I'm glad you kept it as a powerful magnificent rocky mountain juniper. The fact this juniper was your first tree to add in your collection the states, it holds a huge sentimental value that not another person can ever have. As for me after my younger brother passed, I've lost just about everything. Thats including my absolute pride and joy that started my bonsai journey in my icon. Slowly picking up the pieces but this hobby of mine won't ever feel or be the same way again.

I'm happy the traditional Japanese and Chinese Bonsai aesthetics exists, but Its been amazing to see American Bonsai develop and find your own style to represent what is arguably the country with the most spectacular ancient trees. Really happy to see you've decided to keep the foliage. Its been a privilege to witness these trees develop over the years. Cant wait to visit someday.

I think it's a gorgeous tree. The OG foliage seems to fit. Itoigawa or some other shimpaku might look great, but something about the loose foliage on this suits the look. If this were in my collection I'd refer to it as Bolt, or The Bolt, considering it looks a little like a lightning bolt. Knowing my wife she'd refer to it as Bolty. Excellent editing in the video as well. Videos like this are so pleasant to watch.

Or you could call it Harry POTter because of it’s bolt shaped

It's been nice witnessing the evolution of this tree over the years. I love the movement and the live vein. The foliage has always seems somewhat sparse to me, and never seems to fill in. I've always hoped you would graft itoigawa to it. It's nice to see you at least tried. Hope it fills out a little bit more in the future. We'll done !

thank you very much for introducing us to this story Björn, I have some horizontalis but continuous with the original foliage, it seems to me that despite having its characteristics, expressing its natural shape is quite difficult in foliage that has a propensity to stretch.

I completely agree with this. I love the current shape contrasting the deadwood. I honestly feel like it’s uniqueness would lend itself well to being turned into a silhouette as a potential logo for Eisei-En

Thanks for sharing. Very impressive tree with lots of deadwood. To me it need much more green in order to balance with the deadwood. It is even more impressive to see an old tree still very vital. I liked more the proportion of green and deadwood bevor rebild/ wirering. Maybe this is the confusing point make some people hatelove it...

In its current state, the deadwood seems to overpower the tree too much. I think once the tree grows some more and fills in so that the foliage can combat the composition of the deadwood, it’ll be a winner!

I once had a rocky mountain juniper that I've tried grafting Itoigawa foliage to. The grafting failed after five separate attempts (including an approach graft). I gave up and sold the tree. I'm wondering if another type of shimpaku would do? I believe I saw a juniper in your BonsaiU videos that you described as a "nursery grown Itoigawa cultivar"? I have that type juniper and have had great results grafting to rmj and san jose root stock. just a thought.. :)
@michelangelobonsai2 жыл бұрын
the vast majority of juniper varieties can be grafted together. It is necessary to be very careful in the execution but above all to understand when is the best time for separation, if it is about grafting by approximation
