With that last ipod, the FireWire cable uses a much higher voltage than the usb cable, which can sometimes be what the hard drive needs to run effectively (they can run on 3v-30v if I remember correctly), and it delivers slightly more power (somewhere around.4 watts I think), so if the hard drive needs that extra kick to run, it might be the case that usb just isn’t powerful enough/high enough voltage to charge and power it, I also have an ipod docking system that’s has been able to deliver power on the same level as FireWire, so this seems in line with what you’re experiencing
@silasweaver8268
@silasweaver8268 4 жыл бұрын
And for the deeper scratches on the screens, I would recommend sandpaper and wd40, starting at 1000 grit and going up, then brasso, the brasso alone is too fine to remove the deeper scratches

Just use a multimeter to measure the USB VBUS voltage. After that check for broken caps or resistors in the Power management area. In the 5/5.5 gen the Philips PCF50607 is used for power management. It has an I2C bus and a 10bit ADC. But the LTC4066 LDO and USB Power Management/Lipo charger could also be a potential candidate. We can rule out the TEA1211HN Buck Converter because the iPod still works.

iPod Classic (4th or 5th gen and later) is not that easy to open with especially when I watched the Geek Detour video even with iSesamo blades & the fact that Hugh Jeffreys opened those faster than him is just impressive. I have two of these both hard drives acting funny. I would love to do this but have always been afraid of breaking them!

I can't still believe that once the battery was the smallest component in the ipod.

Great videos. I've got a 30gig 5th gen that has the same issue, no data/sync over USB. Tested the data pins from USB cable to the motherboard and they are fine. Did you get any more insight into what the board issue could be that's preventing data/sync over USB? I'd love to restore this iPod that completely works otherwise.

Well done on the rescue work , for me I like to listen to my 5th gen iPod video for its superior sound , I would rather listen to this in bed then risk my iPhone dropping on the floor and smashing as these iPods seem tougher

That's the amateur way to open an iPod. Put the pick in and make sure it's pointing down, then push in. this should release the clip, and then slide down. Then it just folds open like a book! Or just use the Pro Strat, your choice. BTW, love your content!

Damn those hard drives are huge! Imagine how much larger and slower the new iPhones and iPads would be if they still used those.

You dumbass,hard drives are actually way faster than people think they are and they will always hold data for much longer compared to SSDs
