Rebecca Soni (USA) sets a new world record as she wins the gold medal for the women's 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:19.59 at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Japan's Satomi Suzuki won the silver medal with Russia's Iuliia Efimova winning the bronze.
Swimming Women's 200m Breaststroke Final Full Replay from the Aquatics Centre at the London 2012 Olympic Games. -- 2 August 2012
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Hahaha, keep in mind, they are also swimming in 50 meter increments... eliminating a turn on the way down for 50 freestyle. 2 turns eliminated in total in a 100. And in total 4 turns eliminated in a 200. So not only will meters need to be converted to yards, but you need to keep in mind that Olympians are doing less turns because their pool is twice as long.

Breaststroke being my worst stroke of all 4, my coach asked me to watch videos of olympics breastroke so I can look at perfect form and what-not. I'm glad he asked me to do that, coz I'm so fascinated by the raw power the swimmers are able to put onto the water to push themselves forward

I think Breaststroke is one of the hardest ones of all 4.....its not that easy..... It's like balancing their own body weight in the water by holding their breath...... I think Eventhough lifting and pushing their bodies by going with that kind of style is not that easy.....

Women swimmers peak earlier than men. They can win olympic medals at 14,15 and dominate. Most men can't do that and if they do its very rare and they have to be like 17/18. But men can swim competitively till the early 30s and sometimes late 30s. Most female swimmers retire in their late 20s-early 30s.

My style back in the day. I did excel as a youth competitor in the 50m race. Enjoyed the thrill of the last strokes and the taste of victory tremendously. 100m though was a whole different ballgame. Endurance was my nemesis and I'd come 2nd 8 times ou of 10 to the same girl (and childhood friend) I'd beat in the 50m! I'd be upset with myself every single time.

200m breaststroke long course is such a hard race. My legs were like 100x worse than they usually are after a race and I’m pretty good at breaststroke.

I beg to differ. Some swimmers have a huge dependency on turns, because that push off the wall can be very beneficial for some swimmers, especially sprinters. I mean a turn can bring a person in 4th place, to 1st place (depending on the velocity of their turn).
