Thanks for the kind words. Nice bike for a build, a K11! I would recommend you given that the engine has been standing still for a long time to replace all rubbers and gaskets. Chances are very real that they have dried out and or will crack if they will not be replaced

Unique video. Great craftmanship. Thanks for sharing. Difficult choice. I own both engines on K1100LT ‘96 and R1200GS LC ‘19. I’d like the Boxer engine a tiny bit more because of it’s uniqueness and character especially at low revs.

Absolutely LOVE the rebuild you did on both of these motors, and I love both of them. BUT, if I had to choose I would go with the R100 because I just love the boxer motors. Also, I ride a 2013 Moto Guzzi v7 Racer so I just love those cylinder heads that stick out and say HI!

I fell in love with the R engine, especially when the bike lost a significant amount of weight with stripping down the fairing etc. The airheads are getting pretty hard to come by these days, especially for a decent price.

I could not afford the Older style air cooled in condition I wanted , so the K100 was all I could afford. I was very happy to find a excellent example of a 1985 K100 RT for $2000. It looks more modern, sporty, powerful and affordable. My heart is the old school air cooled motor , but 1985 is old school by todays standard. If I could afford both that's what I would do, but money and garage space only allows one. The K100 was more practical for me. BMW's are such a great value bike for the money it's truly hard to go wrong. It' s kind of like the model T vs a 1968 Mustang . I can tell you as people age the marks change. K bikes are becoming the modern classic bikes. Once it was the model T now it's the 68 Mustang and even those folks are passing on and a new classic will arise. The K bikes will have there day and it coming soon.

I am reminded of the answer to the question "What is the best bourbon?" The best one is the one you have in your hand! Get at least one of each! I am currently touring with the 100's little brother, the R80RT. However, I did the IBA 50CC on a K100. Jacksonville Beach to Ensenada in 40 hours and picked up the Bun Burner Gold (1500+ in less than 24) along the way. The K's are as smooth as a sewing machine! I am actually searching for a K75 and an airhead GS at the present time.

Couldn't have said it better. Both really have their own carastitics and have totally different way of riding. But TBH I prefer the torque and lighter overall weight of an R, makes the ride a lot more fun. Good luck on the hunt for good candidates!

Utterly lovely finish, how about a view of the finished bikes? I'm still keen on R series bikes, but the brick is more modern & has great longivity with more modern suspension & electrics. It's a very tough decision. I did try a modern R1150R at one time, a really lovely engine & gearbox that handled nicely for me. Decades ago I nearly bought an R80RT. I'm really a Boxer engine guy.

Wow, what parts did you all replace for the k100? I see all bearings but has to be replaced if you rebuild the engine? I have on too and am looking at rebuilding it but I don’t know exactly what needs to be replaced, do you maybe have a list?
@corner.custom
@corner.custom 2 жыл бұрын
I've replaced almost everything. The engine had not yet run a lot of km, but wants to prepare the engine for the coming years. When you do take everything apart, it is a small effort to tackle everything right away. There is a chance that if you leave something untouched, it will leak or tear later on. Then you have even more work to do than tackle it right at the beginning

Question; As you had the bike on a lift, was there any particular reason you didn't use it to not have to squat? It's not a criticism, I'm just wondering what the reason was.
@corner.custom
@corner.custom Жыл бұрын
Because I was building two engines at the same time I didn't had enough space to lay out all the engine parts and keep them separated from the R/K. At that time I also didn't had a bike which needed to be on the lift so I used it as a second working bench

Is the paint blocking an efficient cooling of the engine ?
@corner.custom
@corner.custom 26 күн бұрын
Don't you worry about that. The K100 gets all the cooling that it needs via the radiator and fan and for the R100, there's only Cerakote on the heads and cilinders, so no paint/issues right there.

104 not 205.. BMW needed to develop a clean-burning four-cylinder engine quickly. While a flat-four engine would have been suited to their boxer tradition and experience, it would also give the appearance that they were copying Honda's GL1000 Gold Wing.[6] In 1977, Josef Fritzenwenger presented a prototype using a PSA-Renault X-Type engine from a Peugeot 104.[7] The engine, which was installed in the 104 at a 72° angle, was laid flat in the frame with the crankshaft on the right, running parallel to the centre line of the frame.[5] This layout, for which BMW submitted a patent application, was well suited to BMW's traditional shaft drive, needing only one 90° bevel drive to transmit power to the rear wheel. Using shaft drive with the near-vertical transverse engine WIKIPEDIA BMW K100
