Before this recording was re released by CMT, I would regularly watch the bootlegged version for inspiration. Now this version seems immortalized, free from the threat of copyright claims. For my money, the greatest recording of this song, and the best case this song has ever made for "Greatest Country Song of All Time." Not something Gentry's version could have ever done. Reba catches fire here, digs in her red heels, and sends the whole place to the moon. This is what country music can become when you let the really really good singers just lean into their talent. So many powerful notes. So many careful notes. So many haunting notes. Electric performance.

It was written and 1st performed by Bobbie Gentry in the 60's. And in the rural parts of the deep South after the Civil War it was a common experience in many families. To avoid starvation young daughters were turned out hoping at least 1 family member would survive. It was not seen as much in the Appalachian MNTNs or Ozarks.
