His Imperial scepter also appears to be someone's thighbone - I feel a "Hans, are we the baddies?" moment is needed. It is also noticeable that the aesthetics of the Imperium of Man appear to not change at all from when the Royal family was alive until after. I got confused, were the Monks there before the assassination?

Snyder-cut Star Wars: Anakin slaughtering the defenseless Separatist leaders is now a cool scene with upbeat music and lots of slow-mo as Nute Gunray's CGI guts splatter on the floor in gruesome detail. Luke gets diddled at Mos Eisley cantina. Obi-Wan watches him get tentacle graped for several minutes, then chops up half the cantina. Moisture farming is now integral to the plot of several episodes and takes up half of the screentime. Jabba gets a 10-minute sex scene with slave Leia. Vader is so psychotic, he kills every imperial officer that even looks at him. After New Hope, he dubs Luke the "Boom-Giver". Yoda now says "fuck" in every sentence. All ships are now powered by a captive space whale that pulls them through space like a horse.

It’s funny how Snyder cultists would throw the “but everyone loved Darth Vader, Cassian Andor or Palpatine!” card at critics when it comes to Kora. Here’s a thing: Star Wars doesn’t glorify them. They acknowledge what they’re doing is bad and we shouldn’t agree with what they’re doing pretty bluntly.
@TheLewisDawg
@TheLewisDawg Ай бұрын
@@fulcrum6760 Yeah. It really is interesting how today's writers try to make their characters more "complex" by blurring the line between good and evil, but they fail miserably and only manage to introduce protagonists that aren't much better than what they oppose. At least here we could say that the Imperium (btw, how Snyder still hasn't been sued by Games Workshop for bastardizing Warhammer 40k I'll never know...) is so cartoonishly over-the-top evil, that anything against them goes. But then there's something like the Acolyte, where any sense of morality goes out of the window. Compared to that, Snyder just seems like he has a grade-schooler's understanding of what is "cool".

To be a farmer in such times is to be a single grain amongst untold billions. It is to live in the slowest and most drawn-out harvest imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of tractors and combines, for so much has been lost in continuity, never to be fixed in the re-edit. Forget the promise of plot and character, for in the grim dark Snyder cut there is only wheat. While funny it also undermines large parts of the good vs evil part of the setting. Now it is clear the evil dudes don't kill on sight, and the good guys actually use terrorism (and are willing to sacrifice intelligent pets (wait, intelligent pets, they keep intelligent beings in cages?), as suicide bombers). The whole Aris plotline has this problem, according to him (in the movie at least, the books make it clear he knows differently) his mom and sisters are alive and held captive, so he now has no reason to rebel, as that would murder his family (This is also the reason why the murder of his mom and sisters makes no sense (granted this isn't the only media which does this, altered carbon has the same problem, but at least there it is the main plot)).

So a thought occurs: If the imperium needs the Kali in order to warp travel, that means they have a fixed limit to how many of them they can make, or at least make and have the ship be warp capable, meaning the destruction off a kali is a severe strategic loss. Of course this may be me giving this more thought then Snyder did.
@MajorSmurf
@MajorSmurf Ай бұрын
Well if you want to delve into deeper into the rabbit hole of hold up how does this work. The kali are shown to be super dimensional beings who can tp on command so... how were they captured in the first place? If the imperium didn't have access to hyperdrive before the Kali, how did they find them? Travelling from one planet to another can months if not years of someone's lifespan. If the imperium did have the tech to capture not one but an entire host of these creatures than their technology is vastly superior than what we see. It would also mean that they have old tech that can perform the same function of space travel without relying on massacring people to feed the engine. That's a very expensive process for fuel. You can't use the 40K excuse of technology is diminishing so god capturing tech no longer exists because we have no evidence of that occurring so they captured these creatures what a few hundred years ago and just decided oh let's put these limited number of super powered beings into ships that can be shot down at any moment and than hope the god-like being on the loose doesn't come after us out for a need of revenge. The set-up also shows that they have to be kept in a sleep like state as they're so powerful and that process involves feeding them lifeforce energy to either convert it or power the hyperdrive which means we can presume that they use the life-force energy naturally anyway. That means the kali aren't nice creatures if they require an entire cities worth of people to use their powers. If there was any world building you can guarantee these "gods" did some messed up shit but that would paint the imperium as possibly doing something good for the universe which would do against the theming of making you feel sad for the trapped space god.

@clarkmichaels822 The main problem with Snyder's use of Christian imagery is that it's pointless in his films. Like, he doesn't use it to parallel something in his movies. And he doesn't use it to make a point as to the nature and themes of either his own stories or the Christian stories. So the only thing you can conclude is that he uses Christian symbols as like a fucking Marvel movie comic book easter egg or something. It's like "omg dude, it's a Jesus reference!!!"

I was noticing here, this film seems to work much more for Aris than Kora. He is a character who, from what we can see, still suffers from his actions (not being able to repair the ship and talking about his past bothers him), he is a character who doesn't have much choice, as he is just a private, a character who has no faith in the warriors, who loses control after almost having another important thing stolen (Sam almost being killed) and who in the end, has to go after the princess of the empire who destroyed everything from him. I don't know, the film I think would be better with him or a character like him as the protagonist

The thing that bugs me is...why does he NEED a super-special melodramatic angsty backstory that gives him a personal reason to hate the Empire? Why can't he just be a regular guy who decided to do the right thing? Sometimes, people fight evil because just they, you know, realise it's evil.

Theory: Belisarius created the cult of the dead king because he wanted to secure legitimicacy and claim he is acting on behalf of the king. It's the best I got.
@ferrishthefish
@ferrishthefish Ай бұрын
This plot point doesn't seem terribly implausible to me. Belisarius is inventing a state religion for a theocracy that is under his control. The more cultish and devoted said religion is, the more easily Belisarius can wield that power. So it makes sense to deify someone that the citizens already liked. It also makes sense to martyr that someone first; makes them easier to deify and also means they can't get funny ideas about opposing Belisarius later on account of being dead. If anything, the problem with this plot point is that Belisarius should have deified the princess over the king.
@petriew2018
@petriew2018 Ай бұрын
@@ferrishthefish there's a bunch of massive world building problems with this, though. On the surface it's plausible, many Roman emperors were deified after death by their successors in just this fashion. But that was only possible because Rome was a polytheistic society with a very loose threshold for what counts as a god. Anyone could worship anything so long as also worshipped the cult of the Emperor. Problem in this context is Zack goes out of his way to drive home how intolerant his Imperium is with the use of gratuitous se*ual violence.... because he's totally an adult, doncha' know... This is a society with a deeply ingrained pre-existing religion already established as extremely intolerant of any other beliefs, so the idea that deifying the dead king would be helpful to the new dictator makes little actual sense, if anything that'd cause nothing but internal strife between the loyalists to the new government and the entrenched theocrats. Unless there's already an Imperial cult, in which case it's of no significance.... So yeah, it's a typical Snyderism : passes the first smell test, but you apply any amount of braincells and you're left wondering how this man has a job....

I think the use of "pagan." here is defensible. Pagan comes from a Latin word that originally meant "rural" in Roman times. When the Empire Christianized, the urban underclass and then urban elites converted first, and the old religions hung on longer in the countryside. This is how "pagan" came to mean "non-Christian." This empire is clearly meant to evoke Rome, with the repentent conqueror-turned-reformer Emperor as a kind of Constantine and the Princess as a sort of Jesus. So for the army to consider the frontier worlds they sack to be "pagan" actually makes good sense on multiple linguistic and historical levels, if you ask me.

Actually, I take that back, the only person who was flat out evil with no redeeming qualities I can think of in Star Wars was Palps. Even Moth Tarkin didn't flee when he thought he might actually be in danger. That sounds eerily similar to what happened with George Lucas and Star Wars. The OT was perfect because he had to listen to other people's suggestions. Then once he got around to making the prequel trilogy, he was able to dictate, err I mean direct, them as he saw was fit. Furthermore, as if that wasn't enough, Lucas then went back and fkd with the OT (adding all the extra cgi aliens, like those stupidass, screaming singers in the cantina as well as having Greedo shoot first). Power is truly as dangerous as it is intoxicating. Isn't it.

They started the movie suggesting Kora was a brainwashed soldier on a redemption arc, which would have been fine if they had stuck to that; then her actions are fine, sort of? I'm mean she's still a merciless killer, just their merciless killer (like the Punisher or John Wick). but then why is she shocked when Kai betrays them and why on earth does she think surrendering to Noble will spare the village or that anyone in the Imperium of Man can be trusted to keep their word given her history? If I was generous, I would say she is a brainwashed soldier on a redemption arc, but she is also really, really stupid (as is the King). To add insult to injury, Titus indicates that he knew all along who she was but thought he would wait to reveal that the Princess is not dead until after the suicide mission, because, you know, there will plenty of time then. Also, how did he know? I thought he'd been at the Colosseum all this time, drinking himself to death?

I swear every time I rewatch your previous RM videos I have new questions and this cut isn't helping. Like with the Kali. If they are what allows FTL travel then does the Imperium have a breeding program for them in order to provide engines for new warships? If not then is there a limited supply of them and if so then how many? If they are limited then in theory you could attrition the Imperium in to defeat though I doubt the likelihood of that. Also, how do the Blood Axes travel via FTL? Do they have a carrier for their smaller ships that has it's own Kali held prisoner? I can come up with ideas but I'm not writing this for them. I'm just not going to think about it any more or my brain might commit frog boy. Great work, looking forward to RoP S2 being a complete SNAFU.

I want to know how they caught them in the first place. The bad guys have the tech to capture a "god" who seemingly can teleport at will but not a planet dedicated to food supplies? Hell kali seem so incredibly inefficient if the food source they feed on is lifeforce or skeletons. We do know that other ships are capable of lightspeed because korra goes on a happy little adventure without a Kali. So why did they even bother with wasting god knows how many resources into tech capable of capturing Kali and than retrofitting a system into your ships to use a limited number of Kali instead. It would be pointless waste of resources if you already have warp drive or does it offer some advantage? Is it instant tp instead of delayed tp, yet as shown the instant tp requires a recharge and refill of skeletons so... not really an advantage. Like yippie come out of warp drive, see an enemy fleet and can't retreat because you need to feed your Kali. Doesn't it also imply that the Kali are the hungry hippos of the soul eating variety who might suck up or massacre entire planet's population before they were captured to keep themselves alive or powered? Wouldn't that mean the Imperium had a reason to hunt them down, making it more grey than keeping them asleep and a prisoner for shits and giggles. Also why would you put something as valuable as a Kali into a ship that can be easily destroyed.

It's a limited use, difficult to acquire, resource intensive, space consuming waste of time because every other ship in the movie can traverse the known universe faster and more efficiently then the dreadnought the world building here is so.....
