This is a really solid way to walk through it. I tend to just run basics because i want my lands to come in untapped, but i know thats an issue when i lean towards 3 color decks.

I love Frank Karsten math videos, this was excellent. Usually I just make an even split of all my colors via two-color lands and then split the difference in gameplan/mana symbol ratios in the basic lands, but I'll definitely consider building it this way instead in the future

Thank you for making these videos. Mana bases was always something I kinda just vibed out and built around mana pip ratios, but this vid plus the land count video has really been insightful. Im definitely going to treat my mana base much nicer now. I feel like im able to make an informed decision on what kind of cards i need. Thanks

Awesome video. Now I hate mana rocks/dorks and making a mana base for a deck that does not have green. So I only play abzan temur bant or sultai or 2 color combinations with green and just use 40 lands Dual land and triome and fect lands And use 12 to 15 sorcery ramp Having at least 22 green lands that give green to be able to use the sorcery ramp asap. Is casual commander and green makes it easy.

Using Moxfield has been so so helpful with creating a mana base. I did something similar to this using Moxfield and my most tuned decks have usually the right distribution of colours based on the pips in spells. This has just affirmed my experiences with my mana bases and I’ve definitely increased my land count since the last video. Thank you Rebell!

This was really helpful for making me think more on somethign I'd already noticed. I tend to spread my mana sources a little more evenly than where teh mana goes across the actual cards, because I want to ensure that there's at least some source for each colour available so my plays can be flexible depending on what I need/draw, but I do keep in mind context. Such as often the only fast lands I run are part green because you need green early to land ramp spells, giving the time to then go into your other colours with slow lands and bounce lands and the like.

Fantastic and clear. I'm building a 3c lands deck next that wants to vomit as many lands as possible out, so I will start with this framework and then probably ruin it at the last minute by cramming extra counterspells in because I hate people resolving things

Idk if i was interpreting the Karsten article incorrectly regarding multicolour, but I think the larger land count was referring to "Lands that can produce X, Y, and/or Z Mana" rather than gold lands specifically. Using the Kaalia example 2C Would be 18, CCC would be 36, adding 1 as he prescribes. This would make the recommendation 19 Lands that produce Red, Black, and White Specifically, and 37 Lands that can produce Red and/or Black and/or White rather than 37 rainbow lands (ie colour-producing lands of these three colours). This is to avoid scenarios where you run theoretically 19 gold lands that can tap for all three colors and then think you can get away with running the rest of your lands colorless (although I think the math should still check out in the extreme scenario of say running 19 Gold lands and idk 18 Plains for instance - where the Odds of opening 3 Gold Lands in 10 Cards (Turn 3) is ~30% and odds of opening 2 Gold Lands and 1 Plains are like ~52%)

Interesting concept (and easy to grasp & use aswell) I prefer to use simulations for my Manabase. We built a simulator for casting a commander. It picks out of your mana sources and simulates a success rate out of 100 tries. (For example having 3 lands and ramped with a talisman, commander is 4cmc and needs 3 different colors) Therefore you can check which percentage lets you cast your commander on curve. It's free to use for everyone, message me if you're interested since I can't post links in here

All those videos when I started would have made me such a better player so much faster. I still watch them, because you never know when you will see something new. And also to force me to start playing more lands eventually 😝😝😝 My main ghave deck runs 31 or 32 lands at the moment... I mean it curves out at 5, but it doesn't have fast mana or anything. I am ok with missing landfalls sometimes. I actively made the deck super greedy. I feel that we need to start talking about this concept of when you can intentionally greed and have less lands in your deck and why.

Ah yes, building for the plan!… Plant-… Plan. Though there is enough rainbow lands in the game for a rough mana base with a few extras if you don’t mind them being tapped.

@ I checked and there’s only about 20 not including the 2 basic fetchers, the 3 based on creature types, the handful of filter lands, and also not including Vesuva or Vesuva two cave-bound boogaloo. Most of them don’t crack over a dollar and the ones that do are like Tarnished Citadel (which MB2 did dumpster), but that’s also cause a lot of them are pretty jank or severely underrated gems.

One thing I started to do more often in Commander, is to "break cycles". Lets face it, there are a LOT of good lands in mtg - even in the appropriate 42 lands, you want to run so many cool utility lands that including every good cycle isn't always an option. So instead of in a 3-color deck doing the following: All 3 Shocks, All 3 Temples, All 3 Checklands, etc... I have started to cut cards out of my cycle. Example: In my Oloro deck, I noticed that my deck was basically a W/B deck (2/3 being white) with a blue splash in it - my only blue cards are 1-mana counterspells, propaganda and some incidental stuff like Voidrend or Supreme Verdict. I ended up cutting a lot of the U/B dual lands from the deck (like Morphic Pool or Underground River), while making sure to keep everything with the Plains type for my White ramp creatures. My mana was already "perfect" with 5 fetchlands, 3 Shocks, 3 Surveils and my Triome, so I decided to bring a desert-utility package to ramp off of Sand Scout and a bunch of bounce-lands - bouncelands are amazing, because they guarantee two lands drops in addition to being useful for re-playing the mdfcs you deployed as lands earlier. I also kept Caves of Koilos and Adarkar wastes in addition to the "ping deserts" to trigger lifeloss off of Lunar Convocation, to make a free bat token every turn. My deck has been running smooth ever since I gave up on trying to cram the full cycle of everything into my deck.

This and the EDH land count video are great; thanks for putting them out there! Funny thing with my Kess Control list is that I've upped the land count to 40 now, but because it's my essentially budgetless deck, I've managed to cram almost every good dual land cycle into the deck anyways. That means out of 40 lands, I only run 9 basics, and it's never given me issues aside from getting mana screwed occasionally (which was a result of running 35 lands for a long time)

Another way to do it, in my opinion, is by evolution -- I play test the deck and following where my "I wish I had a [whatever colored] land right now" instinct goes. Playtest the deck over and over until the 'nagging feeling' for each color feels like it happens equally for each color, and also minimize the times it happens with dual lands until comfortable. Swap one land at a time on the march to that local optimum.

So I'm having a problem with this adjustment. I made alterations based on the percentages, but once I added fetchlands, My overall percentages dropped. How does one use that to calculate, or is this argument against fetch lands
