CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jim (James Dean) offers to give Judy (Natalie Wood) a ride to school, but she declines and goes with her friends instead.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
As his parents bicker in a police station, teenager Jim Stark, played by James Dean, screws his face into a knot of frustrated rage and screams, "You're tearing me apart!" At that moment, Rebel Without a Cause changed the rules for the portrayal of teenagers on screen; Jim is neither a goofy-but-good-natured Andy Hardy type nor a Bowery Boys-style juvenile delinquent, but something resembling a real adolescent, awkwardly stumbling through young adulthood. We meet him lying in a gutter, drunkenly playing with a toy monkey before he's picked up by the police. We learn that his parents have moved more than once because Jim has gotten into trouble; between his Milquetoast father and bossy, unaffectionate mother, he has no one to turn to at home and no healthy role model. While waiting at the police station, he meets two other kids from the neighborhood: a troubled young man named Plato (Sal Mineo), who shot a litter of puppies in a fit of rage, and a pretty girl named Judy (Natalie Wood), who runs with a rough crowd to get the sense of belonging that she doesn't have at home. The three teenagers become an odd sort of family, until an unpleasant revelation sends Plato on a rampage.

Wow! This doesn't look like a film released in 1955, based on some of the camera shots. It looks like it was made much later, after the 50's. There are films like this. For example, 2001: A Space Odyssey does not look like a film released in the 60's. More like mid-late 70's. I wonder what kind of techniques the filmmakers used to make the film look as if it was ahead of it's time?

She doesn't get enough of the attention for this flick. She's effin excellent in this movie. And she's a teenager playing a teenager. Dean gets all the play but Natalie, in my opinion, steals it. There's ZERO overplaying or emoting with her in this movie. Completely natural performance. I had a huge crush on her when I first viewed this movie (I was 13). Now as an adult I see how great she was.😘

James Dean and Natalie Wood starred in this movie about troubled youth. Both came to a bad end. Dean died in a car wreck in 1955, and Natalie drowned in 1981. Supporting actor Sal Mineo was stabbed to death by a robber. There is something called "The Curse of James Dean's Porsche." Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles is a tourist attraction with a view of the Hollywood Sign. In the movie, juniors and seniors attend a planetarium show. There is a lecture about the constellations.

You really have to suspend disbelief when watching this since he was 24 when this was filmed, and he looks 24. At school, standing next to the actual teenagers, he looks more like a teacher than a student, at least in that suit. In scenes when he's in the red jacket he looks younger.

@moniquethomas3610
@moniquethomas3610 6 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct. "I'm glad they let you out"- sounds like Natalie Wood telling Corey Allen that she is happy he was released from a police holding on account of a "Chickie Run" on a previous night, to which he responds: "No, nobody Chicken", or no one leaped out too late, or was physically hurt escaping his stolen car. "You're lucky he lived"- "Judy" says with legitimate fear about his competitor, to which "Buzz" remarks reassuringly: "They always live!" in order to comfort her. Not true. He dies that very night in yet another match arranged for he and "Jim Stark". Not too many folks hear this conversation. You are an attentive listener!

Natalie Wood, 5' 2" of under, in flat shoes... What height James Dean, with heels? From this scene, he is no more than four inches taller, at most. But how can you judge talent by size.

The Boomers assure us the Fifties were an idyllic time. Many films of the 1950s, including this one, tell us otherwise.
