06 factory intake is pretty damn well designed from factory. It doesn’t get much better. Nissan really did a great job with the design and under the hood, you’ll see a rubber seal that does not let air leak into the engine compartment. The air has nowhere to go but that small intake hole near the driver side headlight. Factory air box fits right in and all you need is a quality filter.

The stock intake setup takes cold air from in front of the radiator. This is better then any aftermarket unit that has the filter behind the radiator. The idea is to get the coldest air you can into the throttle body and to reduce any restrictions between the filter and the throttle body. . Now, they do make better tubes then the OEM one. I have never witnessed an actual dyno test which showed any appreciable gain in HP from these after market intakes. If there were any gains it was all at the very top end of the RPM band the engine was designed to operate at. I have seen units like on his Z, which had the filter behind the radiator that actually caused the car to loose hp when dyno tested and when the engine was fully warmed up.

i owned a modded 03 350z for many years, best intake mod was the Factory 06 Air-Box conversion with K&N drop in air-filter, along with an Aluminum Z-tube, wrapped the tube in Gold reflective tape. Adding the Plenum spacer to the above, was able to push 278hp at the wheels via ECU tuning. I would have liked to coat the 06 Airbox with heat reflective material and have it tested further...
@KoreRacing6 жыл бұрын
I use Mishimoto’s full intake kit and have had zero complaints. Excellent quality and it’s Dyno tested for results. If not theirs I would run the K&N system.
@ShiftTechPerformance6 жыл бұрын
like many are suggesting, the factory style intake system works pretty well. The biggest performance gains that can be made in regards to the intake system are with the intake manifold and/or throttle body. Simply adding a plenum spacer will add tons of power. The rev-up lower plenum is designed with short runners that cater to high rpm power, but it kills the low/mid range torque. For the same reason you skipped out on the headers, I'd suggest replacing your lower plenum with a Shift Tech Performance Lower (shameless plug) at the very least, or pick up the set and add a plenum spacer. You will legitimately pick up more WHP with this mod than all other bolt-on mods combined. Plus, it alleviates the oxygen starvation from the front two cylinders, which causes lean conditions with other bolt-on parts. It will also allows for better, more consistent tuning results. You can expect anywhere from 15-35whp realistically, not to mention the difference in throttle response is night and day.

Ditch the K&N entirely and use stock "paper" filter in stock airbox. But hey in this case it is a drift car so longevity does not matter. The oil based air filters are terrible at filtering and poison the MAF sensor.
@speedobsession_6 жыл бұрын
@@TheSergeiFranco that's weird, Never had any issues in the two years my K&N filter has been installed.
@TheSergeiFranco6 жыл бұрын
@Speed Obsession, I had been running drop in K&N filter and found that after a few years there was a noticeable build up of fine dust in intake. If filter is over oiled (really easy to do) it will also coat the intake with oil (albeit you have to really over oil it). The MAF sensor is very sensitive to both dust and oil. The K&N says otherwise (of course they do). Even disregarding claims of filtering efficiency or oil contamination, the nature of the oiled filters is that their filtering capacity is smaller then the good "paper" filter. I put quotes around paper because technically they are not paper but synthetic fibre (at least Denso ones are). I would never put K&N or similar filter in my WRX STI, as the factory airbox and filter is not the bottle neck. Provided it only makes 200kW at the four wheels. My other project runs a TRD pod filter (similar to K&N), simply because it is not possible to use factory airbox, nor the factory airbox was of good design (being a car made in `80), interestingly enough that also made 200kW at the four wheels, in this case it is a 3SGTE powered vehicle.

If you are getting a tune go for a 3.5" or 4" CAI and route it into the gap behind the left headlight. Some trimming is needed. Otherwise a 3" will work with the stock MAF housing and can still be routed behind the headlight and into the number space in front of the wheel.

That may be false logic, as while the coolant has further to travel, there are fewer passages for it to travel through, so the velocity will be higher - this means the actual 'time' for heat exchange may be the greater, the same, or even less than a 'downflow. On the other hand, with side mounted tanks, they will usually take up less frontal area so increase the cooling matrix area. Regardless, always better to over spec' the cooling as you always reduce airflow through it :-) Oops, bit of a potential mistake with the engine oil cooler - with the lines at the bottom there will be little self bleeding and the cooler may be a lot less effective (unless it has a bleed at the top?) than if the hoses were to the top as there is a high probability of air being trapped in the top. Similarly, the power steering cooler should be in at the bottom and out at the top.
@speedacademy6 жыл бұрын
The coolant velocity is determined by the pump so that's not the way it would work. As for the oil cooler, many OEMs even F1 has mounted coolers upside down. A quick google search will explain that there is zero issue with mounting it that way.
@dancarlos12166 жыл бұрын
The engine oil is ventilated so the air in the system will be forced through the pcv or catch can.
@gordowg1wg1456 жыл бұрын
Volume rather than velocity ;-) The velocity being a function of the flow and CSA it is passing through as the coolant is considered non-compressible - the CSA being the number of tubes times their area and that is why I said "may be the greater, the same, or even less", I don't know their area compared to the OEM. Regardless, definitely an improvement :-) and I like their use of the OEM fan assembly. Re: oil cooler orientation, I may stand to be corrected - this is a direct quote from the MOCAL web site, " Oil coolers may be mounted anyway up and are self bleeding, the resistance to oil flow through the matrix means that tanks will fill up evenly pushing out the air before the oil flows through."; if I ever get round to having a cooler fitted with a bleed, I'll try running it 'upside down' for a while then seeing if there is any trapped air ;-)
