Rebuilding a Repeat Pattern from the Pattern Fill on an Artboard in Illustrator

When making patterns in Adobe Illustrator, we have to work around the limitations of Pattern Editing Mode: brushes and Freeform Gradients get expanded, transparency can cause lines between the tiles, and performance slows down the more complex your art is (to name a few). In this video, I show you how to take a pattern fill you created in Pattern Mode, and rebuild it on the artboard, so your art remains totally editable and line-free!

How Laura, thank you for an awesome tutorial. Is it ok to save for web for Spoonflower since it is going to print? Will it affect the quality?

Yes, it is! It's what I use - as long as you export an image that's large enough in pixel dimensions for the final print. I multiply the tile size by the resolution to get the pixel dimensions. So for Spoonflower, if you need your tile to be 10" square, and Spoonflower resolution is 150 ppi, the dimensions of that tile in pixels are 1500 square. Anything smaller than that may not have enough pixels for the clearest reproduction.
