I appreciate videos like this immensely. Not likely that it'll get a million views but invaluable for a niche group of people. My 1990 needs this exact treatment almost. Where did you/owner buy the engine? I'm curious about availability and cost.

Nice work! It takes some guts to drill a block. Don't forget to off up that core block- it is probably just fine, even with 300K miles. They are strong blocks. GL with the rest of the work and thanks for sharing.

The factory never used a oil pan gasket. If you use Hondabond HT- you will likely never have a leaking oil pan. The oil pan gaskets will always leak. Glad to see you figured the non interference part.

Great video man. I did a motor swap on my 93 a few years ago. I got the block from engine world for 500 bucks. Short block with super low miles. Swapped all my stuff over in about a weekend or so. Just had to wait for some odds and ends coolant parts like the housing and hoses.

That's the blessing about the 12valve 6g72s....they are non interference motors. I am curious, where did your friend get the new shortblock? I MAY need one for the Gen 1 we saved.

The old style crank bolts tend to break. Any of them will back out if they're not torqued correctly, but that's not why they're onto a third iteration. In my 95, years ago, mine broke off flush with the crankshaft snout and it was NOT fun to fix.

What kind of engine stand is that? How much does that engine weigh? I was guessing maybe 300-400 lbs? I am about to pull a 1990 Montero engine and I am looking at engine stands. Seems like the 3/8 ton (750 lbs) would work fine right?

Hi from South Africa I've got a Gen 3 Pajero v6 3.5 GDI. Where did the exhaust manifold crack. Just interested as I'm getting fumes into interior. Carnt find hear any leak. Thanks

They crack in a few different spots, usually you can’t see them until you remove the dust shield

SOHC is a non-interference engine. Most likely you will find no valve collision damage. The bolt may have been over torqued. The whole engine is severely neglected.

Hey! wanted to know your thoughts on the Montero sport version. Looking to by a XLS 97' and im wondering about it compared to the Gen 2 montero
@montanamontero Жыл бұрын
I don’t know much about them actually. The one I had was a 2000, and i liked it all the way up until it blew up on me haha

What's it cost to rebuilt one? I have a 1990 w/ a blown head gasket and was thinking of just rebuilding the whole motor... 192k on it. Thoughts?

What did you do? I have a 1999 with a blown head gasket also. 254K on it!

Those bolts like to break - I’m only a couple of minutes in, but if this is really a gen 1 montero engine, it’s non-interference so shouldn’t be any bent valves or damage on the cylinder tops
@montanamontero Жыл бұрын
Yep I figured that out in the end

Those 3.0L umin the first gen Montero are non interference! Valves and piston should be alright!

Cant beleive they didnt make provisions for the dip stick hole to begin with on a brand new rebuild motor block? Another thing i cant beleive your putting those old nasty grimmy parts back on a fully rebuilts motor without cleaning and painting them 1st? it will still look like a 300k motor when finished

You didn't clean shit. You just bolted on the gunky parts on a nice new engine.
