . Your spot on great video way to have the balls to say it. Quick question where do I buy REATE KNIVES HORIZON-D-CF, 3.75 IN. Many chinese factories have ability to make good knives They have great handcraft skill that you can see many electronic part made in chinese also many smartphone or ipad that you use to watch this video However many of products come with a low quality material And from country of origin it better to go for a higher profit with poor quality knives But with good quality material cheaper labour cost the result of those knives satisfy me and may be others I think this knive would be better than CR or brous or some of custom american made knife in the same price

I have come to believe that the Reate quality is superb. I do not know anything about their warranty, but I feel confident that David will help me out if I have problems. I have dealt with three of the dealers you mentioned and they are great. Having said that, a Hills was $200. Now these are $400. I'm not saying these knives are NOT worth it. But a $400 knife is a special purchase for me. I do not spend $400 just for a quality knife. Part of what I am doing with my money is sending it to someone. Everyone is different, Jim. I respect you a great deal. I adore David Ding. But when I want to spend that kind of money on a special item for myself, like a high quality wallet or a knife, personally I will save up $600 and send my business to David Clark or Tobin Smith or Jason Clark or Eric Kramer. Richard Rogerss or Jesse Jarosz or Elliot Williamson. Will I get a full-on custom from Elliot for even twice the cost of that Reate? Of course not. But I'll buy a Fortis. Will I get a completely custom Jesse Jarosz? No, but I'll buy his midtech when it comes out. Am I buying just the steel type and the flipping action? No. Call me what you want, but I feel like the guys I mentioned are my neighbors. Maybe I will eventually buy a Reate knife. But for now, Reate needs to understand that great quality is only part of the equation at least for me.

Jim Skelton Ok well i dont comment much but was interested in this video enough to.I think Davids great. I talked to him many times about collaborations and new products. This video was great you told it like it was. But when you compare it to a custom witch i a way you did, i don't think about it like that. Those knives are beautiful but after 350 my money is focused on a handmade knife. Cnc lines are not beautiful to me and I believe they can be cool when used correctly (say one or two lines maybe a inlay and fuller) but besides that I have this beautiful knife in front of me that I look at and say not one person had problems or ideas on this one knife. And.... I paid 400 ... Thats not me. Great video. Hopefully we can talk more at blade!

On the 'Made in China' thing, I really don't care. Being a UK boy, I'm always going over seas for designs that appeal to me. The knife visually reminds me of the Brous T4, which I love, but this just has a little more punch :) I can see the Horizon D CF in my collection in the future, but I think I might go direct for something a little different to the rest of the pack :)

Jim, Is there any reason you haven't posted any pics of the Hills or District 9? Are the Horizon models that much better? Reason I ask is because I'm between buying the Hills or spending the extra $75 for the Horizon C. Also, I used to make a big deal about Chinese knives too. You said it well in your last Reate video when you said we ALL have a ton of Chinese made shit in our homes. And a lot of it isn't cheap junk. Hell I'm using my Chinese made iPhone to write this. How come I don't hear an uproar for US made smartphones? Today I'm trying to judge the knife based on design and quality in build and materials. Reate DOES NOT steal other peoples designs and uses quality materials. I try to buy US made products but I will never be exclusive.

I've had the mini horizon for a while now. Beautiful knife with an amazingly smooth action. My only issue with it is that the sharpening choil isn't ground properly. It leaves a nasty smile on the edge. Not a huge deal really but it definitely should not be there for such a pricey and otherwise very well made knife.

They look gorgeous and from every where I read they are great knives with great steel, China has the crappie shit and had the high end stuff people f Confuse that, maybe they slamming this knife know writing from the iPhone made in China.... So is a reputable maker. Just a few questions. Edge retention? HrC hardness? Can it handle rope, cardboard and still shave? Im a experienced sharpener I don't have problem sharpening to hair popping sharp. Im willing to spend up to 500 for a great one, this or there is as better one? If it's a harder steel 60 62 how is chipping if I Chop some rougher stuff? Thanks very much for your video.

I feel like a lot of the people here that are saying "oh man I'd never buy that, it's Chinese: are A) incapable of judging a product by it's quality rather than by it's country of origin, which is just sad and B) the same people that said "I'm never going to buy a Japanese car" - then got burned on a piece of shit A-body or X-Body GM in the 80's, and bought a Camry. Then said "well I'm never buying a Korean car, it's Korean" and then after driving the latest shitty outdated Camry they bought a Kia. But like... 5 years after everyone else already understood that.

I wonder how long haven't they been to China? 10 years? 20 years? or have they even ever been to China? where did they learn about China? newspaper? @Kittennyanya

+Ashton Johnston *i'm not jim, i know this already* Collecting *custom* knives is an investment depending on where you get them. for example jims bodega it sold for what was it an extra $400? on second market? yeah. it's an investment *if you by from the maker directly* otherwise, it all depends on if it feels right. i would not call a benchmade or a zt an investment for resale in the future, they're just tools not so much on the collectible side.

My issue with this knife isn't that its made in China, thats fine if the price is reasonable. The horizon b was a great knife and a good value at around $200 but here your paying twice that and all you get is an upgrade from s35vn to m390? Im sorry but m390 isn't that much more expensive than s35vn, and horizon A had m390 and it was less than $300 so why is this knife $400? Its a great knife, I love the looks and m390 is one of my top 3 favorite steels and if this was $275 for the cf version and $300 for full ti, I'd be all over it. At $400 you can get some very nice mid techs and custom knives that are US made and have a lot of hand finish work by the maker so a factory Chinese made knife doesn't seem like a reasonable price. Look at the new benchmade knife, 761 I think. Its a full ti framelock, bearing pivot, sculpted ti clip, pretty thinly ground m390 blade ran at 60- 62hrc (like it should be, not 59 that reate does) and its a US made knife with benchmades great warranty and its at or below $300. So again I ask, why is this knife $400?

dubsity280 Why do you leap to such wild conclusions?? Why would David pay *himself* pennies? Reate doesn't knock off anyone, so there's another invalid point. All of their designs are original. And you think I'm the "only person pushing this shit" then that shows you are not connected with our community... so stop trying to speak for it. There are a ton of very happy Reate customers, and many of them are vocal about it on social media and forums. Please start basing your commentary on facts instead of conjecture and pure BS

dubsity280 By your logic you shouldn't even be on KZbin (computer)... own a car... any apple product.... half of your clothes...virtually all electronics... should I continue? All made in china and virtually all factories are run in the same manner, so if you're this bent over a knife then why not just trash everything you own in protest to the treatment of Chinese factory workers?
@LibertyNotLicense
@LibertyNotLicense 9 жыл бұрын
Stephen Ledford Recognizing that you were not addressing me, I'll beg your pardon in commenting here on your post. We may not infer "by his logic" that he shouldn't own or use computers/cars/Apple branded products/half his clothes, etc. In the first one can certainly choose not to purchase Chinese manufactured products in nearly each category--as I myself so choose. In the second your own voiced position highlighting the difficulty in continuing to so choose itself advocates for choosing not to purchase Chinese manufactured goods. What can reasonably be inferred from his post is that there is an unfair competitive edge in the American marketplace benefiting the Chinese manufacturers. One need be deaf or living in quite the isolated penthouse not to finally now hear Perot's "Giant Sucking Sound" removing America's manufacturing. The international corporation cares little for your health or for that of your environment, and nothing for the sovereignty of your nation state, my friends. And the votes you cast with your purchases are heard.

yory teperman How about this I'll go buy one and I'll do a full review compare it to some of the knives I have from Jason Brous and if it doesn't float my boat I'll take advantage of BHQ's return policy? Honestly that shouldn't be necessary there are a lot of reliable people out there when it comes to reviewing knives and I've seen people sing the Reate knives praises each time even the people who just bought one off BHQ without talking to the owners of the companies give a country a chance to change their image and they might just surprise you. Does that mean I want to buy one of these knives right now? No I would rather pick up Liong Mah's new production knife or another from Jason, maybe get my hands on a CRK Sebenza (haven't decided large or small yet). I have a lot of other knives on my bucket list and these Reate knives are tempting but they will have to wait their turn.

Zero Tolerance 0562CF. M390, titanium, hidden lockbar insert, carbon fiber, caged bearing pivot, USA made. $220 The only thing that this ZT doesn't have is a titanium clip, but aside from that, they are very similar production knives at a better value.
@overlandedc
@overlandedc 9 жыл бұрын
MrJakedog104 A valid comparison. I'm not sure what ZT Jim was referring to that is $50 less than this knife. $350 just about netted you a 0392 if you where lucky enough. I have a Horizon B and it's an awesome knife for the money. A little anodizing, carbon fiber, and m390 all of the sudden demands another $200 plus dollars? Seems like a stretch to me. I've handled a friends Horizon D CF and I was impressed with the build quality but the value is better with ZT IMO. Doesn't mean I won't own any Reate's, I just think they are overreaching with this and the Warrior One.

I would love to buy more expensive knives.... to bad I am so bad at saving money for both knives and guitars

I would rather buy that knife than any American knife for the same price. The Chinese have a great work ethic but we over look that because of the cheap products that are mass produced.

dubsity280 I take it you are aware right? Anyway America has no work ethic compared to other country in the world yes some Americans do but other than that little percentage not many have great work ethic and I take that you from American so that explains your views of the place. The "fake" timascus is not fake it's a way of anodizing the metal so before you make a utter idiot of yourself, think about what you are going to say. P.S. They actually say that it's not timascus and that it is anodized. Well anyway go look at the European, Russian , Japanese and Chinese work ethic and tell me that the majority of Americans have the same work ethic and the same contribution to the world and it's development.

***** no I'm not European and in fact speaking English has nothing to do with America, probably has to do with the British but let's not get started on that topic. Anything else I have America to thank for.

Jordz Van 6299 The only "work ethic" the chinese have is when it comes to taking other peoples work/designs/innovations and blatantly ripping them off without due compensation or acknowledgement. So people can buy this chinese knive for 400 or a Chris Reeve Sebenza for another 10 bucks more... Thats a easy decision.

***** Reate knives almost always come with a shitload of replacement parts, like extra bearing pivots, lock bar insert, etc. But you probably won't need them. I've yet to see one jacked up from the factory

Hardly anything is truly original. Nearly everything is influenced or inspired by something else. Complete creativity can be rare. Use an Estrella and a Sebenza for example.
