Mexico, or rather Latin America, had its own Milkchan around the same time. What I mean by that is that they also got an untranslatable Japanese comedy anime and turned into an improvisational shitshow many remember fondly to this day. There’s an anime called Dotto Koni-Chan which had so many Japanese cultural references that they had to make sense with Mexican cultural references. There are some instances, though, in which they completely forgot to improvise and followed the direct translation making absolutely no sense at all unless you understand some Japanese. For an instance, there was a character that had a curse similar to a werewolf; in Japanese, the joke was that his name was Oookami, misspelling of the Japanese word for wolf, Ookami. When the character is introduced, they showed the name written in Katakana, to which another character responded, “your name is misspelled, did you know that? They kept that in the Mexican dub.

Another show that was cancelled midway through the first (and only) episode that Pan covered in 2015 was “Australia’s Naughtiest Home Videos.” A raunchy one off spinoff of Australia’s Funniest Home Videos but with risqué content. Would you believe that the straight dub, full of japense pop culture references actually got translated in Spanish with all the pop culture shit UNLOCALIZED!? Enter Animax in the mid to late 2000s, when this show premiered there. It was INCOMPREHENSIBLE since characters talked about japanese people or commercials, shows, music videos but watching it dubbed in spanish was such a surreal feel. There are episodes of the spanish dub uploaded here on YT, it's a trip.

@@angelinacamacho8575 I'd say that it was because most of the anime shown in Animax was dubbed in Venezuela, and while that country had been in the dubbing industry for many year, they were mostly relegated to cartoons and some live-action shows, there were and still are plenty of talented voice actors in Venezuela, but they had very little experience without anime, aside from shows like The Slayers and Shurato. That's why some of their dubs made for Animax for shows such as Galaxy Angel, Di Gi Charat Nyo, Burst Angel, Speed Grapher, Excel Saga and some others sounded kind of weird. Mexico, on the other hand, took a show called Dotoki Koni-chan, a show that already has tons of weird Japanese humor, and completely rewrote the script and added a lot of Mexican and Latin American references and lots of ad-libs by the VAs and it became a cult hit among Latin American anime fans that grew up in the early 2000s Animax did dub some shows to Mexico, like BLOOD+ and Renewal of Evangelion at least, but the majority was dubbed in Venezuela

It was the vibe I was getting when I started off with the direct translation dub but it fell flat on the references.. the Western Dub was SO much better. It's a comfortable show to watch & the humor hits hard, although many people now would find a lot of it's dialog highly offensive.. it overall does a great job balancing the mundane and raunchy in a deconstructed serialized format. I'll also note your mention of y2k in the end is a very good observation- this shows style is very charming. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

You should try reviewing Crayons Shin-Chan, it's a weird anime that's massive everywhere but America. It's got everything, mysteries death, inappropriate nudity (not what you think, mostly Japanese weird humor), a switch game, 32 seasons 26 movies & multiple dubs one being another fail attempt of a Ghost Stories like translation, attempting to turn an odd kids show into anime south park. If nothing else people will finally get that Rayman reference from Laserhawk. It's just one of this shows that any animation fan should know about, yet most westerns are in the dark about it.

HOLY MARY MOTHER OF GOD XD(iykyk) to see my comment front and center in the middle of the screen really surprised and excited me! I am glad you covered this show, its been a favorite of mine for a while, i have heavy nostalgia surrounding the Americanized adv dub and to see my comment there in this video made my day lol

Honestly really happy you reviewed this show and did an overview about hideyuki Tanaka as someone who is a big fan of his work + as a big bust a groove fan (and also freaking out about finding out he did music videos for denki groove cuz i love their stuff too xD) hopefully this brings the show more attention cuz while it is slow, it is pretty funny and id say worth it! And hell maybe it'll give an excuse for more people to check out more of tanaka's stuff (hoping for more fansubs for his other show as i really want to watch that one too hehe)

Damn, all that time in Chicago has turned Pan-Pizza into a Deep Disher. Amazing research and digging as always. Also, you hit the nail on the head with this. While I'm a fan of both versions (I'm a voice actor nerd, so the literal translation is great if you're a fan of Monica Rial's voice), both my attempts to watch this series in full have never been completed.

Fuggin FINALLY i been waiting years for u to review this show, Pan. I consider it an anime version of ATHF (3 "heroes" living daily life and sucking at their job), i love both the tame and raunchy English dubs, different flavors for different moods

i forgot all about super milk chan. i think i speak for many when i say i was indirectly inspired by this art style, mostly through other's work that was inspired by it. it's got the vibrancy of old 60s/70s hannah barbera cartoons with the bold linework and crisp vectors of the then modern flash age, resulting in complete and utter eye candy.

I honestly tried the joke dub and it just wasn't for me. At times, it felt like they were trying too hard especially with the unfunny live action skits. At least stoner humor was untouched territory for me but rewatching the original JPN audio and straightforward ENG dub after learning more about Japanese pop culture in the mid 10s actually fascinated me. I guess it's an "acquired" taste thing.

I think the funniest part about KZbin is the timeline shows a bunch of people clicked on the ad because Taxi said "After these messages" and they just assumed it was a few seconds after, like I also skip the ads, but that implies people are so quick to try to skip that shit in such a dramatic way like okay i get it but calm down

11:42 Denki Groove mentioned! Tanaka also designed a few of their album covers + made a ton of promo art. They’ve been frequent collaborators with Tomoe Shinohara and DJ Tasaka, who’s behind the Disco Milk (We Love Music) theme on the show. Their album VOXXX is pretty adjacent to Super Milk Chan in terms of general wackiness

Man oh man, at first I thought that Shin Chan and Super Milk Chan were from the same universe but nope, they are different despite both of them having a gag dub while airing on Adult Swim back then. Milk-Chan really is like Doogal but done right for Americanization. And Pop Team Epic is like a modern take of it save for keeping it's Japanese culture in the English Dub. And It is impressive that the creator later on did stuff from Harajuku including songs from KYARY PAMYU PAMYU! Now that is impressive.

Your analysis of the original is exactly what I thought when I first screened it. And I know the live action isn't for everybody, but my thinking at the time was, no matter how much i "fosterized" it, it was still a low action show and I wanted to give people a reason to keep watching it. Anime fans love their VOAs, so... And your call to clip this on KZbin is very sweet. And as you can see by the comments, yours and my positions on it are somewhat controversial. It's nice to have someone see the flaws that I originally thought the show was full of. One more thing: that line about watching it when you think time is moving to fast is one of the funniest fuckin' lines I've heard in a looooong time. Keep up the good work, man. Thank you for giving that little freak and her show some attention. (Oh, great research btw. You're a badass)
